    The durable Iris Power Epoxy Mica Capacitors (EMCs) are

    designed to detect Partial Discharge (PD) activity in electricalequipment (AC motors, generators, switchgear and dry-typetransformers) while not imposing on the machine’s operation orreliability in any way.

    Iris Power EMCs arepermanently installed (minimumone per phase) as close aspossible to the equipment tobe monitored to maximizesensitivity. In order to improvenoise separation, the Iris PowerEMCs are installed directionallyor differentially, depending onthe equipment.

    Iris Power’s 80pF EMCs aredesigned to block the 50/60Hzpower frequency and allow onlyhigh frequency (>40MHz) signalsto pass through, be collectedand analyzed by an appropriateIris Power portable instrument orcontinuous monitor.

    PD monitoring is applicable todiverse equipment installations.That is why Qualitrol-Iris Poweroffers four different voltage-rated EMCs – 6.9kV, 16kV, 25kV and 28kV. The choice of whichcouplers to install is dependenton the operating voltage of theequipment.

    UNIQUE FEATURES

    Mica Splittings DielectricIris Power EMCs are safe for usein operating equipment becausethey have excellent electricalproperties due to an 80 mm(3 inch) layer of epoxyimpregnated mica splittingsas the main dielectric. Incomparison, a typical 13.8kV stator coil has only about 3 mm

    (0.25 inch) thickness of epoxymica paper.

     Voltage Endurance TestingIndependent voltage endurancetesting (IEEE 1043) proved thatthe 16kV Iris Power EMCwithstands over 1000 hours at30kVrms. According to statisticalmethods (IEEE 930-1987), thistranslates into 60,000 years of use at normal operating voltage.

    By comparison, the average13.8kV coil is expected towithstand only 400 hours of exposure to 30kVrms. The IrisPower EMC’s excellentendurance and thermal stabilityis due to the use of micasplittings, as opposed to micapaper or ceramics.

    • 150kV DC hipot (50kV required by ANSI C37.20.2)

    • 150kV impulse (95kV required by ANSI C37.20.2)

    HAZARDOUS LOCATIONS

    The Iris Power EMCs can be used with Iris Power instrumentscertified for hazardous locations provided that they are installedin the appropriate enclosure to comply with the ATEX directiveor UL certification for hazardous locations.
