Boro sweeps Pinelands in championship doubleheader

BY DOMINICK POLLIOTHE OCEAN STAR

TOMS RIVER — It took fivehours of baseball to crown achampion and after it was allsaid and done, the Point BoroPanthers earned the right tocall themselves champs.

Last Friday they sweptPinelands in two games 6-4and 3-0.

GAME ONEOut of the gate the Point

Boro legion team was fast tohome plate. Pinelands hadmanaged to secure two outsbut had put two Boro runnerson base. Mark Leyble cameup to bat and blasted a homerun far over the right fieldfence to give Boro momen-tum and a 3-0 lead.

“It felt really good. I’vebeen swinging a lot so it’snice that it finally paid off,”said Leyble. “I felt really re-laxed and smooth. It feltnice.”

Pinelands responded withtheir turn at bat in the bottomof the inning. After loadingthe bases they booted a sacri-

fice fly ball to center fieldthat scored one run. TimRossi then recorded his firststrikeout of the game and gotthe next batter to groundoutto Thomas Paul at short whostepped on second for thethird out.

In the bottom of the sec-ond Pinelands loaded thebases in similar fashion be-fore managing an RBIgroundout to second. ThePanther defense managed tokeep Pinelands down to one

run and closed out the inningwith a 3-2 lead.

The Panther bats reignitedin the third inning and tworunners were on base beforePinelands decided it wastime for a new pitcher. Sebas-tian Severio reached first ona Pinelands error to load thebases for Boro. Leyblestepped up to the dish andripped a two-run single todeep right field. Ryan Carnegrounded out for the last outof the inning but Boro had es-

tablished a solid three-runlead.

With solid defense fromboth teams and strong pitch-ing from Rossi on the rubber, the score remained 5-2 untilthe seventh and final inning.

The Panthers added an in-surance run in the top of theseventh. Ryan Sansone, whowas pinch running for Da-mon Del Priore, stole homeon a bad pitch fromPinelands to put Boro up 6-2before the end of their turn atbat.

In the bottom of the sev-enth and the last chance forPinelands, the Panthers gaveup two doubles to start put-ting Pinelands runners onsecond and third. Rossi thenstruck out the next batter be-fore getting the following hit-ter to groundout to short.Paul scooped up thegrounder and smartly threwto first for the second out asPinelands tacked on onemore run to their total.

The Panthers only neededone more out and Rossisealed the deal with a six-pitch strikeout from themound.

Both teams were given 30minutes to rest before jump-ing into the next game thatdetermined the Ocean Coun-ty tournament winner.

GAME TWOThe second game exhibit-

ed mostly defense and stellarpitching as the only threeruns scored belonged toPoint Boro and came one in-ning at a time.

This time the Pantherswere the home team andstarted the game on defense. Both defenses worked theirway out of bases-loaded situ-ations throughout the firstfour innings.

In the bottom of the firstFrank Graziano blasted atriple to center field and pa-tiently waited for his oppor-tunity to touch home.Pinelands’ pitcher secured astrikeout but then walkedtwo Boro batters to load thebases. Pinelands then workedout of the jam with anotherstrikeout and routine fly ballto center field.

Fast-forward to the fourthinning, the score was still tiedat zero and Boro found them-selves in a not so favorableposition. Pinelands hadloaded the bases on a walk, asingle and another walk.

But Josiah Gliddon, who al-ready tallied up five strike-outs, was not succumbing tothe pressure. He managed toget the next batter to fly outto center field and Graziano’sthrow back home after thecatch kept the runners rootedto their bags.

Gliddon then rocketed offthree straight strikes for thesecond out. On the next pitchwith the new batter Severio,Boro’s catcher, chucked theball to first and Mike Fal-conetti made the tag to pick

off the Pinelands runner andpreserve the shutout. In the bottom of the sameinning the Panthers loadedthe bases again. This timeLeyble was walked, Paul hit asingle to shallow center fieldand Carne hit a slow groundball to the grass line betweenthird and short for a single.Falconetti, Boro’s next bat-ter, battled his way to a 2-2count before connecting witha low pitch. He sent the ballhigh to center field for a sac-rifice fly that scored Leybleand put the Panthers up 1-0.In the following inningBoro tacked on another runthanks to leadoff hitterGraziano. This time he gotstarted with a double to rightfield and advanced to thirdon a ground out from BillFeehan. Pinelands securedanother out and Grazianowas hoping this time hewould make it home. With Severio back up inthe batter’s box, thePinelands pitcher unleasheda wild pitch that skirted pastthe catcher. Graziano turnedon the jets and slid headfirstinto home before the pitchercould make the tag. Pinelandseventually closed out the in-ning and Boro was holdingon to a 2-0 lead. The Panthers took care ofthe next three Pinelands’ bat-ters in the top of the sixthand went to work trying toextend their lead. Carneearned a walk to start the in-ning before Falconettipopped out to the catcher ona crazy play. The ball soaredstraight up into the air andboth the catcher and thehome plate umpire had noidea where it went. Hangtime was right around fourseconds before it came flyingback down and in the lastmoment Pinelands’ catchergot his glove under it for thecatch.Boro was not fazed by theout and Justin Rafi came upto bat for Kyle Lauria. Rafismacked an RBI double to

left field to give the Panthersone more run. Graziano thengrounded out and all Borohad left to do was keepPinelands from scoring in thetop of the seventh and finalinning.Pinelands opened the in-ning with a single and a walkand tension was mounting.Gliddon eased that feelingwith two straight strikeoutsand Boro could taste victory.Pinelands managed a singleon an error that loaded thebases to create a movie likescenario. But the script hadbeen written in Boro’s favorand Gliddon got the finalPinelands batter to fly out tocenter field where Grazianomade the routine play andthe Panther squad celebratedtheir championship.Severio had no doubts inhis mind that they would endup on top, saying, “We defi-nitely thought it was possible.Everyone’s positive on ourteam- we definitely thought itwas possible.”Rossi was happy they suc-ceeded working as a teamand was proud of the defensethat helped him out in thefirst game.“I just tried to bear downand I trusted in my defensethrowing strikes. As the American Legionbaseball season ended lastweek and the Point Borobaseball team crowded homeplate, trophy in hand andmedals around necks, I couldnot help but think that thiswon’t be the last time theplayers on the team find suc-cess.The Panther team that bat-

tled its way out of the loser’sbracket in the Ocean Countydouble elimination tourna-ment relies heavily on youngtalent with the leadership of ahandful of upperclassmen. But let’s not get confusedhere.Unlike many of the other

New Jersey American Legionteams, Point Boro, along withthe other Ocean Countyteams, do not play with anycollege freshmen on theirteams despite playing in theSenior League, which has anage rage that allows for fresh-man college players to partic-ipate during the summer.Instead, Boro utilizes the

summer league to developyoung talent and providesome more exposure forthose players hoping to playbaseball after high school. This means the team’s age

rage consisted of players en-tering high school to playersentering their senior year ofhigh school.I make a point to share this

information because a lot ofwhat I observed this summerseason are qualities of a sea-soned team full of veteran tal-ent and leadership. One strong example of this

came late in the season dur-ing the Ocean County doubleelimination tournament. ThePanthers, having earned theone-seed after winning theregular season, lost a gameduring the first week of tour-nament play. This droppedthem to the loser’s bracketwhere they would have towin out every game to make itback to the finals. This alsomeant they would have tobeat their finals opponenttwice in order to be crownedchampions.Well, you all know what

happened. Point Boro won onMonday. Then on Tuesday. And again on Wednesday toclaw their way into the finalsagainst Pinelands [Mystic Is-land Post 483].Since it was a double elimi-

nation tournament the Pan-thers had to defeat Pinelands

twice in order to be crownedtournament champions.Thursday’s rain moved the fi-nals to Friday night andBoro’s composure, determi-nation and skill made sure itwas a doubleheader. Theybeat Pinelands twice behindpitching efforts from TimRossi and Josiah Gliddon.Gliddon, who is going into hisjunior year, pitched a spectac-ular second game shut out, of-fering a glimpse of what is tocome for the next two highschool seasons. He is not the only player on

the field that has shown howgood the Panther players canbe.Kyle Lauria, also going into

his junior year of high schoolthis fall, has been a vacuum inthe second base position.Seemingly every ball that hasbeen hit his way this summerhas been scooped up for anout. Even if the ball does notmake its way over to a basefor an out, it still ends up infront of Lauria, which is criti-cal to keeping base runnersfrom grabbing extra bases.During the doubleheader

Mark Leyble, who representssome of the veteran talent, blasted a 3-run home run dur-

ing his first at bat and a twoRBI single during his secondat bat. The soon to be seniorhas made strong plays at thirdbase all season and is a stronglefty presence at the plate.Sebastian Severio, Boro’s

catcher, will also be a seniorthis fall and boasts one of thestrongest arms from behindthe plate. During the secondgame he even helped Gliddonout of a bases-loaded jam bypicking off a runner on first toend an inning. Severio will bea big part of Boro’s highschool season after leadinglast year’s team in on-basepercentage [.511] and RBIs[18].So, are you excited for

spring yet?The Panther squad has

what it takes and proved itthis summer. They also madetheir way to the American Le-gion state tournament. Al-though they lost, they heldtheir own against an always-strong Hamilton team thatdid not even know they wereplaying such a young squad. The other quality this team

holds is that of a calm, lighthearted composure. Evenwhen they are losing all theplayers are relaxed and never

stop playing their game. Theyalso have an impeccable tal-ent to get focused when itmatters most but they stilltake advantage of any downtime.Between games in the tour-

nament final, while Pinelandswas sitting in their dugout orthrowing the baseball around,a handful of Panther playerswere partaking in a casualgame of “baseball golf.” It wasentertaining to watch andthey were sharing laughs andsmiles that carried them allthe way to the winner’s circle.Whatever works, right?Well, the Point Boro base-

ball team has accomplished alot this summer and has evenmore to be excited about forthe future. Head coach DavidDrew has said multiple timeshow excited he is about whathe has seen play out on the di-amond this summer.Strong, young talent bol-

stered by quality senior lead-ership and the love of playingthe game might just be therecipe Boro needs for a stand-out baseball season nextspring.

Such was the case Mondaynight until Team Shore suf-fered their first loss of thenight during the third quarterwhen Mike Rotando injuredhis ankle while putting up a3-pointer.Prior to the injury Shore

was holding on to a two-point lead through the firstand second quarters. After four minutes of play

in the first quarter bothteams were starting to find arhythm. The score was tied 9-9 before Team Shore fell be-hind 22-16.The efforts of Brian Kenny

and a 3-pointer from Rotandohelped Shore tie the game upat 25. With 35 seconds left onthe clock Kevin Furlongnabbed a steal and took it thedistance to put Shore up 27-25at the end of the first quarter. The game remained close

throughout the second quar-ter with multiple leadchanges. Shore was holding a30-29 lead before Stern’sTrailers’ Neil Thompsonsunk two shots from thecharity stripe for a one-pointlead.Team Shore earned its way

to a 36-34 lead before KenOhen knotted the game againwith a short jumper. Furlonganswered for Shore with a 3-pointer- his first of two dur-ing the game.By the end of the first half

Team Shore established a 53-51 lead and showed no signsof fatigue despite only havingone sub to rotate in. Playingwith six players is somethingthe team has gotten used toas members of their teamparticipate in college work-outs.

The beginning of the thirdquarter saw the two teamstied once again, this time at56. Furlong drained anotherthree, followed by two madeStern’s Trailers shots to putShore behind one point.Tragedy struck at the 5:46

mark when Rotando put up athree from the corner whilereceiving contact from aStern’s Trailers player. A foulwas not called and Rotandowas on the hardwood grasp-ing his left leg as Stern’sTrailers went on offense. Af-ter the ball found its way outof bounds the injury timeoutcommenced.Eventually, Rotando’s left

foot was put in a boot and heused crutches to make hisway off the court for furtherevaluation. After a visit to thedoctor later in the week, theinjury was diagnosed as asprained ankle. This leftTeam Shore without any subsfor the rest of the game.Head coach Ralph Rotando

was not quick to place blameon the loss of subs though, saying, “Our guys can go.Mentally it does nothing tothem; it’s the battle on theboards. The job we were do-ing on the defensive back-board ultimately was the de-ciding factor.”Following the injury Team

Shore kept the game closeand even took a one-pointlead. But Stern’s Trailers’fresh legs prevailed and withless than three minutes to goin the third quarter they puttogether a 12-5 run to closeout the quarter up 78-68.Trouble continued for

Shore in the fourth and finalquarter where rebounds werefew and far between. Stern’sTrailers took advantage of thesituation, putting up 33 points

to Shore’s 27. Stern’s Trailerseventually claimed the 111-95victory and Team Shoreclosed out their summer sea-son.Roy Mabrey finished with

a game-high 34 points andRotando chipped in 14 beforehis injury. Neil Thompson ledStern’s Trailers with 27 pointswhile Deon Jones added 24.Coach Rotando was happy

to have Mabrey on the teamall season, saying, “He’s atremendous player. A guythat got missed on the Divi-sion I level. He’s a self-madeplayer and he works hardeveryday. He’s learned a lot-not only ways to score theball but he gets the ball out toeveryone else.”Team Shore finished with

an overall record of 3-8 butwas still a team that no onereally wanted to go upagainst. For Coach Rotandoand the rest of Team Shore, itwas never really about win-ning it all. It was about devel-oping quality basketball play-ers.“We play the game the

right way. We share the bas-ketball, we don’t care whoscores and we play defense,”Rotando stated. “On mostnights we outwork teams.”The 2015 Jersey Shore Bas-

ketball League championshipgame was played last nightbetween Stern’s Trailers andLarson Ford. Both teams fin-ished first in their respectivedivisions. Full coverage willbe available in the next issueof our sister paper, The CoastStar.

Josh Early had a 7 lb 9oz fluke. Ashley Bookholdtfrom Hamilton had a 6 lb 10oz fluke and earlier this weekAl Hilton had an 8 lb 8 ozfluke. We also saw a goodmix of fish weighed in for theJCAA tournament. The fishranged from 3 lbs to 7 lbs.The bluefish are also unpre-dictable. Last Saturday nightthe fish were taken in betternumbers but were small. Then another day the fishingsaw small numbers taken butlarge bluefish. ThomasMelito had a 19 lb 14 oz blue-fish on the Miss Belmar. Wedon't understand the swingsin this year’s fishing but hopethey change.
