• In December 2008, the Osaka City Waterworks Bureau became the world's first public water service provider to gain ISO 22000, an internat-ional standard for food safety management.

• ISO 22000 uses a safety management approach called HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point).

• By controlling critical control points under the ISO management system and making continual improvements, food safety can be managed.

• Osaka City Waterworks Bureau supplies water purified by advanced water treatment to all areas of the city

• The Advanced Water Treatment System is a me-thod that combines conventional methods of wa-ter treatment with ozone and granular activated carbon treatments.

• This removes musty odors as well as trihalome-thanes, substances generated during the chlo-rination process, to provide safer and higher-quality water.

• This method completely eliminates musty odors, considerably reduces trihalomethanes, and im-proves safety from diseases caused by micro-organisms such as cryptosporidium, to enhance overall city water quality.

• Osaka’s water is treated by state-of-the-art wa-ter treat-ment system. It is about its efforts for safe and tasty tap water supply.

• Tap water is stored in aluminum containers for use as emergency water that can be supplied at the time of a disaster, as well as sold to the ge-neral public.

• Every nation is faced with the same issue of de-teriorating water quality that comes with urban development.

• Osaka Prefecture’s 3 water treatment facilities source its water from Yodogawa River, which in turn sources 70% of its water from Lake Biwa and 30% from Kizugawa River from Mie Prefec-ture & Katsuragawa River from Kyoto Prefecture.

• Osaka’s water problem came under focus in the early 1970’s, when many people were concerned that Osaka’s water smelt musty.

Water Quality Inspection System Is ISO Certified

• Osaka Prefectural Gov embarked on the na-tion’s first project to develop a new water treatment tech in 1982.

• In 1998, the prefecture succeeded in deliver-ing high-quality treated water from all its 3 water treatment facilities.

• The revolutionary technologies were ozone treatment & granular act carbon treatment.

• In addition to the systems of coagulo-sediment-ation and rapid sand filters, ozone treatment decomposes org matter in water, which is the cause of the musty smell of the water.

• Ozone treatment is also expected to provide a strong disinfectant effect.

• Each of the wtr treatment facilities has a rigo-rous wtr quality inspection syst that has been ISO17025 certified to ensure safety.

• The unique inspection methods are the carp sen-sor & the organic sensor that monitor source wtr sent from Yodogawa River to the treatment faci-lities for 24 hours.

• The carp sensor involves carps habit of swimming downstream at the sensor point when water qu-ality changes.

• The org sensor continuously & automatically measures the level of org matter in the water.

Water Taps Are Safe & Tasty Potable Wtr.

• As a result of these treatments, Osaka’s wtr has satisfied most of the requirements of tasty wtr compiled by the ‘Tasty Wtr Study Group’ of the Ministry of Health, Labour & Welfare.

• It was evaluated to be ‘comparable to marketed bottled mineral wtr’ by prefectural residents who were asked to compare the taste of wtr from different sources.”

• The prefecture’s wtr treatment syst is receiving much attention from the rest of the world, and nations including Korea have sent their person-nel for training every year.

• In Osaka, any wtr (toilet or bathroom), is clean & supplied by hitech treatment.

• Its hoped that every visitor to Osaka will enjoy drinking the safe and tasty tap wtr.

Recycle of sewage sludge• Recently, Osaka city has started the new

project which utilizes the sewage sludge as an energy resource. This figure shows effective energy recovery in a sewage treatment plant.

• Firstly, electric power is generated using the digestion gas from the sewage treatment process and the generated power is used for sewage treatment.

• Furthermore, the heat from the power generat-ion process is used in order to promote digestion gas generation. Therefore, effective use of the sewage sludge leads to effective treatment system which reduces the sewage treatment cost and CO2 emission at the same time.
