“ When [my friend] came to faith, he made a decision that one day he would die for Christ. Every Christian in North Korea has made that choice… I am convinced he can take the suffering because he constantly reminds himself of the joy that is set before him.”

– Christian from North Korea.

This Christian’s friend was arrested when the police found a Bible in his home. He was badly beaten and imprisoned for his faith in Jesus.

Pray “There are a lot of struggles and obstacles in our daily lives; however, we have Jesus Christ who is the way, the truth, and the life.” – Christian from North Korea.

Pray for North Korean believers to fix their eyes on Jesus in the midst of suffering.

Pray for God to provide for those who desperately need food, water and shelter.

Our WorkOur ministry to North Korean Christians includes emergency relief like food, shelter and medicine; distributing Bibles; and strengthening the church through radio broadcasts.

North Korea has been ranked as the hardest country to live as a Christian since 2002. Christians face extreme levels of pressure and violence in all areas of life, even just owning a Bible is illegal.

All citizens are taught to worship Kim Jong-un from a very young age. Many Christians live as secret believers, and don’t even share their faith with their children or family. If Christians are discovered, they are sent to labour camps, tortured or even killed on the spot. Their families, considered guilty by association, share the same fate.

“When I brought the New Testament into my house… I began to read from the Bible and she started to walk!” – Saif* from Afghanistan.

Saif* heard the gospel on a Christian radio broadcast. He came to faith later on, after his daughter was healed. Saif and his wife face daily pressure and live as secret believers.

Officially there are no Christians in Afghanistan. Believers are in hiding and although there are small groups of Christians, there is no organised church. Christians are intensely cautious about who they share their faith with. If a believer is found out, they could be excluded from the community, admitted to a mental institution, or killed for their faith.

There is no safe place in Somalia for Christians to practice their faith. Almost all Christians come from a Muslim background. Community and family members persecute anyone who leaves Islam and converts who are discovered are usually killed. Even suspected Christians are persecuted. Older Christians say that the generation born in the 1990s have become intolerant and some believers “were killed by their children’s children”. The government believes that there are no Somali Christians.

“All new believers start as isolated believers… they come to Jesus because of dreams or because of Christian television or websites… The trouble for new believers really starts when they speak out about Jesus.” – Charley*, Open Doors worker for North African countries.

Libya has been in civil war since 2011. Organised crime thrives and Islamic extremists violently attack and kidnap Christians. Believers caught evangelising can be arrested. All Libyans are considered to be Muslim and are forbidden from going to church. Christian converts from Islam must hide their faith, especially from family. Our WorkThrough our local partners, we distribute Bibles and Christian literature, help Christians find jobs and train believers.

In 2018, violence increased dramatically in Algeria and a dozen churches were closed. Algeria rose 20 ranks on the 2019 World Watch List.

The main source of violence comes from relatives of Christian converts. It’s even more dangerous for Christians in rural and conservative Islamic parts of the country. Christians are becoming bolder in their faith and have even been imprisoned for sharing their faith on social media.

Though the influence of Islamic extremism is increasing, there is an openness to the gospel and people are coming to faith in Jesus.

Despite the country’s enormous amounts of natural gas and even though almost every citizen is literate, 60% of the population are unemployed and poverty is high. Turkmenistan also has a bad reputation for human rights violations with overpopulated prison and labour camps where thousands are kept in appalling conditions.

During the days of the Soviet Union, atheism was enforced by the state. Religion is still viewed with suspicion and distrust, and the church is heavily regulated. Police raids, surveillance and confiscation of Christian materials are common.

Most Turkmens identify as Muslim. Converting from Islam to Christianity can lead to violent persecution and rejection from family and community.

Most Christians live in the south of the country and many face increasing pressure due to the threat of Islamic extremist groups, like al-Qaeda, from the north. Poverty is not only a large problem in the community, but also for the church. The underground church is very dependent on foreign aid and struggles with jealousy and mistrust. This is becoming a barrier for people to grow in their faith. Without a strong church, new believers miss opportunities to be discipled and end up isolated.

Poverty is rampant in Mauritania. One third of Mauritanian children are malnourished and society has also become more accepting of Islamic extremism. Many churches are still unable to receive building permits despite meeting all the requirements. Local authorities are afraid of seeming to support the growth of Christianity.

Open Doors works to provide Christians in Sri Lanka with emergency relief for victims of violence. We also run income generating projects for those struggling to find work and we prepare the church for future persecution.

Even after the civil war ended in 2009, Christians and Muslims continue to be persecuted by Buddhist extremists. Hundreds of Christian families are still displaced and struggling to survive. Anyone who converts to Christianity is seen as betraying their family and community. New believers are often harassed, discriminated and many even face violent persecution. Many Protestant or independent churches have been asked to shut down.

Colombia has a long history of organised crime and corruption. An increase in new armed groups and the growth of illegal crops has kept the level of violence high. Various criminal groups take possession of villages and place difficult restrictions on churches. Christian leaders have been abducted and some murdered as intolerance for Christianity has increased.

“ Jesus is my inspiration. He worked for the people. I want to do the same too.”

– Mariam from Bangladesh.

Mariam used to be a Muslim but has now dedicated her life to Jesus. She was recently involved in an Open Doors training seminar, and has been actively involved in outreach to Muslims.

In Bangladesh, Christian converts come from a Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu background. They face the most pressure from family and community, as well as from Islamic extremist groups and religious leaders. As demands to introduce Sharia (Islamic) law increase, believers are regularly monitored and treated with hostility, especially those who have converted from Islam. Believers are often forced to meet in secret.

Christians have lived in the Palestinian Territories (referring to the separate regions of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank) since the first century AD. They now make up 1% of the population. Traditional churches are hesitant to accept new Christians who have left Islam to follow Jesus as it could upset the Islamic community. The struggling economy and the fear of Islamic extremism has caused many Christians to leave the Palestinian Territories.

In Gaza, unemployment (especially for young people) is high. There’s only electricity a couple of hours a day. According to some Palestinian Christians, if the current situation continues, there will be no more Christians in one generations time.

“In spite of many difficulties that Christians face in our country, God is keeping and protecting His Church.” – A pastor from Azerbaijan.

Despite restrictions on the church in Azerbaijan, this pastor is seeing great growth and many people wanting to be baptised.

Officially, Azerbaijan is a secular country with religious freedom. However, Christians are often under surveillance and don’t know who to trust. The law is used to justify fines, police raids, detentions and imprisonments. Spies are also sent to church gatherings. Compulsory re-registration laws have led to the de-registration of many churches, making them targets for the authorities.
