Tribute to Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big BandSaturday, June 11, -- 8 p.m. $65, $55, $35

Say “jazz trumpet” to even the most casual jazz fan, and the name Dizzy Gillespie immediately comes to mind. More than half a century after he expanded the parameters of bebop by fusing jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Big Band is an elite corps comprised of some of the finest musicians to play with Dizzy. Downbeat Magazine calls them “a tribute band in the best sense, not trading on Gillespie’s legacy, but carrying it on.” Musical Director and NEA Jazz Master Slide Hampton leads this stellar group of musicians.

For the past ten years our spiritual home for the High Holidays has been “The John Harm’s Theater,” newly renamed “The Bergen Performing Arts Center.” We can show our support for the Arts Center by attending their wonderful concerts and exhibitions on a regular basis. Its success is important to all of us in the community.

I hope my friends will forgive me if I declare that I don't know any one of them without faults and it would trouble me to think that I have friends who don't see mine.

We all give and ask in return forgiveness of this kind. It is a faculty of friendship and it is not one of the least pleasant.

This forgiveness we must give without the desire to improve our friends, because there is not a more clear sign of stupidity than trying to correct the weakness of those we love.

The most beautiful composition of human nature, just like the finest porcelain, may have some imperfections and these, unfortunately in both cases, are incurable, but the general design still remains after all of the highest value.

This is great wisdom and we all need to remember this for our own sake!

Shavuoth, the Feast of the Weeks, is the Jewish holiday celebrating the harvest season in Israel. Shavuot, which means "weeks", refers to the timing of the festival which is held exactly 7 weeks after Passover.

Shavuoth also commemorates the anniversary of the giving of the Ten Commandments to Moses and the Israelites at Mount Sinai.

Chavurah Beth Shalom will be saying Yizkor prayers on Sunday evening June 12, at 8 p.m. in Alpine at our service for Erev Shavuoth. The Yahrzeit / Yizkor CandleThere are 4 times a year when Jews light a special candle, called a Yahrzeit Candle, in memory of loved ones who have died. Yizkor is a memorial service which is recited on Yom Kippur as well as the last days of Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot. Yizkor, which is the Hebrew word for "remember", asks G-d to remember those we mourn and to grant them proper rest.

A Yahrzeit Candle is lit at sundown on...

1. The first night of Yom Kippur

2. The night of Shemini Atzeret (the 8th night of Sukkot)

3. The second night of Shavuot

4. The last night of Passover

Shavuot and the Ten CommandmentsShavuot is also known as Zeman Matan Toratenu, the Season of the Giving of Our Law, which commemorates the receiving of the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai.

After Moses and the Israelites fled the slavery of Egypt, they wandered the desert. G-d provided the travelers with food to eat (manna) and water to drink. After long months Moses brought his followers to the foot of a mountain called Sinai. Though the desert was dry and bare, the mountain was lush and green, covered with grass, flowers and trees. Moses and the Israelites set up camp at the base of the mountain.

On the third day of the Hebrew month of Sivan, Moses was commanded by G-d to prepare the Jewish people for G-d's decent and visit. The Israelites washed and purified their clothes and their bodies. Three days later, on the sixth day of Sivan, the people were awaken by thunder and lightning. Thick, dark clouds hung over the mountain. The sounds of the Shofar, the ram's horn, were heard echoing across the desert. The earth began to tremble and shake.

Then the Israelites heard a voice, G-d's voice, as he spoke to them from out of the clouds.

And G-d gave them his Ten Commandments

The Spirit of Chavurah Beth Shalom

A chaver or haver is a companion or friendThe early rabbis used the term to refer to one's study partner. In the 1960's young Jewish adults began to look for alternatives to the large urban and suburban synagogues.

In time, Chavurot were organized within synagogues. There are numerous varieties, but they are people who can learn and celebrate together, and be with one another in times of joy and sorrow.

New forms continue to develop, but in a time when extended families are often distant and synagogues are so large that people don't know each other, theneed and benefits are clear.

Although Chavurah Beth Shalom is a congregation of nearly 250 families, we are always striving to maintain the character and spirit of our beginnings fifteen years ago. This is clearly evident on Shabbat morning at The Alpine Community House, where we meet for our 9:30 AM minyan and 10:30 AM Judaic Studies Class. The Wednesday afternoon religious School community can be seen as a chavurah in that families build relationships built on the friendship of their respective children. Also our monthly Havdallah happenings held in diferent homes combines, prayer, study and socialization which has inspired many deep friendships.

However, we need to bring many more of our congregants into the spirit of Chavurah Beth Shalom. Please let us know if you would like to work with us to encourage more of your friends in your particular community to participate in our activities and to become a part of our congregation.

Our Youth Program for our teen age members will feature non classroom activities such as field trips, social activites, dramatic presentations and guest speakers which will meet monthly. The group will be lead by Shiri Gall, who teaches in our Wednesday
