Project Specific Objectives:1. Create a Kufi, an African hat (Synthesis;
3.2, 3.5).2. Create/arrange/organize a pattern using
lines, shapes, and intermediate colors (Synthesis; 3.14).
3. Integrate the continent of Africa into the Kufi pattern, creating a center of interest (focus, emphasis) (Synthesis; 3.14).
4. Discuss the purposes and functions of art and hats in today's world (Comprehension; 3.16).
The students are asked to observe and make comments about two designs; one with a center of interest and one without a center of interest.
The teacher will give step by step instructions (guided practice) for the students to follow as they draw the center of interest (the continent of Africa) and their pattern.

Low:A simplified…”connect the dots” African continent for the student to complete. All students will practice drawing the African continent using the letters “C”, “U” and “V”. Teacher and peer help and table partner assistance (cooperative groups). Homework: only identify and label three countries in Africa.
Average: Teacher assistance and peer help. Homework: only identify and label six countries in Africa.
High: The student must complete the entire center of interest design. Homework: identify and label ten countries in Africa.
1. Worksheets, tests, and practice sessions on the color wheel and the intermediate colors as well as center of interest worksheets.
2. The culminating activity: the African hat, the kufi.

We have completed an intermediate color landscape, now we will use those intermediate colors to create a pattern on our African hat, the kufi.
