Universities andUniversities o the Arts
Apart rom the classical universities, whichoer a wide variety o disciplines, there area number o specialist universities as wellas a university centre or postgraduate edu-cation.
Austrias six universities o the arts oerprogrammes in music and drama or in thevisual arts and design.
The usual language o instruction is Ger-man, some programmes are oered in Eng-

The total number o students is approxi-mately 286,100 (o whom international stu-dents: 63,550). (uni:data, winter term 2009)
Academic calendar
The academic year in Austria as a rule beginson October 1st and ends on September 30th
o the ollowing year. It consists o:
> winter semester(October 1st to January 30th),
> summer semester(March 1st to September 30th)
and periods during which no lectures areheld (Christmas, semester and summer
breaks). (Exceptions rom this schedule arepossible; please enquire at the educationalinstitution o your choice.)
Structure o study programmes1
In the last ew years the Austrian universitysystem has introduced the European three-tier system o degrees according to the Bo-logna process.
Besides, the old two-tier system still existsin some subjects areas and universities (orexample medicine).

Bachelor and master study
programmes
Most degree programmes are divided into
> bachelor studies, which concludewith the degree o Bachelor.ECTS credits: 180 (in special cases, 240)
> master studies, which require thesuccessul completion o a bachelorstudy programme and conclude withthe academic degree o Master.ECTS credits: at least 120
Doctoral studies (PhD)
Doctoral studies are based on the success-
ul completion o diploma or master degreeprogrammes and are conceived to demon-strate the ability o autonomous research.They conclude with the degree o Doktor/in or PhD. Duration: at least 3 continuousyears without the award o ECTS credits.
Traditional diploma programmes
These programmes conclude with the awardo a diploma: Magistra or Magister in mostdisciplines or Diplomingenieur(in) or engi-neers. Duration: 4 6 years.
Private UniversitiesAustrian private universities oer innova-tive and high quality education and providestudents with personal attention at thehighest academic level. Continuous inter-nal and external evaluation o teaching andresearch as well as active promotion o thearts assure constant university quality de-
velopment.
The Austrian private universities reineexisting and establish new degree pro-grammes based on current and uture edu-cational needs.
Periodic external re-accreditation reviewssupplement internal quality management
and provide graduates with excellent chan-ces or their uture careers.The Conerence o Austrian Private Univer-sities (OePUK) serves as oicial representa-tive or its members both in Austria andabroad.
The curricula o the Austrian private uni-versities as well as the academic degrees
awarded by them dier rom university touniversity.

University Training CoursesUniversity Level Courses
Universittslehrgnge
University training/level courses are urthereducation courses at universities.
There are various levels (undergraduates postgraduates). Very oten they last 2 4 se-mesters. The contents, goals, structure andduration o these courses are determined by
the universities, which are responsible orthe individual curricula and can provide in-ormation about these opportunities. Uponthe completion o postgraduate universitycourses academic titles such as Master oAdvanced Studies (MAS) or Master o Busi-ness Administration (MBA), among others,may be conerred. Universities oApplied Sciences (UAS)
Fachhochschulen (FH)
Universities o Applied Sciences oer their
students proessional-oriented higher edu-cation. This is relected in their curricula,which include mandatory career-orientedpractical training units or job-based intern-ships. The number o students per year andprogramme is limited, and or this reasonmost o the programmes have an entranceprocedure which has to be successully
completed.UAS oer ull-time and part-time study pro-grammes. Part-time programmes are de-signed or working students and take theirspeciic situation into account. For the com-pletion o all UAS programmes a relevantthesis and an examination are required.
The academic degrees awarded are Bachelorand Master. In the technical ields there isMaster o Science or Diplomingenieur(in)(equivalent to a Master o Science) award-ed. Graduates o UAS Masters programmesmay enrol in doctoral programmes at uni-versities. In line with the Bologna ProcessUniversities o Applied Sciences oer Bache-lors and Masters programmes since 2003.

University Collegeso Teacher Education
The Austrian University Colleges o TeacherEducation oer a three-year (six-semester)Bachelor o Education (BEd) degree in com-bination with a teaching qualiication orprimary, secondary or special needs schools.Some o them also oer BEd degrees orpolytechnic schools and or teaching re-ligious education. The University College
o Agriculture and Environment oers aBachelor o Education in combination witha qualiication or teaching in schools o ag-riculture.
Graduates o higher secondary educationare accepted at the University Colleges atergoing through a screening procedure andater successully completing a our-week
inormation period.
The study programme comprises courses ineducational science, subject studies relevantor the respective teaching qualiication andpractical school experience.
There are nine state-run University Collegese.g. in Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salz-
burg, Tyrol, Styria, Vorarlberg, Carinthia andtwo in Vienna and ive private ones main-tained by the dioceses o Graz, Innsbruck,Linz and Vienna and by a oundation inBurgenland.
The University o Applied Sciences is a rela-tively young type o tertiary education com-pared to universities. It is mainly inancedby the Federal Government.
The irst degree programmes were estab-
lished in 1994/95. At present (i. e. inthe 2010/11 academic year) 354 UASdegree programmes in areas such as Busi-ness, Engineering and IT, Social Scien-ces, Law, Media and Design, Health Scien-ces and Cultural Sciences are oeredby 20 institutions (see list on page 108).About 30 degree programmes are oeredentirely in English.
The total number o students is approxi-mately 36,000. 12 % o the students goabroad or a period o study or a proessionalplacement.

Application or Admissionto Study in Austria
You have to send the application and ne-cessary documents to the university, theuniversity o applied sciences (Fachhoch-schule / UAS) or the UAS degree programme(applications submitted to the Austrian re-presentative authorities will be orwarded
to the educational institution applicationsmust arrive at the university on time, pleasebear in mind that orwarding may takesome time; submission o the applicationat the representative authority does not ex-tend the deadlines!). Some universities oera registration o data via Internet andwill then send speciic inormation to you
via e-mail.
Closing dates/ deadlines
> Universities: All documents have to ar-rive at the Austrian university by September1st or the winter semester and February 1stor the summer semester. These deadlines
cannot be extended. Since it takes a whileto process the applications it is advisablethat you submit the application as early aspossible.
For oreigners who have the same status asAustrians1 and or nationals o EU and EEAmember countries as well as or Swiss na-tionals the general application deadlines
o each university (approx. mid/end o Oc-tober or the winter semester and mid/endo March or the summer semester, depend-ing on the individual universities) and anadditional application period (November
1 diplomatic sta; spouses and children o accre-dited oreign correspondents; persons who them-selves or those liable or their support have hadtheir centre o lie in Austria or at least 5 years im-mediately prior to application; certain recipientso grants; holders o school leaving certiicates o

5. For many programmes proo o proi-ciency in German is necessary and
should also be included in the applicationdocuments, i available (e.g. German exami-nation within the school leaving examina-tion, language course diplomas). See Ger-man language courses on page 16.
Foreign documents have to be presentedin the original (and in photocopy) and haveto be legalised4. I documents are drawn up
in languages other than German, legalisedtranslations have to be added, translationsdone abroad also have to be legalised.

In some study programmes, e.g. medicine,dentistry, veterinary medicine, psychology

Entry and Residence Conditions
a) Nationals oEU and EEA member coun-tries as well as Swiss nationalsdo not need
visas or residence permits. When stayingin Austria or longer than 3 months they,however, have to apply or a conirmationo registration (Anmeldebescheinigung atthe immigration oice (Landeshaupmann,Magistrat, Bezirkshauptmannschat) within3 months o entry to Austria.
b) Other oreigners have, i they are stay-ing or longer than 6 months, to apply ora residence permit or study purposes (Au-enthaltsbewilligung Studierende) 5 at theAustrian representative authority beoreentry to Austria ater receipt o the noti-ication o admission. The application willbe sent to Austria and the decision has tobe awaited in ones home country (there-
ore the application should be submittedat least 3 months beore the intended ar-rival in Austria). Exception: Applicants whoare allowed to enter Austria without a visa(inormation about this is available romthe Austrian embassies) may apply or andreceive the residence permit rom the Immi-gration Oice once they are in Austria.
Universities o the arts and UAS degreeprogrammes oten do not require proo othe general or speciic university entrance
qualiication; instead, prospective studentshave to pass an entrance examination orproduce proo o relevant proessionalqualiication. Inormation about the pre-requisites (these dier rom one institutionto the other) is available rom the universi-ties o the arts, the universities o appliedsciences and UAS degree programmes.
I all prerequisites are met, the educationalinstitution will send the notiication o ad-mission or the invitation to sit an entranceexamination to the address speciied bythe applicant. Students may be admitted asdegree programme students or i supple-mentary examinations are required andin the case o university training courses /
university level courses (Universittslehr-gnge) as non-degree programme stu-dents. On arrival in Austria students have toenrol in person with the university or UASdegree programme.

I you have to sit an entrance examinationat an Austrian university o the arts, the pro-cedure or students who may not enter Aus-
tria without a visa will be the ollowing:> 1. On the basis o your applicationthe university will issue a conditionalletter o admission (bedingter Zulassungs-bescheid). Together with the conditionalletter o admission and all other necessarydocuments you have to apply or a resi-dence permit at the competent Austrian
representation authority. Since the pro-cessing o the application has to be awaitedin your home country you should apply atleast three months beore the scheduledentrance examination. Suicient inan-cial means and accommodation have to beshown credibly, e.g. conirmation o alimo-ny payments o parents, preliminary rental
contract, reservation o a room in a studentdormitory.
> 2. In case the Austrian authority ap-proves o your residence permit applicationyou can apply or a visa D to travel to Aus-tria. The visa D will be issued or 4 months.The visa allows you to come to Austria totake part in the entrance exam.
The ollowing documentshave to be submitted:
1. a ully completed and signedapplication orm (available rom therepresentative authority; can also bedownloaded rom the Internet)
2. valid passport (must be valid
or the whole duration o your stayin Austria)3. passport-sized colour photograph
(between 3.5 x 4.5 cm and 4.0 x 5.0 cm)4. birth certicate6

6. health insurance or the periodo entry to beginning o study(see Health insurance or students)
7. notication o admission o theAustrian educational institution
8. proo o sucient nancial meansto cover ones living costs or 12 monthsin advance (or students up to 24 yearso age: 438.17/month;or students over 24 years o age:
793.40/month (these amountscontain the rent or accommodationo up to 253.51 in 2011), e.g.:savings bank book / account in Austria /declaration o guarantee o a personliving in Austria / Travellers Cheques
9. proo o accommodation(rental agreement, accommodation
agreement with a student hall oresidence).The issue o the residence permit issubject to a ee ( 110), additionalees may be applicable.

> 3. I you pass the entrance exam youhave to provide the letter o admission(Zulassungsbescheid / Aunahmebestti-gung) and documents that prove suicientinancial means and accommodation to thecompetent Austrian authority to get yourresidence permit. You have to pick up yourresidence permit within the validity periodo your visa!
Students who may enter Austria withouta visa may sit the exam without a visa andmay apply aterwards or their residencepermit in Austria within their visa-ree stay.
Family members o students
In case o spouses or minors accompany-ing the student a separate application oreach person must be submitted. Proo oadequate health insurance, accommoda-tion in Austria and a separate documentshowing the inancing o the stay in Aus-tria must be produced or the whole am-ily ( 1,189.56 per month or couples, 122.41 per month per child in 2011). Fam-ily members are not allowed to take up
gainul employment in Austria.
Important notice: Entering Austria with atourist visa (visa C) is not recommendedbecause with such a visa you cannot applyor a residence permit in Austria. A visa can-not be renewed in Austria.
For a renewal o the residence permit an
additional conirmation o the success-ul course o study (Studienerolgsnach-weis) is necessary: examinations equalling8 hours/week or 16 ECTS credits per aca-demic year.
The OeAD Housing Officeprovides accom-modation in flats and student halls of resi-
dence for recipients of OeAD grants, for Eras-
mus students, visiting lecturers and guests.
Particularly in the summer months
(July September) we have free capacities evenfor large groups (~ places). Prices on request.

Arriving in Austria The Stay
Attention: Nationals o EU/EEA countriesand Swiss nationals have to apply addi-tionally or a conirmation o registration(Anmeldebescheinigung) i they stay inAustria or more than 3 months.
Health Insurance or Students
Students admitted to an Austrian universityor university o the arts or UAS degree pro-gramme as regular degree programme stu-dents may take out a comprehensive health
insurance with one o the local public carri-ers (sterreichische Gebietskrankenkasse).This insurance is only available to Austriansand oreigners who have established a legalresidence in Austria (and ulil several re-quirements regarding duration o studies,change o study programmes, income, studyprogrammes already completed).
Forms to apply or this insurance coverageare available at the respective Gebietskran-kenkasse branch oices and the AustrianStudent Union (H sterreichische Hoch-schlerschat).
Accommodation
The Austrian Exchange Service (OeAD) andthe Austrian Student Union (sterreichi-sche Hochschlerschat / H) oer reason-ably priced accommodation or students.For details consult:

The International Oices o the universitiesprovide help in inding private accommo-
dation.
Registration
In Austria it is compulsory to register withthe municipal authorities (Meldeamt: Ge-meindeamt, Magistratisches Bezirksamt)
within three working days o entering thecountry. For this you need a registrationorm (Meldezettel, available rom the regis-tration oices or rom the Internet), whichmust be completed by you and signed byyour landlord / landlady. (In youth hostelsand hotels this registration is carried outby the management when you check in.) Achange o address also has to be reportedto the registration oice within 3 workingdays.
Please do not orget to inorm the registra-tion oice when you leave Austria.

University Preparation Programmes
Vorstudienlehrgnge o the OeAD
In addition many universities oer the pos-sibility to attend language courses at theUniversity Preparation Programmes (Vor-studienlehrgnge) o the OeAD located inVienna, Graz and Leoben (addresses see ap-pendix). By attending these programmesstudents can prepare or supplementaryexaminations (e.g. in mathematics or Ger-
man ), which they have to take to be ad-mitted to a degree programme.
Other institutions and organisations alsooer a variety o German language coursesor oreigners. For more inormation consultCampus Austria, the association o Austrianlanguage schools:

The insurance premium or this coveragecurrently amounts to 24.93 (as o 2011)per month or students. Students can con-sult all physicians who have a contract withthe Gebietskrankenkasse. Students romEU/EEA countries who are in possession oa valid health insurance in their home coun-
tries need the European Health InsuranceCard.
Students who do not meet these require-ments have to take out insurance with pri-vate insurance companies or the local in-surance carriers (Gebietskrankenkassen)themselves (higher premium)!
German Language andUniversity Preparation Courses
The main language o instruction at Aus-trian universities and UAS is German, only aew programmes are taught in English, see:www.oead.at/international_programmes.
In order to be admitted to a degree program-me you have to prove suicient knowledgeo German. At some universities you needproiciency in German corresponding tolevel B2, at others corresponding to levelC1 o the Common European Framework oReerence or Languages. Working in Austria
a) For students who are EU or EEA or Swissnationals there are no restrictions con-cerning work in Austria as long as the iscaland national insurance regulations are met.
Important exception: Students rom Bul-
garia and Romania still need a work permitbeore taking up gainul employment (de-tails see in the ollowing). Students romEstonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia,Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Hungarydo not need a work permit rom May 2011.
b) Students rom third countries need awork permit to work in Austria. The num-ber o work permits is limited. This permitis to be obtained by the employer beore thestudent starts working. The permit will onlybe granted or either income worker (mini-mum income worker 374.02 per month)or or a maximum o three months duringholidays. Work in the ield o science and re-search or on the basis o a contract or work
and labour (sel-employment, Werkver-trag) (by which you are not ully employedand have to take care o your income taxand health insurance yoursel) does not re-quire a permit. Further inormation is avail-able rom the employment service (Arbeits-marktservice / AMS www.ams.or.at). Pleasenote that your stay in Austria cannot be
