Ilook forward to working for and with President Shalala, our student-athletes,coaches and staff as we focus on permanently establishing the Miami Hurricanesas the premier athletics program in the nation.”

At Ohio, Hocutt significantly reorganized the athletic department’s annual giv-ing program. His leadership led to an increase in fundraising by more than 75 per-cent, including the securing of the second-largest major gift in school athletics his-tory. He also increased season ticket sales in football by 112 percent and in men’sbasketball by 50 percent. He developed a comprehensive plan to improve the facili-ties for the football stadium and its press box, as well as the Convocation Center, which houses all administrative and coaches’ offices.

That 400 percent increase in annual giv-ing was one of the highest percentage increases in intercollegiate athletics history.

Beginning in 1999, Hocutt served in a leadership position in the strategic plan-ning for a $100 million capital campaign. The $120 million campaign was unique inthat it focused on facility construction or improvements for each of Oklahoma’s20 sports.

Prior to joining the Oklahoma staff, Hocutt served as the assistant director oflicensing at the NCAA. In that position, he worked with corporate partners andlicensees to create new revenue producing initiatives to support and promote all81 NCAA championships.

He began his career in sports administration as the assistant director of mar-keting and promotions at Kansas State University. While at Kansas State, he imple-mented revenue-producing activities for the athletics department, including corpo-rate partner sponsorships and ticket sales.

A former student-athlete at Kansas State, Hocutt was a four-year letterman asa linebacker while leading the Big 8 Conference in tackles and being named to theAll-Big 8 Conference team during his junior season. In 1993, The Sporting Newsselected him as one of the top 20 underrated players in the nation. Hocutt alsoserved as a team captain his senior season. As a prospective student-athlete, you may have the athletic poten-tial to row at the Division I level. If so, you probably will be exposed to anenormous amount of recruitment activities from universities through-out the country.

During the recruitment process, coaches will reference various NCAArules and regulations. The rules are designed for to ease the pressureson prospective student-athletes and to level the playing field so that alluniversities operate within the same guidelines.

During the recruiting process you may have the following questions:• When and how often can I visit an institution’s campus?• When, where and how often can a coach telephone me?• How many times can a coach observe me in practice and/

or competition?• What academic criteria must I meet to be eligible to row Division I

level? The answers to these questions and more can be obtained from the

University of Miami Compliance Office or the NCAA by requesting theNCAA Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete. The guide may beprovided to a prospective student-athlete at any time. The guideaddresses issues related to Divisions I, II and III academic eligibility, finan-cial aid, recruitment and more.

ACC “Tradition of Excellence”In 2007, the ACC became the first conference in NCAA history to

have 10 teams finish the season with 20 or more wins. In addition, 10ACC teams took part in post-season play, including an ACC record sevenNCAA Tournament teams.

For the first time in league history, the ACC surpassed the 2.4 millionmark in attendance in 2006-07. The 12 league schools totaled 2,435,441over 213 regular season games and six ACC Tournament sessions.

For the third consecutive year, the ACC surpassed the 2.2 millionmark in basketball attendance in 2008, with the 12 league teams total-ing 2,355,822 over 203 regular-season games and six tournament ses-sion.

The stature of ACC basketball is no where more clearly defined thanby the league’s regional and national television exposure. A record-set-ting 285 television appearances involving ACC teams, highlight the 2007-08 basketball schedule, including 162 appearances on national televisionnetworks.

The ChampionshipsThe conference will conduct championship competition in 25 sports

during the 2008-09 academic year —12 for men and 13 for women. The first ACC championship was held in swimming on February 25,

1954. The conference did not conduct championships in cross country, wrestling or tennis during the first year.

The 12 sports for men include football, cross country, soccer, basket-ball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, tennis, golfand lacrosse. Fencing, which was started in 1971, was discontinued in1981.

Championships for women are currently conducted in cross country, volleyball, field hockey, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoortrack, tennis, golf, lacrosse, softball and rowing.

A HistoryThe Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the

Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C., with seven charter members -Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, SouthCarolina and Wake Forest — drawing up the conference by-laws.

The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Conferencecame early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the SouthernConference’s annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven mem-bers met in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and thename became officially the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Suggestions from fans for the name of the new conferenceappeared in the region’s newspapers prior to the meeting in Raleigh. Some of the names suggested were: Dixie, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, EastCoast, Seaboard, Colonial, Tobacco, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, Southern Sevenand the Shoreline.

Duke’s Eddie Cameron recommended that the name of the confer-ence be the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the motion was passedunanimously. The meeting concluded with each member institutionassessed $200.00 to pay for conference expenses.

On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefieldand officially admitted the University of Virginia as the league’s eighthmember. The first, and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC cameon June 30, 1971, when the University of South Carolina tendered its res-ignation.

The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, whenGeorgia Tech was admitted. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from theSoutheastern Conference in January of 1964.

The ACC expanded to nine members on July 1, 1991, with the addi-tion of Florida State , and then expanded to 11 members on July 1,2004, with the addition of the University of Miami and Virginia Tech. OnOctober 17, 2003, Boston College accepted an invitation to become theleague’s 12th member starting with the 2005-06 academic year.

TraditionConsistency. It is the mark of true excellence in

any endeavor. However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, com-

petition has become so balanced and so competitivethat it is virtually impossible to maintain a high levelof consistency.

Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied theodds. Now in its 56th year of competition, the ACChas long enjoyed the reputation as one of thestrongest and most competitive intercollegiate con-ferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjec-

ture, the numbers support it.Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 109

national championships, including 57 in women’s competition and 52 inmen’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-ath-letes 145 times in men’s competition and 92 times in women’s action.

If success is best measured in terms of wins and losses, then the ACCis unrivaled in NCAA annals. With North Carolina’s victory over Illinois inthe 2005 NCAA title game, ACC teams have captured 10 NCAA basketballchampionships, including six over the last 18 years.

No conference has posted a better NCAA Tournament record thanthe ACC since the NCAA’s inaugural tournament in 1939. With an impres-sive 85-43 mark over the past 10 years, ACC teams have posted an NCAATournament-best mark of 329-164 for a sterling .667 winning percent-age against the nation’s toughest competition.

In the 24 years of the current 64-team field, the ACC has produced22 Final Four teams, an average of almost one per year and five morethan any other conference.

Since the 1985 NCAA Tournament when the field was expanded to 64teams, ACC teams have been even more impressive compiling a 233-115(.670) NCAA record, including 63“Sweet 16” appearances and 22 Final Fourberths — all NCAA Tournament bests. Since 1985, 63 of the 120 ACC teamsreceiving NCAA berths have won at least two NCAA Tournament games.

Following their title run in 2005, North Carolina’s Tar Heels lead allACC schools with four NCAA basketball championships to their credit.Duke has claimed three national titles, NC State two and Maryland one.The Tar Heels have captured NCAA titles in 1957, 1982, 1993 and 2005while the Blue Devils won their third title in 2001, following back-to-backchampionships in 1991 and 1992. The Wolfpack walked away with thecoveted crown in 1974 and 1983 while the Terps claimed the 2002national title.

The ACC has 10 or more NCAA Tournament wins in four of the lasteight years and 13 times overall and the league has not posted a losingrecord in NCAA Tournament play since 1987. The conference’s 19-yearnon-losing streak in NCAA Tournament play is tops among all confer-ences.

Since 1981, the ACC has produced 37 consensus All-Americans - 17more than any other conference and has accounted for 25 percent ofthe nation’s consensus All-Americans (37-of-146).

Seven of the last 12 and nine of the last 16 consensus NationalPlayers of the Year have come from the ACC. Since 1975, the ACC hashad 16 consensus national players of the year — 13 more than any otherconference. Nine of the ACC’s 16 National Players of the Year were unani-mous selections.

A year ago the ACC led all conferences with 53 players on NBA ros-ters. In addition, over the past three years 33 ACC players have madetheir NBA debuts, including 15 in 2006, eight in 2007 and 10 last year.

This past June the ACC had four players selected in the annual NBAdraft. The ACC has had the most, or tied for the most, first round draftpicks in four of the past seven years and in 10 of the last 16. Since 1986,the ACC has had 89 first round selections (17 more than any other con-ference) and has had at least one first round selection in 20 consecutiveNBA drafts.
