Chris Palmer FRPS EFIAP DPAGB APAGB
Chris has been actively involved in club photography since 1979, and confesses to being a “photo-holic”. A busy national PAGB judge and popular Fotospeed sponsored lecturer, Chris has visited more than 190 different camera clubs, and judged many regional, national and international exhibitions. He recently gained his Fellowship of the Royal Photographic
Society, serves on the Licentiateship panel, and provides advice at distinction workshops.
He holds a Distinction of the PAGB and has received an APAGB award for his services to photography. Chris has had success and gained
awards in international exhibitions, and has recently gained his EFIAP distinction.
Chris is a member of Amersham Photographic Society, and supports two workshop ventures – Photo Knowledge, and Spirit & Vision Landscape Photographic Workshops. chrispalmerphotography.co.uk
Kevin Adlard FRPS EFIAP
Kevin’s interest in photography began when he was 14 years of age. He acknowledges that he is a self-taught photographer, and did his own printing in both black and white and colour. With the advent of digital photography he now uses a Leica M and Nikon camera but still prefers a manual focus Leica.
Kevin loves all types of photography but his passion is Travel/Creative/Contemporary and Reportage, in both black and white and colour. Most, but not all of his photography has been taken abroad in Cuba, Georgia, Russia, Turkey and various Arab countries.
He is always looking for new techniques and styles, and to create powerful
black and white portraits. He gained an ARPS in the late 1990’s and an FRPS in 2000 and also holds an EFIAP.
Kevin is a holder of numerous awards including two Royal Photographic Society Gold medals, London Salon medals and many other international awards. He is a member of the Visual Arts Panel of the Royal Photographic Society.www.kevinadlard.co.uk
Ross McKelvey, MPAGB EFIAP FIPF ARPS BPE4*
Ross has been involved with Club Photography in Northern Ireland for 10 years. He only started entering National and
SELECTORS’ BIOGRAPHIES AND COMMENTS
International Exhibitions after achieving the DPAGB in November 2011, but quickly established himself and his work on the bigger stage. Many awards later, he became Northern Ireland’s first MPAGB for 17 years in April 2013, and is earnestly
trying to encourage fellow Northern Irish photographers to follow in his footsteps, particularly through Catchlight Camera Club, which he founded in September 2012.
Although a self-confessed ‘gear-junkie’ Ross believes that true photography is all about the ‘Prints’ - no matter about the equipment. A popular Club speaker and Judge in the whole of Ireland, Ross is extremely proud to be part of the judging team at Edinburgh 2014. www.rossmckelvey.com
Selectors’ Comments
To be invited to judge the prestigious Edinburgh International is an honour and a privilege, but it is also a significant responsibility too. My fellow judges Kevin Adlard, Ross McKelvey and I enjoyed the task immensely, aided by the efficient organisation and superb hospitality extended to us over the selection weekend.
We three agreed that it was important to make our selection mindful of the need to provide variety, acknowledge creativity, but to also maintain quality. The task of reducing the very large entry to the 202 prints that comprise the 2014 exhibition caused much angst and tricky decision making, and the allocation of awards was even harder! Some
potentially good images had not been fully realised in the printing, some had been over enlarged, or inappropriately processed and manipulated. I was particularly drawn to a very small print that has been accepted which very capably shows that the best image size is not necessarily A3.
We extend our grateful thanks to all the entrants for submitting their work for our perusal, our congratulations to those who gained success, and to those members of Edinburgh Photographic Society who made the whole event possible.
Chris Palmer, Kevin Adlard and Ross McKelvey
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The Edinburgh Photographic Society was founded in 1861. Our roots were in the Photographic Society of Scotland (PSS) which, in 1856 when only 9 months old, held its first exhibition with 1050 prints and 8000 visitors. Following a dispute over the PSS’s refusal to accept a particular print in the 1857 Exhibition, several PSS Members resigned from the society and began to meet privately. They went on to found the Edinburgh Photographic Society in 1861 and it held its first exhibition in the same year when only 6 weeks old. On the other hand the PSS went into decline from that point on and by 1873 had gone.
EPS, as it is popularly known, is therefore one of the oldest and most highly regarded photographic societies in the UK, if not the world. This exhibition is now in its 152nd year, almost as long as the Society’s 153 years. We have our headquarters in this magnificent Georgian building in Edinburgh’s New Town, and currently have about 210 members, making us the largest photographic society in Scotland. Over four floors of this fine building we have a large meeting room (which doubles as the gallery for this exhibition), a well-equipped studio, a small permanent gallery, library and a large darkroom (for both colour and black and white). Regular meetings are held on Wednesday nights when there are lectures and competition evenings.
The Society also has a number of ancillary groups, which meet on other nights – the Creative Digital Group, the Nature Group, the Studio and Portraiture Group, the Delos Group (which organises outings) and the Phoenix Group, which helps members with salon work and preparation for distinctions. Beginners are well served with many evenings devoted to photographic skills, composition, presentation etc.
If you live within reach of Edinburgh, you are very welcome to join us - we cater for all levels of photographer from complete beginners to the most advanced workers. Come to our Open Evening on Wednesday 24th September at 7.30 pm when all the facilities will be on view and the various groups will demonstrate what they offer.
The Society’s website is at www.edinburghphotographicsociety.co.uk, and one of our members, Peter Stubbs FRPS, has his own very extensive and informative website at www.edinphoto.org.uk which has a wealth of information about the history of photography in Edinburgh. Both are worth a look.

FIAP Gold Medals
Kevin Adlard - Wash Day by Jean BurhouseI love the colour harmony throughout the image. It is nicely printed and I engage with the contemporary style of the image. Ross McKelvey - Boy Blue by Clare AcfordThe square composition really works here. There is beautiful depth to the print, with eye-catching colours. Well done - a very striking image.Chris Palmer - Soft Touch by Diana JayesI loved this print immediately! The soft, gentle tonality and sensitivity enhance the femininity of the model. Lovely observation and absolutely beautiful.
RPS Gold Medals
Kevin Adlard - Minimalism by Susan BrownI like the simplicity of the image and the delicate tones throughout. The square format works well with good balance.Ross McKelvey - Into the Light by Lynne MorrisI love the surrealist style, and this high contrast mono print really jumped out at me from first viewing. The composition and content come together to make a fabulous, memorable print.Chris Palmer - Storm Chasing by Les ForresterThe mood and feeling of this seascape, and the relationship of the sky to the sea work so well within the square format. Lovely!
The Edinburgh Medal
"Edinburgh PS members were very successful in the Exhibition this Year, but the Judges chose "Price of Progress" by Neil Scott as the winner of the Edinburgh Medal. We agreed that the image was attention grabbing, and thought provoking - two elements that helped make it such a powerful contemporary image, and the deserving winner."
