Whatevercenturiesmaypassorthefutureholdinstoreforher,JapancanneverlosethestampofBuddhisminherouterorherspirituallife. The world knows little asyetof the soul ofMahayanaBuddhism, thoughmuch of its outerobservance, andforthisreasonacrucialinjusticehasbeendoneinregardingitmerelyasadegradedformoftheearlierBuddhism arankoff-shootoftheteachingsof the GautamaBuddha, asystemofidolatryandpriestly powerfrom which theausterepurityoftheearlierfaithhaspassedaway.Thetruth is thatBuddhism, likeChristianity, ineverycountrywhere it hassowedits seedandreapeditsharvest, developed alongthe linesindicatedbythe mind of thatpeople.TheBuddhismofJapandiffers from that of Tibetasprofoundlyas theChristianityofAbyssiniafromthat of Scotlandyetbothhaveconservedthe essentialprinciple.Buddhism was not a deadabstraction, but alivingfaith, and it thereforegrewandchangedINTRODUCTION 9with thegrowthof the mind ofman, enlargingitsperceptionof truth. As in the othergreatfaiths, theascent oftheMountof Visionrevealsworldsundreamed andproclaimswhatmayseemto benewtruths, butareonlynewaspectsoftheEternal.JapaneseBuddhists still base theirbeliefontheutterancesoftheBuddhas, buttheyhaveenlargedtheirconceptionof the truths sotaught, andtheyhold that the new flower andfruitspringfromthe roots that wereplantedindimagesbefore the GautamaBuddhataughtinIndia, and have since rushed hundred-armed tothesun. Suchisthereligioushistoryofmankind, andBuddhismobeysitssequence.ThedevelopmentofMahayanaBuddhismfrom theteachingof the Gautama Buddha hasbeen oftencomparedwith that of the ChristianfaithfromtheJewish, but itmaybebettercomparedwiththegrowthofasacerdotalsystemfromthesimplicitiesof theGospelof St. Mark. Thatthedevelopmentshould have been on the samelines in all essential matters ofsymboland(inthe mostimportantrespects)ofdoctrine, modifiedonlybyEastern habits ofthoughtandenvironment, isamiracleofcoincidencewhichcannotbeparalleledhi the world unless it begrantedthat10INTRODUCTIONChristianity filtering alongthegreattraderoutesof anearlier worldjoinedhandswith Buddhisminmanyunsuspectedwaysandplaces.Evidenceisaccumulatingthat this isso, andinameasureatpresentalmost incredible.
