THE IRISH ECHO TOP 40 UNDER 40 2020 Kathleen Sullivan Where you live: Buffalo NY Place of Birth: Buffalo NY Age: 39 Status: Married Family: I’m the daughter of the late William “Homer” and Elizabeth (Stack) Lewis and have three younger siblings: Mary Claire, Liz, and Billy. My husband, John, is a Buffalo Police Officer and we have two children, Grace (9) and Liam (7). First Job: Summer Youth in the Parks Dept. What it taught me: Show up with a positive attitude and don’t be afraid to take initiative. Even though cleaning the bathrooms wasn’t glamorous, putting some freshly picked flowers in them could brighten someone else’s day. Current Company and position: Executive Sales Representative with Lilly USA Best advice you could give someone starting out: Build relationships and your brand. Connecting with people is such a simple skill that often gets ignored. When it’s done with genuine intent, it can set you apart and help you build valuable relationships that can be beneficial in your current environment or future opportunities. Additionally, be conscious of your brand. Know who you are and what you want to be known for. Know what makes you stand out and continue to improve upon those skills. Three things people would be surprised to know about me.... 1. I’m a Buffalo Bills season ticket holder and try to get to an away game each year. 2. I love crafting and have started a fun side hustle. 3. While growing up, we were lucky enough to host two children through the Belfast Summer Relief Program whom we still consider. How do you celebrate your Irish heritage? Growing up in an Irish family in South Buffalo, we were introduced to our heritage at a young age. My parents enrolled me in Irish Dancing when I was 4 (and my sisters followed). This experience not only left me with some of my fondest friendships and memories, but it started a life-long love and appreciation for the rich history, traditions, and music of Ireland. Now, my daughter is carrying on this tradition as an Irish Dancer with Rince Na Tiarna. She has even started performing Irish songs in competition and with my brother’s Irish band, Crikwater. Currently, I’m one of the organizers of the Annual South Buffalo Irish Festival, which is a free festival dedicated to celebrating and sharing our rich heritage. You should all come check it out! Kathleen is an Executive Sales Representative with Lilly USA in the Diabetes Business Unit. She also volunteers her time as the President of Can You Dig It, Inc, a non- profit organization dedicated to the promotion of Irish culture and heritage associated with South Buffalo and the promotion and maintenance of public spaces that help define that community. Kathleen and the other dedicated individuals on the committee organize and run the South Buffalo Irish Festival which has become one of the paramount local traditions. This annual festival is one of the largest free music festivals in WNY and focuses its attention on sharing Irish music and culture with thousands each year. In order to keep this event free and share it with the masses, it requires countless hours. But because of Kathleen’s pride in her Irish heritage and the deep Irish roots of her community, she is focused on continuing this tradition. Can You Dig It, Inc not only runs this festival but is involved throughout the year giving back to the community and its people promoting continuous improvement and growth. In addition to Can You Dig It, Inc, you will often see Kathleen involved in her community and school community. As a former college runner, she enjoys coaching the 5-8th grade boys and girls cross country team at her children's school, Notre Dame Academy, and also co-organize the league. Kathleen graduated from Ithaca College in 2002 with a BS in Television-Radio and minors in Sports Studies and Politics. Although she has had jobs in all three areas, she has been in pharmaceutical sales for 15 years.
