List of World War I aces credited with 20 ormore victories

Manfred von Richthofen, the most successful flying ace of World

War I wearing the Pour le Mrite, Prussia's highest military orderin this official portrait, c. 1917

See also: Flying ace,Aerial victory standards of WorldWar I, andAviation in World War I

The term ace (now commonly flying ace) was firstused by French newspapers duringWorld War I, describ-ingAdolphe Pgoudas l'as(the ace), after he downedfive German aircraft. When aircraft began to shoot orforce down other aircraft, systems to count air victorieswere subsequently developed. The American qualifica-tion of five victories eventually became the standard, eventhough other air services had previously used differingfigures.[1]

While ace status was most often won by fighter pilots, bomber and reconnaissance crews, and observers in two-seater aircraft such as theBristol F.2b (Bristol Fighter),

also destroyed enemy aircraft. If a two-seater aircraftdestroyed an aircraft, both crew members were creditedwith a victory. Because pilots usually teamed with differ-

    I

ing observer/gunners in two-seater aircraft, an observermight be an ace when his pilot was not, and vice versa.[2]

The few aces among combat aviators have historically ac-counted for the majority of air-to-air victories in military

    history.[3]

Loss of records by mischance and the passage of timecomplicates reconstructing the actual count for givenaces. The scores presented in the list cannot be definitive, but are based on itemized lists that are the best availablesources of information.[4] Aces are listed after verifyingthe date and location of combat, and the foe vanquished, for every victory accredited by an aviators home air ser-vice using their own aerial victory standards. Those victo-ries for which the evidence is unavailable or fragmentaryhave been excluded from the victory count.

    1. ^ Speculation about Bishops claims, particularly his2 June 1917 mission which earned him a VictoriaCross (VC), have persisted.[76]

    2. ^Although various claim-by-claim analyses ascribeDallas a score of 32 aircraft shot down,[77][78] he wasofficially credited with 39,[79][80] and his actual tallycould number in the 50s.[78]

    3. ^May be 31.[81]
