There are big bugs, little bugs, tumble bugs, straddle bugs, bed bugs, hum bugs and bug-bears. But you needn't scratch about much to find a n y of these; for they are everywhere, thicker than skippers in a three- year old cheese. To find .the bug you so earnestly desire, requires dilligent scratching; and if by so doing you don't happen to catch it, you can comfort yourself with the reflection that you put in tbe licks for it, and it ought to nave been yours. Ii a young man takes a girl around to fee the shows, feeds her with tit bits, and buys "ber pretty calicoes, his title to a kiss is undisputable for "where the ben scratches,' there she expects to find a bug." , The bug that you are all after, my brethren, IB the go'd bog, but lack a day, how many of you scratch in vain 1 yet it is found in manure he'ps as well as in auriferous places. The farmer !urns it up with his plow, and the gardener with bis spade ; and yet, thousands keep scratching here and there without finding any bug. A few months ago, hundreds of you fell to scratching Fraser Biyer, expecting to find a mighty big bug. Well, you scratched, and scratched, and—scratched; and what did von .turn out at last ?—a monstrous humbug ! You ;got fiightened and scrabbled for borne a vast sight more buggy than you went^—for "Where the hen scratches, there' she expects to find a bug." You all have about an equal amount of hope, if not pluck, and each one 'will probably pitch i > and dig with all "the energy of a teriier at a gopher hole—for '{where the ben scratches, there sbe expects to find a bug." Let. me make another application of tbe text, my brethren. Beware ot an oily tongued, syco- phantic friend—who is ever ready to do a small favor—who professes a willingness to serve you at all times—who praises you as the fox did the crow ; for while be is thus "squizzin'g" himself into your good graces, he bas an eye on your purse—yourself forgetting for the moment that "Where the hen scratches, there she expects to find a bug." My friends, now uneasy is the immortal mind in its pent up prison of clayf How it seems to ekalt in its freedom whila winging its way to yon azure field of light and glory, or wandering amid the green old bowers of'the past where, none .but itself is permitted to roam. He entered his shop, andl sooo tound that I was tbefitat object of interest. - Af- ter hastily drying me by the hre, in which prog- ress I narrowly escaped conflagration, he ran over me and fixed his eyes upon sales at auction, ad- vertisements &c. I was then niore particularly examined and dismissed with condemnation.— Nothing but foreign news, congress and cabinet —live stories and'accidents by flood and '•field"; a newspaper-should be devoted to prices current (was then-pettishly thrown qppn tlie-pounter, but ^as' soon in requisition. A bare;beaded boy made his appearance, with a "please* to lend ma your paper a few minutes,-just fo look at the Bhip ueWB f" The request was reluctantly granted, with something about the plaguq of paper bor- rowing and a determination to stop it, I .was soon borne to a neighboring house. Tbe good old woman whose husband was at sea, eagerly sought the ship news,, but was disap- pointed in her search. 'How negligent and care- less these printers are,' paid she,'uota word of in- telligence of the-Wind Bird.-th-y print of-Holland and poetry and fill their paper with advertise, meets, aud that is all they-care about.' Miss now took her turu. She sought the stories, tbe poe-' try and marriages, which in half an hotjr were all devoured, with tbe 'wooder they pot anything else in.' An; elderly lady now took me, who adjusting ber-spectacles, surveyed me a little while, and declared mq a 'terribly uninteresting paper ; hardly a column of deaths, and not more thaq hiteeu or twenty murders and accideuts.'— In bltis w a j I passed through all the hands of the lamiiy, and alter being well soiled and somewhat torq, by the little ones, I was .sent home. For three whole days I had no rest, but was continu ally: borrowed and abused. At, ihe end of this period I was supplanted by a. nqwr face, and was then discarded aud thrown aside like all servants whqn they have become useless. J was, howev- er, again resuscitated, and employed.*)8 A wrap- per to some merchandize, and sent into the country.' There again I became an Object of in- terest, went the rounds of the neighborhod, and was a nine days wonder.' ^i anr -now quietly hanging up in a shattered condition, in afarmeteii kitohen,.from which I have written this memoir. Expectation is one-thing, you know, my frieniis and finding another. T o u may turn over many a s tone in this precious world, and find n o -!bug

, after all. . fhrenplpgicaUy speaking , the., humau head is.on'e .yast bump ofUexpectation. a n d n o t h ing e lse . v*

There are various sorts e f bugs , gentlemen, in this buggy sphere . There are b ig bugs, little bugs, tumble bugs , straddle bugs, bed bugs, hum bugs and bug-bears. But you needn't scratch about much to find any of t h e s e ; for they are everywhere, thicker than skippers in a three-year old cheese .

To find .the bug y o u s o earnestly desire, requires dilligent scratch ing; and i f by so doing you don't happen to catch it, you can comfort yourself with the reflection that you put in tbe licks for it, and it ought to nave been yours. I i a y o u n g man takes a girl around to fee the shows, feeds her with tit bits, and buys "ber pretty cal icoes, his title to a kiss is undisputable — for "where the ben scra tches , ' there s h e expects t o find a bug." , The bug that you are all after, my brethren, IB the go'd b o g , but lack a day, how many of you scratch in vain 1 ye t it is found in manure h e ' p s as well as in auriferous places. The farmer !urns it up with his plow, and the gardener with bis spade ; and yet , thousands keep scratching here and there without finding any bug.

A few months ago, hundreds of y o u fell to scratching Fraser B i y e r , expect ing to find a mighty b ig bug. Wel l , you scratched, and scratched, and—scratched; and what did von

.turn out at last ?—a monstrous humbug ! You ;got f i ightened and scrabbled for borne a vast s ight more buggy than you went^—for " W h e r e the hen scratches, there' she expects to find a bug."

You all h a v e about an equal amount of hope, if not pluck, and each one 'will probably pitch i > and dig with all "the energy of a teriier at a gopher hole—for '{where the ben scratches, there sbe expects t o find a b u g . "

Let. m e make another application of tbe text, my brethren. Beware ot an oily tongued, sycophantic friend—who is ever ready to do a small favor—who professes a willingness to serve you at all t imes—who praises you as the fox did the crow ; for while be is thus "squizzin'g" himself into your good graces, he bas an eye on your purse—yourself forgetting for the moment that "Where the hen scratches, there she expects to find a bug ."

My friends, now uneasy i s the immortal mind in i t s pent u p prison of c layf How it seems to ekalt in its freedom whila winging its way to yon azure field of light and glory, or wandering amid the green old bowers of'the past where, none

.but itself is permitted to roam. ' W h a t then most be its de l ights , when forever

released irooi iUj thraldom p f flesh, and no longer dependant upon bread, beef, and potatoes f 'i'ne day will c o m e w t i e n liberty, such o i mortals have n^ver y e t k n o w n , Will be blissfully realized1 in-the eternal sphere , w h e r e — w h e r e — " W h e r e the l ien scratches, there she expec t s to find a bug," So mote it b e !

H e entered his shop, a n d l sooo tound that I was tbe fit at object of interest. - After hastily drying me by the hre, in which progress I narrowly escaped conflagration, he ran over me and fixed his eyes upon sales at auction, advertisements &c. I was then niore particularly examined and dismissed with condemnation.— Nothing but foreign news , congress and cabinet — l i v e stories and'accidents by flood and '•field"; a newspaper-should be devoted to prices current ( w a s then-pettishly thrown qppn tlie-pounter, but ^as' soon in requisition. A bare;beaded boy made his appearance, with a "please* to lend ma your paper a few minutes,-just fo look a t t h e Bhip ueWB f" The request was reluctantly granted, with something about the plaguq o f paper borrowing and a determination to stop it, I .was soon borne to a neighboring house .

Tbe good old woman whose husband was at sea, eagerly sought the ship news,, but was disappointed in her search. 'How negligent and careless these printers are,' paid she , 'uota word of intelligence of the-Wind Bird.-th-y print of-Holland and poetry and fill their paper with advertise, meets , aud that is all they-care about.' Miss now took her turu. She sought the stories, tbe poe- ' try and marriages, which in half an hotjr were all devoured, with tbe 'wooder they pot anything else in . ' A n ; elderly lady n o w took me, who adjusting ber-spectacles, surveyed me a little while, and declared mq a 'terribly uninteresting paper ; hardly a column o f deaths, and n o t more thaq hiteeu or twenty murders and accideuts . '— In bltis w a j I passed through all the hands of the lamiiy, and alter being well soiled and somewhat torq, by the little ones , I was . s e n t home. For three whole days I had n o rest, but was continu ally: borrowed and abused. At, ihe end of t h i s period I was supplanted by a. nqwr face, and was then discarded aud thrown aside like all servants whqn they have become useless. J was, however, again resuscitated, and employed.*)8 A wrapper to some merchandize, and sent into the country. ' There again I became an Object of interest, went the rounds of the neighborhod, and was a nine days wonder. ' i anr -now quietly hanging up in a shattered condition, in afarmeteii kitohen,.from which I h a v e written t h i s memoir.
