Draft 3 analytical thesis statements that make a claim about Tim Burton’s style as represented by the effective use of specific cinematic techniques. From your completed content frame graphic organizer, select 3 cinematic techniques to create thesis options. Example theses:

Tim Burton manipulates lighting to __[effect]__. Through his use of cinematic elements, Tim Burton creates

grotesque characters in order to __[effect]__. Tim Burton uses the continuous change in camera angles in

order to ___[effect]___. By using multiple editing techniques in his films, Tim Burton is

Drafting: Think about the Burton films you have viewed and analyzed. Choose three or four stylistic elements that are common to these films. Write an essay analyzing the cinematic style of the director. Your essay should focus on the ways in which the director uses stylistic techniques across films to achieve a desired effect.

Introduction Strategy: begin with background of Tim Burton (2-3 sentences). Introduce the three films you will be using (1-2 sentences). Transition to the thesis. State thesis.

Body paragraphs 1, 2, & 3 Conclusion: wrap up your analysis. Then address a

thematic message we can learn through the style and effect you have addressed. [Wrap up…] By presenting characters the way he does, Burton effectively teaches the world that, sometimes, being different isn’t negative, and it’s only through embracing what makes us different and special, do we learn who we truly are. Once we learn and accept who we truly are, maybe then, we too can make a difference like Alice, Edward and Wonka did.
