GAMES 1-4: TEXAS CLASSIC - TEXAS, COLORADO STATE, INCARNATE WORD GAME NOTES

BALLPARK FIGURES - RECAPPING 2017 The Badgers begin their season on Feb. 9 at the Texas Classic and will play in five tournaments before

returning to Goodman Diamond to open up Big Ten Conference play. Throughout the spring UW will face 13 2017 NCAA Tournament teams, including six in one weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, California.

In the beginning of the season, the coaches hope to find their dynamite lineup by mixing in the newer Badgers with the veterans to help them gain experience and confidence in their new roles. This is largely due to the impressive versatility many players possess. For the fifth time under head coach Yvette Healy, the Badgers had a 30-plus win season, the most by any UW softball coach.

Two pitchers earned weekly Big Ten honors as Kaitlyn Menz was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week and Kirsten Stevens was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week. Menz was just the sixth Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree.

The Badgers made NCAA tournament appearances in three of the last five seasons.

The 2017 team goes into the Wisconsin record book with the most RBI (250), walks (212) and sacri-fice flies (14) of any season, as well as the third-most doubles (64), fourth-most home runs (42) and eight-most hits (384).

The 2017 pitching staff recorded the fifth-most shutouts (11) of any past team. As a freshman Kaitlyn Menz locked up the third-most wins (24) in a single season by a UW pitcher.

Senior Chloe Miller became UW's second NFCA National Player of the Week and the second National Pro Fastpitch league draftee. She was taken in the No. 11 spot by the Akron Racers.

Wisconsin recorded upset wins over three ranked opponents last season.

Despite a thrilling sixth-inning rally and a standout performance from freshman Kaitlyn Menz in the circle, the Wisconsin softball team fell to Ohio State, 3-2, in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Big Ten Tournament.

After giving up three runs in the second inning, the Badgers (33-15 overall, 11-11 Big Ten) made an incredible rally in the sixth inning to cut the Ohio State (34-15, 15-8) lead down to one run. Senior Chloe Miller and junior Brooke Wyderski ignited the Badger offense with back-to-back hits and then both were moved into scoring position after a grounder from senior Sara Novak. Sophomore Stephanie Lombardo smashed a two-RBI single to center field that put UW's only two runs on the board.

A defensive clinic from the Wisconsin softball team led the Badgers to shut out the Iowa Hawkeyes, 3-0, in their opening game of the Big Ten Tournament.

UW (33-14 overall) defeated Iowa (19-32) for the third time this season behind a standout perfor-mance by freshman Kaitlyn Menz and the Badger defense.

The Badgers ended the regular season on a high note, sweeping Maryland on the road last weekend. The Badgers recorded a season-high six doubles in Friday's 8-3 victory, then came from behind to claim Saturday's matchup by a 5-3 score. To top off the weekend, Wisconsin showed a balanced and dominant effort in a 5-0 shutout of the Terps on Sunday.

Wisconsin split the weekend at then-No. 22 Illinois, falling in the series opener, 7-2, before rebound-ing to blank the Illini, 3-0, on Saturday behind a stellar performance from freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Menz. Weather conditions led to Sunday's game being cancelled.

UW had a rollercoaster weekend against Michigan at home. The historic weekend all started with the first-ever win at home over Michigan at Goodman Diamond on Friday night. It was a night of firsts, as freshman Kaitlyn Menz also earned her first shutout over a ranked opponent. It was the fifth time this season that the Wolverines have been shut out, but only the first time leaving the diamond scoreless at the hands of an unranked opponent.

Menz pitched a career-high 11 innings and held the Badger defense steady by allowing just six hits and no runs from one of the best teams in the country. She also struck out two All-Americans and three All-Region honorees to boot. Sophomore Stephanie Lombardo was the hero of the game, knocking out the walk-off home run

WHO'S ON FIRST? Freshman Stephanie Lombardo was solid at first

base all season long and led the Big Ten with 439 putouts in the regular season and 199 in the conference season.

INJURY UPDATE Sophomore Kayla Konwent has been ruled out

for the season with an upper body injury.

THE BULLPEN: PITCHERS All-Big Ten Pitcher Kaitlyn Menz looks to lead

the ship once again during her sophomore season. As a rookie, the Waukee, Iowa native notched 24 wins from the circle, threw six shutouts and was named the team's Defensive Player of the Year. Freshman Haley Hestekin is expected to provide great support and serve as the team's secondary starter with Mariah Watts and Angela Morrow poised to finish games off as closers.

INS AND OUTS: INFIELD Behind the plate, junior Melanie Cross will take

over as the Badgers' primary catcher. When given a rest day, freshman Taylor Johnson may be looked upon to move from the infield to the catcher position due to her physicality and versatility.

Seniors Kelsey Jenkins and Brooke Wyderski will be the foundation of the Wisconsin lineup due to their ability to crush the ball and skill in the infield.

Sophomore Jordan Little spent the 2017 season in right field but is a true infielder and could push for a spot up front. Freshman Lauren Foster could also push for a spot in the infield. Her tremendous athleticism has allowed the coaches to use her in multiple positions during fall and spring practice.

INS AND OUTS: OUTFIELD In the outfield the Badgers will showcase a

lot of experience, range and speed. Juniors Gabby Scherle and Kelly Welsh have focused on improving their offense this offseason. Sophomores Heather Rudnicki and Sydney Lawson have also pushed to improve their bat-ting and possess the speed necessary to be top-notch outfielders.

INS AND OUTS: UTILITY Samantha Arents and Brianna Flugaur each offer

the team special skills and senior leadership that will be needed throughout the season. Flugaur ranks among the speediest players in the Big Ten and can steal a lot of bases. In 2017, she ranked third in the conference with 21 stolen bases. Arents is one of Wisconsin's most powerful hit-ters and often shines as a pinch hitter or as the designated player.

LAST TIME OUTNCAA TOURNAMENTMay 11-12, 2017 | Ann Arbor, Mich.

uThe Wisconsin softball team (35-17) bowed out of the NCAA Tournament after suffering a 9-0 loss to third-seeded Oregon (50-6) on Sunday afternoon at Jane Sanders Stadium.

uOregon opened up with a hot start that gave the Ducks a 4-0 lead in the first inning off of three hits and three walks. A fielder's choice allowed the first run to come in before a two-RBI single from the Duck's pitcher, Miranda Elish, put in two more runs. Lauren Lindvall drove in the fourth run for the Ducks off of an RBI single up the middle.

uSeniors Kirsten Stevens and Chloe Miller and juniors Brooke Wyderski and Kelsey Jenkins made the Eugene Regional All-Region team.

uKelly Welsh recorded the Badgers' lone hit in the third inning.

uStevens had the second-best ERA (0.88) and second-most strikeouts (9) in the regional.

uChloe Miller led the regional with five RBI, as well as recording two home runs and 13 total bases, both regional highs.

uMiller and Brooke Wyderski led the regional with two doubles each.

uMiller and Sara Novak were the only players to record home runs in the regional.

uThere were 2,162 fans in attendance at Jane Sanders Stadium.

uThe Badgers opened up NCAA tournament play with a dominant 7-2 win over Missouri.

uThe UW seniors were the stars of the show in what was nearly one of the biggest upsets of the NCAA tournament and one of the most exciting games of the season. Seniors Miller and Sara Novak had some of the best performances of their careers as both knocked out home runs against third-seeded Oregon, one of the best teams in the nation, to give Wisconsin a 5-3 lead until the seventh inning when UO rallied and then came back to win, 6-5, in extra innings.

LAST TIME OUTThe University of the Incarnate Word softball team ended the 2017 campaign by winning the last two games of the season against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. On Saturday, the Cardinals edged out the Islanders 3-1 in eight innings.

GAMES 1-4: TEXAS CLASSIC - TEXAS, COLORADO STATE, INCARNATE WORD TEAM INFORMATION

HEAD COACH yvette healy

Yvette Healy enters her eighth season at the helm of the program with the highest winning percentage of any UW coach in the program’s 20-year history with a .601 winning percentage (228-147-1).

With a 35-17 record in 2017, Wisconsin reached the NCAA Tournament and playing for the regional championship for the third time in five years. The Badgers started the season with seven-straight wins, the best start in program history, and went on to record a program-best 13-game road win streak from Feb. 25 to March 25, 2017. Healy secured her fifth season with 30-or-more wins with the Badgers, the most of any UW softball coach. The team topped the record books in RBI (250) and walks (212) while ranking in the top-10 for several categories.

Under her tutelage, Chloe Miller became the program’s first-ever NFCA All-American, the first USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year finalist, and the second-ever NFCA Player of the Week and NPF Draft pick (No. 11, Akron). In her senior year, Miller became the program’s all-time leader in career multi-RBI games (53), career RBI (181), career home runs (31), and runs (145), ranking sec-ond all-time with 215 career hits and 57 career multi-hit games.

Healy’s 2016 squad faced nine top-25 teams, securing a 5-3-1 record against its ranked foes. The Badgers batted in 244 runs in 2016, just three RBI shy of the all-time season record, while tallying the third-most runs (265) and walks (196) all-time. Senior Taylor-Paige Stewart single-handedly achieved four saves on the mound, tying the program’s team season record.

Wisconsin has had a total of 11 first-team All-Big Ten selections in program history with nine of those coming in the Healy era. Kelsey Jenkins, who earned back-to-back first-team All-Big Ten accolades in 2015 and 2016, was the first fresh-man in UW history to collect the honor.

Healy has helped her players seen just as much success off the field as she has on the field. The Badgers have received a total of 32 combined Academic All-Big Ten recognitions in the last seven seasons.

The 2016 senior class recorded 129 wins in four seasons, the third-most wins by any Wisconsin class, while the 2015 senior class went down as the second-winning class in school history with 135 victories. In the last six seasons, Wisconsin has had four 30-plus win seasons after only previously having five 30-plus win campaigns in 15 seasons.

In 2015, the Badgers clinched the highest season on-base percentage (.389) in school history and claimed the Wisconsin single-season walks record (176). The season also the sea-son record for stolen bases shattered (118 stolen bases) along with setting

the highest single-season batting average (.296).

Healy entered the 2015 season having led the team to its sec-ond consecutive NCAA Regional Championship. Healy directed the team to the NCAA tournament in back-to-back seasons, which had only been done once before by UW in 2001 and 2002 and only a total of three times in the history of the program.

At the end of the 2014 season, the Badgers finished in two final national polls for just the fourth time in the program’s 19-year history and the second consecutive year. UW came in at No. 24 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 and received votes in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 for the eighth time in the season. Wisconsin finished the 2014 sea-son at No. 32 in the NCAA Softball Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), after facing nine of the 31 teams who posted a higher RPI ranking.

The 2014 season boasted the second-highest win total (36) in school history. The Badgers defeated six ranked opponents and tied with the 1997 team for the most top-25 wins in a season. UW won four NCAA tournament games over the last three seasons, having won one in the program’s first 19 years of existence. For just the second time in program history, the team achieved a pair of NCAA tournament wins matching their run in 2013.

The conclusion of the 2014 season marked the end of incred-ible careers for Cassandra Darrah, Mary Massei, Michelle Mueller and Stephanie Peace. Under Healy, the senior class went down in the history books as the most winningest class in UW history at 144-75.

The 2007 Horizon League Coach of the Year, Healy guided the Loyola (Ill.) Ramblers to a top-four confer-ence finish in every season she was at the helm. She has coached four NFCA All-Mideast Region players over the last four seasons, and the team set the single-season school record for batting average (.292) in 2010. Healy’s team also set single-season Loyola records for stolen bases (116) and home runs (37) in 2009.

As Healy was winning coach of the year honors in the Horizon League in 2007, the team was capturing the conference title with a 14-5 record.

Pitcher Amy Solava was also named the league’s pitcher of the year, just the third player in school history to earn the award.

Off the field, Healy was instru-mental in the team’s community service participation. She was a part of numerous campaigns to give back, including the Strike Out Cancer Fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Healy’s teams have also excelled in the classroom. The 2010 team was the recipient of the 2010 NCAA Academic Performance Program APR Award, while nine players in her time were named Academic All-District by ESPN the Magazine and 25 were chosen as Scholar Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

She took over as head coach at Loyola in July of 2004 after spending two seasons as an assistant at her alma mater, DePaul. While with the Blue Demons, Healy coached five All-Americans as the team won the Conference USA title in 2003 and 2004 to make the NCAA tournament.

A two time All-American and three-time Academic All-American as a player, Healy ranks second on the DePaul single-season chart with a .424 batting average and is the school’s all-time leader with 102 stolen bases. In her senior campaign in 1999, Healy led the Blue Demons to a school-record 54 victories, an NCAA Regional Championship and the College World Series as the team wrapped up the year ranked third in the nation. She earned All-Mideast Region honors on three occasions as well.

Prior to her collegiate coach-ing career, Healy worked for the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox Academy as Director of Marketing. She also served as head softball coach at her alma mater Providence Catholic High School, where she was the salu-tatorian at her graduation in 1995.

Healy graduated cum laude and earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing and communications from DePaul in 1999 and her master’s in secondary education and English from DePaul in 2007. She and her husband Shawn have been married since 2006. They currently reside in Madison with their two daughters, Grace and Maeve.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING...

DePaul head coach Eugene Lenti:"Yvette Healy is the perfect fit for Wisconsin. She has everything you're looking for in a head coach with her leadership skills as well as her experience. She's a talented offensive coach, who loves to be aggressive, executing hit and runs, squeezes, etc. She's also a great recruiter and family-oriented per-son who understands what it takes to be a successful student athlete, being that she was an All-American herself."

Arkansas head coach Mike Lara-bee:"Yvette is a coach that I have always had great respect for. Her teams are always very well coached, disciplined and know how to play the game with energy and passion. She will do an outstanding job in turning around the Wisconsin softball program."

GOODMAN SOFTBALL COMPLEXL

ocated on beautiful Lake Mendota, the Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman Softball Complex offers the University of Wisconsin softball program state-of-the-art amenities. From the indoor practice facility to the newly resurfaced playing field, the Badgers are happy to call Goodman Softball Complex home.

The complex, located at 2415 University Bay Dr., is an extensive redesign of the previous softball field. Groundbreaking took place on June 25, 1998, and the Badgers opened the facility with a 9-1 victory over Loyola on March 30, 1999. The field and grandstands -- with a capacity of approximately 1,600 -- are positioned just north of Nielsen Tennis Stadium and share the park-ing areas in that proximity. Spectators have the view overlooking University Bay and Picnic Point. The facility meets the require-ments of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Goodman brothers, longtime area softball players, businessmen and UW donors, provided the lead gift of $500,000. Named for the Madison jewelers, the original renovation project cost more than $1.2 million and has been affectionately dubbed, "Goodman Diamond."

2002 marked the first year under the lights for the Badgers. The lighting system was made possible by Bob Goodman, one of the original donors who made the field possible.

In 2011, the Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman family foundation pledged $1.8 million to initiate the Goodman Softball Training Center project, which was a positive start toward the total project cost of $3 million.

The diamond received a complete resurfacing during the summer of 2012 with a new infield and outfield surface being installed. The infield was resurfaced with Hilltopper Infield Mix, natural soil enhanced with polymer that provides excellent drainage and coverage, while the outfield was leveled and tiled.

In 2013 the Goodman Softball Training Center was completed. In the 16,500 square foot indoor facility the Badgers have access to a regulation sized infield, batting cages, team conference room and lounge. In addition, the team locker room and athletic train-ing areas underwent extensive renovations.

Enhancements were made to Goodman Diamond for the 2017 season thanks to a $600,000 gift from the Goodman family foundation, highlighted by the addition of a high-definition video board to elevate the game day atmosphere for the Wisconsin Softball team by providing fans with highlight videos. Fans are further immersed in the game with the addition of player head-shots and various stat displays.

The Dave McClain Athletic Facility serves as the year-round home for a number of University of Wisconsin teams, including soft-ball. The facility, renovated in 2013, offers a climate-controlled indoor training space, locker rooms, sports medicine center and strength and conditioning facilities. Opened in 1988 at a cost of $9.5 million, the McClain Center has undergone an extensive renovation as part of the $86 million Student-Athlete Performance Center project undertaken by UW Athletics to provide first-class facilities for the Badgers.

The centerpiece of the McClain Center is a 76,000-square foot main floor that features a 90-yard practice field utilized by a variety of UW athletic programs. The practice area was re-surfaced in 2013 with the installation of the most advanced playing surface offered by FieldTurf.

The new strength and conditioning center is a 6,000-square foot space that offers a full range of strength training equipment, in addition to a dedicated cardio area and a performance station featuring fresh fruit and nutritional drinks for use in recovery after workouts.

The renovated weight room located adjacent to the McClain Center in Camp Randall Stadium is a 17,000-square foot space that can accommodate as much as the entire UW football 120-man roster for simultaneous workouts. In addition to the latest in weight training equipment custom-built for the Badgers, the strength and conditioning center features a dedicated cardio and warm-up area.

Located within the Camp Randall strength and conditioning center is the expansive Performance Nutrition area that offers fresh fruit, power drinks and a station for making recovery shakes.
