About this Document

Introduction

Benefits when Using SAP HANA as primary database for SAP NetWeaver BWUsing SAPHANA as database for SAPNetWeaver BW allows you to benefit from improved performanceand simplified administration and infrastructure:• The query performance is equal to or better than a scenario where SAP NetWeaver BWA is used:

Complex analysis and planning scenarios with unpredictable query types, high data volume, highquery frequency and complex calculations can be processed with a high degree of efficiency, asread accesses are in-memory optimized. Query performance on DataStore objects is comparableto the performance on InfoCubes as well.

• Load processes in SAP HANA-optimized Data Warehouse objects can be processed with a highdegree of efficiency.

• The SAP HANA database combines both the traditional database and SAP NetWeaver BusinessWarehouse Accelerator (SAP NetWeaver BWA), thus helping to cut infrastructure costs. Instead ofdatabase administration and additional SAPNetWeaver BWAadministration, the SAPHANA databaserequires just one set of administration tools, for monitoring or backup and restore for example.

• Data modeling is simplified. Using SAP HANA-optimized objects for example means that it is notnecessary to load to a BWA index. Also, aggregates are not necessary when using the SAP HANAdatabase. The column-based database architecture enables easier remodeling, allowing you forexample to delete characteristics from an InfoCube that still contains data. With the improved queryperformance on DataStore objects, loading data from a DataStore object into a downstream InfoCubecan also become unnecessary, if the InfoCube is only created to improve query performance.

• With its significant compression rate, the column-based storage ensures that less data needs to bematerialized. Column-based storage is used for all InfoProviders that save data as well as for thePersistent Staging Area (PSA). With using "SAP HANA-optimized" objects, performance can beimproved even further.

3.1 Implementation Scenarios

Supported implementation scenarios are:• New installation of SAP NetWeaver BW on the SAP HANA database• After availability: One-Step Upgrade andMigration with DatabaseMigration Option (DMO) of Software

Update Manager (SUM)• Classical Migration of an existing SAP NetWeaver BW installation to the SAP HANA database• Update or Upgrade from SAP NetWeaver BW running on SAP HANA to a higher SAP NetWeaver

release running on SAP HANA

3.1.1 New Installation

2013-08-2913

Introduction

ConsiderationsAdvantages

• Requires transport of complete metadata, completere-loading of all business data from production sourcesystems and re-modeling

• No real data comparison possible

• No risk for production SAP NetWeaverBW system

• Clean system without outdated datamodels, already unicode enabled

• Side by side approach with latest BWenhancements

3.1.2 Classical Migration

Copy, upgrade and migrate (two parallel systems approach)

ConsiderationsAdvantages

• Requires sophisticated migration procedure andcorrect handling of delta queues in SAP NetWeaverBW source systems

• No risk for production SAP NetWeaverBW system

• Only short downtime for production SAPNetWeaver BW

• Production SAP NetWeaver BW andSAPNetWeaver BWonSAPHANA canrun side-by-side (enabling real-timecomparison of results and performance)

3.1.3 One-Step Upgrade and Migration with Database Migration Option (DMO) ofSoftware Update Manager (SUM)

The database migration option (DMO) as part of the Software Update Manager (SUM) will be thestandard database migration option for SAP HANA. To smooth the way to SAP HANA, DMO combinessystem update and database migration for the migration to SAP HANA in one step. DMO can be usedif the migration to SAP HANA includes an upgrade or update (EhP installation or Support Packageimplementation).

As the procedure will become the standard migration procedure towards to SAP HANA forSAP-NetWeaver-based products and is planned to be generally available soon, you should consider italready today for the planning of any upcoming migration projects to SAP HANA.

2013-08-2914

Introduction

For SAP NetWeaver BW, DMO will be available for the following source releases:• 7.0• 7.01• 7.30• 7.31• 7.4

Unicode conversion is also planned to be available with DMO with a later SUM 1.0 SP. As long as theconversion is not available, DMO can be used for unicode enabled source systems.

For more information, see:• Blog in SAP Community Network: DMO: upgrade and migrate SAP systems to SAP HANA

• Blog on www.saphana.com: Upgrade and Migration - BW on HANA -> section "DMO Option at aGlance"

• SAP Note 1799545

3.2 Prerequisites and Implementation Considerations

This section lists the prerequisites and considerations for implementing SAP NetWeaver BW runningon the SAP HANA database:

Pre-installed SAP HANA databaseThe SAP HANA appliance software with SAP HANA database is pre-installed by your certified SAPpartner on a server separate from the SAP NetWeaver BW system. Apply the latest available SAPHANA revision before the migration.

Note that the components of SAP HANA and of the SAP HANA database can only be installed bycertified hardware partners on validated hardware running a specific operating system. Any othersystems or content developed with these systems is not supported by SAP.

During the setup of the SAPNetWeaver BW system the ABAP schema and the data are loaded remotelyinto the SAP HANA database.

Note:

If you update SAPNetWeaver BW on SAPHANA from SAPNetWeaver 7.3 to EhP1 for SAPNetWeaver7.3, you have to update the SAP HANA database to at least SPS 04 before upgrading the SAPNetWeaver system.

If you update SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA from SAP NetWeaver 7.3 to SAP NetWeaver 7.4,you have to update the SAP HANA database to at least SPS 05 before updating the SAP NetWeaversystem.

For more information on the SAP HANA appliance software, see the SAP Help Portal athttp://help.sap.com/hana_appliance.

2013-08-2915

Introduction

Installation with separate database serverOnly a standard installation with a separate database server or a distributed installation with a separatedatabase server is supported as target system architecture, as shown in the figure below.

Apart from the pre-installed SAP HANA database and the additional applications that it requires, otherapplications must not be installed on the database server. This is because other applications mighthave a negative effect on performance. This also includes parts of the distributed central instance (anapplication server must not be installed on the database server for example).

To avoid performance issues, only install the SAP HANA database and the required additionalapplications - but no other applications - on the database server. This also includes parts of a distributedcentral instance (for example, do not install an application server on the database server).

Technical release informationFor technical release information such as supported operating systems, see the Product AvailabilityMatrix (PAM) for SAP NetWeaver:• PAM for SAP NetWeaver 7.3 (with all EHPs)

• PAM for SAP NetWeaver 7.4

Add-Ons• Not all add-ons for SAP NetWeaver BW are currently supported on the SAP HANA database. For

information on limitations for application enablement, see the "Restrictions in relation to the use ofadd-ons" section in SAP Note 1600929.

For general information on the add-on compatibility of SAP NetWeaver, see the following SAP Notes:• SAP Note 1532805 for SAP NetWeaver 7.3• SAP Note 1652738 for SAP EhP1 for SAP NetWeaver 7.3

• BI Content on SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA database is supported like on other databases.

2013-08-2916

Introduction

Note:In the BI Content Add-On releases 7.35 and 7.36/7.46, there are currently constraints regardingprocessing, compression and size of TLOG data in the POS Inbound Processing Engine as thecentral component of SAP POS Data Management. For more information, see SAP Note 1648861.

Support Package recommendation for SAP NetWeaver BWWe advise you to apply the latest available Support Package for SAP NetWeaver BW:• For SAP NetWeaver 7.3 the minimum requirement is SPS 05. The recommended SPS level is SPS

07 or higher.

• For EhP1 for SAP NetWeaver 7.3 the minimum requirement is SPS 04.

• For SAP NetWeaver 7.4 the minimum requirement is SPS 02. However, we recommend to applyonly SPS 05 or higher for EDWuse case scenarios. Apply SPS 02 for embedded use case scenariosonly.

Java implications• With SAP NetWeaver BW 7.3, SAP EhP1 for SAP NetWeaver BW 7.3 and SAP NetWeaver 7.4

SPS 02 running on the SAP HANA database Java cannot be deployed. If you want to use Java andfunctions that require BI Java, you need to deploy BI Java on a separate server.

• ABAP and Java dual-stack systems are not supported with SAP NetWeaver BW running on the SAPHANA database. If your existing SAP NetWeaver BW system is a dual-stack system (ABAP+Java),you need to separate the ABAP stack from the Java stack before the upgrade.

For more information, see the "Preparation" chapters for the release to which you want to migrateto.

UnicodeFor SAP NetWeaver BW running on the SAP HANA database, a Unicode system is required. If yourexisting SAP NetWeaver BW system has not yet been converted to Unicode, you can perform theUnicode conversion during database migration.

Use the transaction SPUMG for the conversion preparation before performing the database migration(heterogeneous system copy) or before running DMO.

For more information on the Unicode conversion, see SAP Note 1051576.

Migration of SAP NetWeaver BW authorization conceptSAP NetWeaver 7.3 and higher releases do not support the old role-based reporting authorizations. Ifyou have not migrated the reporting authorizations to the analysis authorization concept introducedwith SAP NetWeaver 7.0, you have to migrate to the new analysis authorization concept before or afterthe upgrade of your existing SAP NetWeaver BW system to SAP NetWeaver 7.3 or higher. It dependson your upgrade strategy whether you migrate the authorizations before or after the upgrade. For moreinformation on the migration, see the documentation on analysis authorizations in the SAP Help Portalat http://help.sap.com.

Delta loadsIf you have delta-enabled DataSources that produce huge data volume, problems can occur in the timebetween preparation of the homogeneous system copy and start of the new SAPNetWeaver BW system

2013-08-2917

Introduction

running on SAP HANA. This can result in the delta queues in the SAP ERP system running over, orthe data volume collected in the queues being so huge that the usual time window for loading this datainto the new SAP NetWeaver BW system running on SAP HANA is not sufficient. It might therefore beuseful to load these huge delta queues already after initial configuration of the copied SAP NetWeaverBW system, and even before the upgrade or database migration to SAP HANA, thus reducing the sizeof the queues.

SAP HANA optimized objects in SAP NetWeaver BWIn SAPNetWeaver BW running on SAPHANA database, standard InfoCubes and semantically partitionedobjects can be converted to SAP HANA optimized objects. This results in changed data structures andallows significant performance gains in loading and activating data. For information on conversion toSAP HANA optimized objects, see the chapter about "Post-Migration Activities in SAP NetWeaver BW"for the release to which you want to migrate to.

SAP NetWeaver BWAIf you use SAP NetWeaver BWA with your existing SAP NetWeaver BW system, the SAP HANAdatabase replaces SAP NetWeaver BWA after migration. This then becomes obsolete.

For InfoCubes with data persistency in SAP NetWeaver BWA, the content is deleted during the systemmigration to SAP HANA, and the InfoCubes are set to inactive. If you want to continue using one ofthese InfoCubes as a standard InfoCube, you need to activate it again and reload the data from theformer primary persistence (DataStore object for example).

For BWWorkspaces, before databasemigration, backup copies for BWWorkspace data can be created. The data can be recovered after database migration. All BW Workspace objects are then active andexecutable. For more information, see SAP Note 1644694. If you are working in Release 7.3 SPS5 orSupport Package 6, see also SAP Note 1660165. Note that backup and recovery of BW Workspacedata can be automated within the pre migration and post migration task lists provided by SAP Note1734333.

Automation of Housekeeping as well as Before- and After-Upgrade and Migration TasksMany tasks in the area of housekeeping as well as in the area of preparation and follow-up steps forthe upgrade and database migration have been automated within task lists based on the ABAP taskmanager infrastructure. For more information, see SAP Note 1734333 (for upgrade and migration) andSAP Note 1829728 (for housekeeping).

Parallel implementation approachSAP strongly recommends following a parallel approach in which you keep your production landscapein place for the time being as a fallback. You can implement SAP NetWeaver BW scenario by scenario, with the assurance that the existing production landscape is still available as a fallback if required. Thisapproach greatly mitigates risk while simultaneously enabling you to familiarize yourself with theadministration and capabilities of SAP HANA. SAP strongly recommends that you consider the highavailability and backup/recovery procedures of SAPHANA before starting to use it in production systems.

Perform the following tasks:

More InformationTasksMilestones

Upgrade to NetWeaver BW 7.3x-> "chapter 1: Roadmap andtechnology facts" (SCN)

Before preparing the upgrade of your BW system, consider the following:• For dual-stack systems, you need to isolate

the ABAP stack, by performing a dual-stacksplit procedure or by deinstalling the Javastack for example.

• Decide on the Java options for SAPNetWeaver 7.31:• Upgrade Java to 7.3 EhP1 (incl. ADS)

Upgrade limitations:• No automatic file system conversion to

7.x, if not done manually• No automatic SAPCryptoLib import to

Kernel directory• Disable SNC configuration

• Fresh Install of Java 7.3 EhP1 (withoutADS)

• As for using SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.0 to-gether with SAPNetWeaver BW, SAP recom-mends leveraging the built-in Java Server ofBI 4.0.

1.1 Planning

Upgrade to NetWeaver BW 7.3x-> "chapter 1: Roadmap andtechnology facts" (SCN)
