    Install Internet Information Services 7.0 and Joomla 1.6by Using the Microsoft Web Platform Installer 3.0

    This article describes how to install and configure Joomla 1.6 on Windows Server 2008 R2

    by using the Microsoft Web Platform Installer (Web PI) version 3.0.

    The Web PI is a free tool that makes getting the latest components of the Microsoft WebPlatformincluding Internet Information Services (IIS), MySQL, the Microsoft .NETFramework, and Visual Web Developerquick and easy. The Web PI also lets you installweb applications such as Joomla by using the built-inWindows Web Appl Gallery.

    To install Joomla on IIS 7.0 by using the Web PI 3.0, follow these steps:

    Prerequisites

    Step 1. Install the Web Platform Installer 3.0

    Step 2. Select the products and applications to install

    Step 3. Review and configure the selected products and applications

    Step 4. Verify the installation and configuration

    Step 5. Configure search engine friendly URLs and enable caching

    Prerequisites

    The supported operating systems for the Web PI 3.0 are Windows 7, Windows VistaService Pack 1 (SP1), Windows Vista, Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and laterversions, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2003Service Pack 1 (SP1) and later versions.

    For this guide, it is assumed that you have Windows Server 2008 R2 installed on yourcomputer. You will also need an Internet connection and administrator privileges for yourcomputer.

    It is a good idea to confirm that your system meets the hardware requirements for IIS 7.0.Seehttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc268240.aspxfor more information.

    Step 1. Install the Web Platform Installer 3.0

    In this step, you begin to install the Web PI 3.0, which is a 1.3 MB download.

    1. Log on to Windows Server 2008 R2 as a user who has administrative privileges.2. Start Windows Internet Explorer.

    3. Go tohttp://www.microsoft.com/web/downloads/platform.aspx, and then clickDownload It Now.

    4. Click Run.

    5. Click Run again.

    6. Wait a few seconds for the Web PI to start.

    Step 2. Select the products and applications to install

    In this step, you select the version of Joomla that you want to install. Joomla 1.6 is used inthis guide.

    1. Next to Joomla! 1.6, click Add.Note: If Joomla! 1.6 is not in the items list, click Applications in the left navigation

    pane.

    2. Click Install.

    Step 3. Review and configure the selected products and applications

    In this step, you review and configure what you have added. Additionally, you add thedatabase, name the MySQL database, and name the Joomla 1.6 site.

    1. When you are asked which type of database you want to use, leave MySQLselected.Note: This will install MySQL 5.1 for Windows to handle all the databasetransactions that are required by Joomla.

    2. In the list, select Install it on my machine, and then click Continue.

    3. Scroll down to confirm that all the following have been automatically included asdependencies:

    o IIS 7.0

    o PHP 5.2.17o IIS URL Rewrite 2.0o Windows Cache Extension 1.1 for PHP 5.2o MySQL 5.1 for Windows

    Note: Windows Cache Extension is used to increase the speed of PHPapplications that are running on your web host. IIS URL Rewrite allows searchengine friendly URLs to be enabled for Joomla.

    4. Review the files to be downloaded and installed, as well as the license agreements,and then click I Accept.

    5. Specify a password for the MySQL administrator user name (root), and then clickContinue.

    Note: It is important to remember this password because you will be asked for this

    password in the steps that follow.

    6. Allow the Web PI installation to complete.7. In the Web Site box, leave Default Web Site selected.8. In the 'Joomla! 1.6' application name box, type a name for the Joomla 1.6 site, and

    then click Continue. For example, type myJoomla.

    9. Leave Create new database selected.10. Type the database administrator user name (root) and password.

    Note: This account is used to create and manage the database that is needed forJoomla.

    11. Type the database user name.Note: Joomla will use this account to access and write to the database as needed.

    12. Type the password for the database user name, and then scroll down.

    13. Leave the default database server name, localhost.14. The database name and database prefix can be used as is, or you can rename

    them.

    15. In the Load Sample Data list, select Yes or No to install Joomla sample data.Note: We recommend that you install the sample data and remove items as youcreate your data.

    16. Type the name of your Joomla website. For example, type myJoomla.

    17. In the Site Administrator box, type the Joomla site administrator user name. Forexample, type admin.

    18. In the Site Administrator Password box, type the Joomla site administratorpassword.

    19. In the Site Administrator Email box, type the email address that you want to use forthe Joomla site administrator, and then click Continue.

    20. Click Finish.

    21. Click Exit to close the Web PI 3.0.

    Step 4. Verify the installation and configuration

    In this step, you verify the installation and browse the Administration page.

    1. Switch to Internet Explorer.

    2. Go to your Joomla website. For example, go tohttp://localhost/myJoomla.3. Scoll to the bottom of the page, and then click Site Administrator.

    4. Log on by using the Joomla site administrator user name and password that youcreated in the previous step.

    5. Browse the Administration page.

    Step 5. Configure search engine friendly URLs and enable caching

    In this step, you verify that search engine friendly URLs were automatically enabled, andyou enable progressive caching for Joomla.

    1. On the Administration page, click the Global Configuration icon.

    2. Under SEO Settings, confirm that Search Engine Friendly URLs is set to Yes, andconfirm that Use URL rewriting is set to Yes.

    3. Under Global Configuration, click System.4. In the Cache list, select ON Conservative caching.5. In the Cache Handler list, select Windows Cache.

    6. Click Save & Close.

    7. Click View Site to go back to the default page, or begin managing your Joomla site.

    The installation is now complete, and you are ready to use Joomla!
