UAV RADOMES

Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) have become an integral part of modern surveillance systems and are now recognised as the fi rst choice for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms. Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAVs) are also becoming increasingly popular with armed forces around the world. The current generation of UCAVs tend to be derived from surveillance UAV designs, while future UCAVs promise to be faster, more agile and stealthy, rivalling the best of today’s manned fi ghters. GKN Aerospace Applied Composites has more than 50 years experience of designing and producing airborne radomes. It all started in 1957 with the launch of the Saab Lansen aircraft programme, the fi rst Swedish fi ghter aircraft to be equipped with a radar system. Since then GKN Aerospace Applied Com-posites has continued to refi ne and develop the know-how, experience and resources it takes to cost-eff ectively develop and manufacture advanced radomes, particularly for UAV / UCAV applications.

Synthetic Aperture Aadar (SAR)

A Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system utilizes an antenna which receives successive echo signals at diff erent UAV positions during flight. The echo signals are subsequently pro-cessed together to create an image of the target region. Current state-of-the-art resolution is approximately 10 cm . The SAR system is used for all-weather, day and night, surveillance and reconnaissance. GKN Aerospace Applied Composites has the know-how and resources to develop the high performance, broad band, light weight, sandwich design which is required for SAR systems. Special attention is paid to minimizing the amplitude and phase variation as the antenna scans, since this is crucial for SAR performance.

Line of Sight (LOS) and satcom datalink

Many UAV systems are provided with equipment for Up and Down-link of data. For instance, the UAV can be given updated mission data, or the UAV can down-link real time pictures from a war scene. The Line of Sight (LOS) system provides a point-to-point communication channel, while the Satcom data-link utilizes the satellite as a microwave relay. LOS and Satcom radomes are designed as light weight, sandwich designs which are optimized for low insertion loss in the Rx and Tx frequency bands.

The purpose of Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) is to gather infor-mation concerning the enemy by interception of foreign sig-nals. These systems are, by nature, very broad banded, which sets high demands on the radome design. GKN Aerospace Applied Composites’s extensive knowledge of hybrid sandwich radomes, together with our understanding of careful material selection, allows us to off er state-of-the-art SIGINT radome designs.
