About the Music
A Swedish Melody, Haunting and Sublime, is based on the folksong Ack, Värmeland, du sköna. The first line of the lyrics can be translated as, "Oh Värmeland, You Fair and Lovely Place". Värmeland is a province in the west central part of Sweden that shares a border with Norway. The lyrics of the song speak of the beauty of the landscape and the wonderful nature of the people that live there. Although the folksong is never presented without some alterations, an attempt is made to capture the attractiveness of the melody and at least some of the sentiments expressed in the lyrics. The piece is written with the most important melodies appearing in many different combinations of instruments. This allows everyone in the band to have a part that is important. It not only adds artistic variety, but also makes the music more fun to rehearse and perform. The genesis of this piece was inspired by Gary Garner, a very successful band director at West Texas A&M University for many years and who, even though retired, is still an active conductor and clinician. He expressed a need in the band literature for pieces with artistic value that are appropriate for intensive rehearsal and public performance, are easy enough for many bands to play, and give the ensemble a chance to work on intonation, balance, and phrasing. This requires a piece with changing scoring textures. A Swedish Melody was written in an attempt to help fill this need. To play it well, each section of the band will have to carefully tune, balance, and phrase with a variety of other sections in textures that are sometimes thick and sometimes thin.
About the Composer
Norman J. Nelson received a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the University of Texas at El Paso and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Music Composition from The University of Texas at Austin. He studied composition and music theory with Hunter Johnson, Kent Kennan, and Clifton Williams. He is now a Professor Emeritus of Music Theory and Composition at West Texas A & M University in Canyon, Texas where he taught and composed for thirty-six years. He has composed music for large and small instrumental and vocal ensembles and solos for various wind instruments and voice. He has also published compositions for music education purposes. Sight Reading for Band, volumes 1, 2, and 3, which he composed with B. G.Evans, is published by Southern Music Company.

Frederick J. Ricketts composed his famous marches under the pseudonym Alford. The march “On the Quarter Deck” was written in 1917 during the 1st World War and was written to commemorate the Battle of Jutland. The “quarter deck” is the raised deck behind the main mast of a sailing ship; traditionally it was where the captain commanded his vessel and where the ship’s colors were kept.

Credo is an ideal piece for young bands, particularly those with a large percussion section. It is very carefully scored and cross-cued, so that almost any size band can perform it. Composed in sonatina form, it is highly energetic and tuneful, and the bass instruments have lots of fun, easy things to play. Like Prairie Winds Festival, Credo is very safely scored, with Piccolo, 2nd Oboe, 2nd Bassoon, Contra-Alto Clarinet, 3rd Trombone and Double Bass parts optional. Ranges are very reasonable; the only sixteenth notes in the piece are in the snare drum.

"Pentland Hills" is among his most popular marches, which also include "Sterling Castle" and "Glasgow Fair", all published by Southern Music.

Mill City Sketches is an adventurous tone poem for wind band inspired by some of America's early entrepreneurs during the Industrial Revolution. It chronicles the bustling beginnings of the flour industry in Minneapolis, the catastrophic explosion of the Washburn A Flour Mill, the rebuilding period, and the final return to productivity. This rhapsodic work features soaring melodic lines, driving rhythms, and interesting parts for each instrument. The scoring is pleasantly open and transparent while maintaining plentiful doublings to ensure balance and secure playing across sections of the band.

Of this work, composer Yukiko Nishimura writes, "In Japan there is an old tale which has been told since before time began. Two of the most beautiful stars in the night sky are Altair, representing Man and Vega, representing Woman. These two lovers can meet each other only one time each year, on the night of July 7th. Living on opposite sides of the Milky Way, they have to ride a ship to meet each other on that night. If it rains, they cannot see each other because the river of light in the sky is swollen. In this edition, Keith Brion has taken his knowledge of Sousa band instrumentation history and arranged a modern version that accounts for the Sousa Band sound with contemporary instrumentation. Featuring a part for baseball bat, this piece offers a fun opportunity for the percussion section or for a guest musician/athlete to join the band.

"Dona nobis pacem" (Latin for "Grant us peace") is a phrase in the Agnus Dei section of the mass that has been appropriated for many musical works.
