    Colorado 7 th District

    Created after the 2000 census, the 7 th District is hotly contended political territory. Rep. Bob Beauprez, the incumbent

    Republican who won his first race in 2002 by a tiny margin, is departing this Denver-area seat to run for governor,providing Democrats an opportunity to continue their momentum in the state and pick up a House seat. Former state Sen.Ed Perlmutter recently won the primary and will face Rick ODonnell in one of the most closely-watched races in thecountry. The Cook Political Report ranks this race Toss-Up.

    The DistrictThe 7 th District includes much of Denvers fast-growing suburbs inAdams, Arapahoe, and Jeffersoncounties. It was drawn to be verycompetitive Beauprez won his firstrace by 121 votes in 2002, and Kerry

    very narrowly defeated Bush in thedistrict in 2004.

    About Ed PerlmutterEd Perlmutter represented JeffersonCounty in the state Senate from 1995 to2003 and served as the SenatesPresident Pro Tem. He is stressing stemcell research, government ethics,balanced budgets and renewable energy. He has also taken a strong stance on the Iraq War, endorsing Rep.     About Rick ODonnellODonnell has not been elected to office, although he served in Gov. Bill Owens cabinet. His web site cautiously avoidsmentioning President Bush and rarely uses the word Republican, hoping to establish a theme of reform and changedespite running to join the majority party in Congress. However, he takes the traditional Republican line on issues liketaxes, Social Security and immigration, and hes received campaign assistance from GOP establishment figures likePresident Bush, Vice President Cheney and Speaker Dennis Hastert. www.rickodonnell.com Fundraising and PollingAs the only candidate for the Republican nomination, ODonnell has been able to raise and stockpile money. He hasbrought in $1.7 million and retains $1.2 million on hand. Perlmutters campaign has raised an impressive $1.1 million, buthis tough primary fight left him with less than $300,000 on hand.

    An independent poll conducted by SurveyUSA has ODonnell and Perlmutter tied at 45%.
