Sanskrit, like an all embracing mother, brings forth lullabies of the soul,
waves from the depths of creation. Once installed in the heart,
never abandons one. Ever protecting, it urges us on to that which we are,
She indicates a gentle path home. Already a language of worlds, timeless, infinite.

Origin of sanskrit
Sanskrit is the most ancient member of the Indo-European group of languages. This group includes Latin, Greek, English, Welsh, German, Russian, Lithuanian etc. All these languages evolved from a single parent dialect. Every language in India has a direct and clear foundation in Sanskrit. All of them follow the same alphabet with some adaptations. Sanskrit is the oldest recorded Indo-European language. The only other language that can claim the same antiquity is the Hittite language, which dates back to 2000 to 3000 BC. Sanskrit was the official language of India until 1100 AD when the invading Muslims patronized common languages as a tactic to suppress Indian cultural and religious tradition and supplant it with their own beliefs. Despite this Sanskrit is still the language favoured in India for many uses, primarily for religious rituals. Sanskrit continues to be an important influence in philosophical and scientific circles today. In 1985 Rick Briggs, a NASA researcher, after exhaustive and extensive study named Sanskrit the most comprehensive and compatible language for computers. This is because it is the only natural language in the world capable of functioning with mathematical precision and embodying the basic principles of artificial intelligence. Such a revelation is creating a new interest in the scope of Sanskrit in modern life. The Vedic Civilization veda samskRti Sanskrit is the language in which the Vedas are written. The Vedas are the treatises on transcendental wisdom and self-realization. Vedic civilization originated on the Indus valley. It flowered into a complete society with a colourful spectrum of arts and sciences. The first treatises arising from of this culture is known as veda, which was divided into four by the great sage vyAsa. The next set of works was known as darzana. There are six main divisions of darzana. They are known as nyAya, vaizeSika, sAnkhya, yoga, mImAmsa and vedAnta. After this came upaniSads and then the purAnas and itihAsas. pANini –the first grammarian pANini is the first and foremost grammarian of Sanskrit. Treatises say he overheard the sound vibrations of the cosmic dance of creation by Lord ziva during one of his deep meditations. He decoded fourteen mantras from this sound of cosmic dance. These were known as mAhezvara sutrANi or ziva sUtra jAlam. This was composed of all the letters in the Sanskrit alphabet in a particular fashion. pANini discovered the logic in it and used these mantras to restructure the entire language. The language used before pANini was then called ‘prAkrta’ –meaning unrefined and unstructured. The word Sanskrit stands for ‘refined, cultured, structured or perfected’. ‘pALi’, the language in which Buddhism is recorded is a version of prAkrta. His main works are known as aSTAdhyAyi and siddhAnta kaumudi.

The forms of sound - zabdam Sound emerges in four stages. parA supreme, transcendental situated in brain pazyantI conceptualised, mentally visualised situated in nervous system madhymA subliminal, internally audible situated in naval vaikharI acoustic, uttered sound situated in vocal cord Normally humans can only hear the vaikharI form of sound, where as yogis (seers or liberated souls) can hear the entire spectrum of sounds that starts from the parA form. Phonation - sphoTam Sound vibrations manifest in our bindu visarga cakra, a point at the back of the head where a brAHman grow a tuft of hair called zikha. From here the sound travels towards the kunDalini (the coiled serpent power sleeping at the root of the spinal canal) in parA form. Then it travels towards the umbilicus and is known as pazyantI. Gradually it advances towards the throat and vocal cords –madhyamA. When it travels from the vocal cords to the outer body it is known as vaikharI. Some aspects of Sanskrit alphabet - akSara mAlA Samskrtam is the language of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain literature. The Samskrtam script is known as deva-nAgari - the language of the gods. There are various schools of alphabets in Samskrtam. They span from 47 letters to 56. Vowels, consonants, semivowels, sibilants and sonate aspirants are laid out separately. Writing the Sanskrit script is unique. All letters have three parts. A distinctive part, which makes one letter look different from the other, a vertical stroke and a horizontal stroke. Usually the distinctive part is written first, the vertical stroke next and horizontal stroke of the entire word is written together when the word is completed. In Samskrtam vowels there are some unusual letters. They sound like consonants, but classified as vowels. A vowel in Samskrtam are known as ‘svara’, meaning expressing (ra) the self (sva). It is nonverbal. A consonant is ‘vyaJjana’, meaning to bring clarity (aJjana) in a unique way (vi). The unusual vowels and the possible reason for being classified as vowels are given below.
® R This represents the sound of raising kunDalini.
Ò LR This represents the sound of falling kunDalini.
a’( M This represents the sound of liberated life.
a” H This represents the sound of life on this platform.
Resonating sound is represented by a dot on top of a crescent, which symbolises detachment, selflessness and freedom, is called anusvAram that is written as an upward directed cresent moon and a dot inside. Discharge of sound is represented by the visargam that is written as ‘:’, which also represents the sound of life on material platform.
9
aum – the body and soul of universe aum, the universal mantra is the sound of life. This is the soul of any sound. aum is composed of three syllables a, u and m. a is the first letter in the alphabet, symbolising pure consciousness and harmony. m is the last letter representing the material energy, and u represents the ultimate energy in this mantra. aum represents everything and every stage of life.
a Creation Consciousness satva braHmA u Existence Energy rajas viSNu m Reform Matter tamas ziva
Aum is written traditionally . This is made of three main parts. Each part represents one of the three syllables. The remaining parts are the crescent and the dot. Crescent or ‘nAdam’ stands for the wave and the dot or ‘bindu’ represents the particle. Together, they represent the ‘wave and particle’ nature of the universe. This is the beginning of ‘gAndhaRva veda’. The main body of aum is made of three circles, partially invisible. They represent the kunDalini zakti. kunDalini is the goddess pArvati in our body. Lord ziva rests on the sahasrAra padma. Bringing kunDalini or pARvati to our own ziva is the process of ‘layam’ (transcendence). On a universal level it is known as ‘praLayam’ (great dissolution).

In the zAkta tantra school of philosophy, there is said to exist a bindu cakra, at the back of the head, in the part where brAhmAns grow their small tuft of hair, although
it is often not mentioned in traditional chakrologies. This centre is said to be where the bindu fluid is produced, a fluid that can become either the nectar of immortality, or
the poison of death. It is intimately connected to the vizuddha cakra, and awakening the vizuddha cakra is said to awaken the bindu cakra. In metaphysical terms it is
also said to be the point at which begins creation, and the unity becomes the many. Practices believed to balance this chakra include pranayama, Vajroli mudra (celibacy,
the drawing in of sexual fluids), and Yoni mudra. Some western occultists associate this chakra with the hidden kabbalistic sephirah of Da'at, knowledge, which is also

Abstract mantras (Nirguna type)
so/ham
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
I am That: The meditator is existence itself. He is without form, without quality, without past, present or future. No bonds or limitations restrict the aspirant who has Soham firmly fixed in his hand.
aham brahmA-smi
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
I am Brahman: This is a great vedAntic formula. The meditator asserts himself to be One with the ever-present Brahman. In doing so, he denies confinement to the body and mind, and affirms unity with the Absolute.
tat tvam asi
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
That Thou Art: "That" is the eternal Brahman, and "thou" is the meditator. Tat Twam Asi, is one of the greatest of the Vedantic statements, identifies the individual as one and the same with Brahaman, the Absolute Substratum of Creation.
aum
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
It consists of: a, u and m. It signifies the three periods of time, the three states of consciousness and all of existence. A is the waking state, U is the dreaming state, and M is the deep sleep state. OM contains nada and bindu. Nada is the prolonged vowel sound and bindu is the humming sound, made with closed lips, with which the Mantra ends.
