Participation Awards were awarded to: Marilyn Dutra & Debbie Headrick for 35 years. Janet Gushue and Richard Madayag for 30 years.

Brackets and Sidepots continue to be a drawing card for the bowlers with thanks to Stacy and Tahnee at Coun-try Club Bowl. The State 500 Club runs their tournament during the Team times for those State 500 Club members.

You haven’t bowled yet and still want to do so? May 26-28, Memorial weekend, there are still squad times available. June 2-4 is totally full. No bowling on June 9-11, State Convention in Visalia. June edition. The magazine prints up to 5,000 paper edi-tions a month and also emails a few thousand digital ver-sions of the publication to bowling centers and pro shops around the U.S. and abroad.

Most bowling publications have seen better days. The Stars & Strikes is just another on a long list.

“In the old days, we had a lot of pages, anywhere be-tween 40 and 50,” Goodwin says. “It’s dwindled to 12 and 16 in recent years.”

Goodwin has more than a lifetime experience in the bowling industry. For four years, he and C.J. owned a 26-lane bowling center in Dallas called Circle Bowl, and he has managed several centers.

He also has been an accomplished bowler, starting at age 8, a Professional Bowlers Assn. member for many years “averaging over 200 for more than 30 years,” which he says is “no big deal” these days.

Goodwin, with C.J. at his side, also spent 20 years working with the Professional Women’s Bowling Assn., mostly overseeing its regional program, and they were media directors for Pinnacle Events, owners of the Las Vegas-based Mini Eliminator Tournaments and The Gen-erations Pro Bowlers Tour.

In 2011, he received the Mike Hennessy Bowling Writ-ers Assn. of America Award of Merit. The award honors “sportswriters who have contributed to the betterment of bowling by educating the public both general and sports specific of the accomplishments of those involved in the game as well as offering thoughtful and provocative com-mentary on issues that affect the direction and future of bowling.”

He wrote for the Bowlers Journal magazine for more than a decade and is currently one of the featured writers for the monthly International Bowling Industry magazine, which is based in Southern California.

Goodwin was a longtime member of the board of di-rectors of the BWAA (now International Bowling Media Assn.) in addition to serving as the group’s president. He is now an IBMA life member and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2016.

Through it all, he and his wife have kept the Stars & Strikes going – he credits C.J. with doing the hard work that has made it last so long. He concedes that they would be open to selling the paper to the right person.

“If some young person wanted to buy it, they could get it for a song,” he said. “But I don’t know if there is anyone who would want to operate it as a labor of love the way we and many other papers have. We would love to find someone that could keep it going and find a way to take advantage of the new media tools available to make it a viable business again.”

Whatever happens with Stars & Strikes, the Goodwin’s say they have enjoyed the ride. “We’re just going to take it wherever it goes. No matter what happens, it’s been a lot of fun doing it,” he says.

five full seasons were two runner-up finishes which came in 2013 and 2015.“What makes it special is you want to beat the best and Parker is one of the best,” said

the 55-year-old Goebel. “It’s a huge relief to finally get that first win and to beat a great player like Parker in a major, that makes it that much more satisfying.”

For Goebel, the Miller Lite Players Championship win was his second major title on the national stage. He won the PBA Tour’s PBA Tournament of Champions in 1998.

As the No. 2 qualifier for the finals, Goebel advanced to the title match by beating PBA50 Tour rookie Michael Haugen Jr. of Phoenix, 200-181, in the semifinal match. Haugen, a five-time PBA Tour winner who qualified fourth for the finals, was making his third championship round appearance of the season and tied his best finish of third.

In the opening match Haugen beat No. 5 qualifier Scott Greiner of Platte City, Mo., 238-159, and then defeated No. 3 qualifier Bob Learn Jr. of Erie, Pa., 222-190, to advance to the semi-final match against Goebel.

Learn, who dominated qualifying by averaging 245, was trying for his fourth career PBA50 Tour title while Greiner was trying for his first win.

BURBANK — A huge shout out to Ariel Rodriguez for rolling a 300 in the Wed. Night Hdcp league! Way to go, Ariel!

I was fortunate enough to spend this past Sunday after-noon bowling in the NLAC Adult/Youth Double Champion-ships Tournament at Harley’s Simi Bowl. All of us old timers, and I use that term very loosely, had better keep a handle on our best game. These youth bowlers are amazing! If we’re lucky, they will bowl collegiate before attacking us on the league lanes. Pickwick youth was represented and we have some serious up and comers! I encourage everyone to get out and watch these avid bowlers when you have the opportunity.Senior Swingers: (scr) Dick Bay 180, Cres Cruz 165, Winston Gorriceta 453, Josie Pemberton 422. DOWNEY — It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough as Threadworks moved into 1st place in Round 5 by sweep-ing past The Professional Approach 5-0. The US Open pat-tern was playing especially tough tonight as most teams struggled. Paul Varela led the charge to the top, as he fired a very nice 604 series to lead the sweep. Danny Ly led Power House Video Games to a sweep of their own, as they took down Blizz Yogurt 5-0. Danny shot 625, while Greg Neuer led Blizz with 581. Team DV8 is once again in contention for the round lead, as Sam Hitchcock winged his way to 242/623 and led DV8 to a 4-1 win over Linder Insurance.

Linder was paced by Kurt Arakaki 592 and Kevin Val-monte 591. In the best scoring match of the night, Pino’s Pizza prevailed 3-2 as they held off Alhambra Coin Center to win Team Totals by 13. Both teams bowled well, finishing as #1 and #2 scoring teams for the night, and their pair was 250 pins higher than any other two teams combined scoring for a pair. Leading the way for Pino’s was Ramon Torres 627 & Leonard Ruiz 600, while Alhambra was led by Doug Kempt 660 & Steve Gaucin 608. Herzog Insurance took a 4-1 win over the PJ-less Los Altos Trophies team as Mikey Villarreal shot 625 for the winners, while Top Dog for the night went to Los Altos’ Buddy Lucas with a very fine 670.

In the roll off team matches, it was Erickson Foods once again losing the first two games, only to come back strong in Game 3 and not only win the game, but Team Totals. Er-ickson pulls within 2.5 games of holding the #1 seed with the 3-2 win, as nobody managed to shoot 600 series, Herbert

Jones led the way for Keystone Lanes with 589, while Jason Buenviaje shot 563 for Ericksons. Charlie Kinstler shot 614 to lead SYSCO to a 5-0 sweep of Forest Lanes who strug-gled all night to catch SYSCO. Mason Man O’Lantern Sher-man topped Forest with 589. American Harvest Vodka out shot CASAMIGO’S Tequila and won 4-1 as Kevin Jones rolled 588, while Vernon Adams topped the Tequila team with 565. Mike Jennings shot 594 to lead Tifco Industries to a 4-1 win over BOWLIUM, who had the pair’s high series, Craig Stevens with 623. Matt Mosley powered his way to 255 & 638 to lead Cook’s Bowling Supply to a 5-0 sweep over J.A.T. DeeRonn Booker led the Junior Amateur Tour team with 549. In the final pairing, it was GJC Services win-ning 3 points as Juan Zavala topped his squad with 511.

Sidepot winners were Game 1 – Sam Hitchcock 242 Game 2 –Jason Buenviaje 226 however the Financial Advi-sor’s pot was won by Buddy Lucas 225 for $240 with Leon-ard Ruiz Jr. 2nd place with 223 for $100. Game 3 Super Pot went to Mikey Villarreal 255, quite the contrast from last week where you needed 11 strikes or more to win. The TRUE ANCHOR award goes to a new winner, Barry Couch Jr. collected the honors with a 3 game set of 361.

One more week on the dreaded US Open shot to try and move into the Round Lead, improve your standing, or move up the ladder in the Roll Off seedings. I’m sure most can’t wait for May to get here, since we will be finished with this pattern. Hope to see you all down at Del Rio next Monday in Downey. Have a blessed week everyone!

    DEL RIO LANES - 7502 E. Florence Ave., Downey CA 90240 - (562)927-3351

DOWNEY — The Brunswick Invitational wound up the regular season with a final shot on the long flat pattern with a wild card spot at stake and other teams solidifying their overall positions for their envelopes next week.

In the one important match of the night, Cal Bowl needed one point to lock up the last playoff spot facing Linder’s Insurance. Cal Bowl snuck out a first game win and locked up their roll off position. Cal Bowl will face 5th seed Bowlium in the first match on the Round 1 House shot.

Keystone Lanes locked up the overall #1 seed for the roll-offs with a 1-4 decision against Sysco who needed the sweep. Eddie VanDaniker’s 265 second game helped lift Keystone to the big one win. Key-stone will sit and wait for the Championship Match while Sysco will meet the winner of Sunday morning’s quarterfinal match.

Other high scores included Ramiro Garcia 657, Ramiro Garcia 657, Paul Varela 644, Buddy Lucas 638, Mike Mellick 637, Ralphie Ramirez 635, Dean Anderson 623, Chris Hefner 603, Steve Brode 594, Ed-die VanDaniker 593, and Dave Schiada 592.

Sidepots went to Paul Varela (235) and Ralphie Ramirez (246) for $75 each while the second game Super Pot went to Eddie VanDaniker (265) for $225. Financial Advisor’s third game pot went to Ralphie

Ramirez (246) for $200 with second to Chris Hefner (244) for $100. Jon Huff won $490 in the Clean-30-Must-Go pot by posting a whopping 11 clean frames. Brandon Grant bounced back after a rough start for three strikes when it counted to take $1000 of the Strikeout Pot with the rest carrying over to next week’s sweepers.

Next week’s sweeper will feature one game on each round condition. The 10 teams in the top half of the league will bowl on one side and the bottom 10 will bowl on the other. Each game the groups will switch sides of the house and the left lane teams will move one pair left and the right lane teams will move one pair to the right. (Bowl 2 games on each side crossing with 4 different teams). The order of the games will be: Game 1 – 4th Round Nationals, Game 2 – 3rd Round 46’ Long, Game 3 – 1st Round House Shot and Game 4 – 2nd Round 26’ Short. Practice will start promply at 7:20 so be on time! Financial Advisor’s Super Pot $$ will be divided 4-ways as will the Strikeout Pot bal-ance so everyone has a chance at a piece each game. Those of you who were not here to put in your dou-bles, pots and brackets this week MUST BE EARLY next week- everything will close when the lights come on for practice. Come out next week (early start time 7:20) and watch everyone bowl on every condition and take a shot at the big money on the line for sweepers!
