Solar PerformanceThermal Factors and the RAT EquationAll shade fabrics are unique, and for that reason, each one reacts differently to solar energy.

When measuring the thermal performance of the shade fabric itself, the RAT equation can be used

to compare one fabric to another:

Rs (% of Solar Reflection) + As (% of Solar Absorption) + Ts (Solar Transmission) = 100% of Total Solar Energy

All Mermet fabrics are quality tested for thermal and optical performance. These tests provide us with quantitative, measured

performance which help us calculate the solar energy admitted through a glazing system (window glass, frame and shade fabric)

and its overall effect on shade performance and interior comfort.

Heat Blockage Factors:Solar Heat Gain Coefficient indicates how effective a building envelope system is at blocking heat from solar energy. To calculate

a product’s SHGC requires understanding the specific makeup of the entire exterior envelope system (window, glass and frame).

Due to the level of complexity with possible glazing and frame combinations, Mermet has simplified the data by referencing

SHGC as an approximate percent improvement when using our fabrics in combination with common window units. The higher

the percentage, the more efficient the fabric is at blocking heat. For example, if a fabric has an SHGC percent improvement of 59%,

the overall SHGC of the system can be found by multiplying 0.59 by the SHGC of the project specific glazing (center of glass value)

and then by subtracting that number from the original SHGC of the glazing.

System SHGC = Glass SHGC - (Glass SHGC* % Improvement)

Optical Factors: Visible Light Transmittance Tv | VLTVisible Light Transmission (VLT) is commonly used to represent the amount of visible light that passes through the entire window

system. Tv refers to the measured transmission of light through the fabric only. Due to the level of complexity with calculating

VLT, Mermet has simplified the data by referencing VLT as a percent reduction. For example, to calculate the overall system

VLT (glass + fabric), multiply the glass VLT by the fabric Tv.

Fabric ColorDid you know shade performance such as view-through and heat blockage are significantly affected by color?

In fact, openness factor is only part of the equation when determining the performance of shade fabric. Color represents

the other factor impacting the degree to which fabrics reflect or absorb the three types of solar radiation:

ultraviolet light (UV), visible light (Tv / VLT), and infrared radiation (IR) or heat. Here’s why:

n Dark colors absorb all visible light wavelengths. Because dark fabrics absorb versus reflect, they are less energy efficient, however, better at glare control, allowing for greater view-through.

n Light colors reflect all visible light wavelengths. Because light fabrics reflect versus absorb, they are energy efficient, but not as effective at controlling glare, contributing to decreased view-through.
