Speaking a word or two of another language is a good opportunity to expand our horizons. One of the great things about living in Tokoroa is how we celebrate different cultures. Our school integrates Samoan culture into our annual South Waikato Cultural Festival performances and we currently have four students who identify as part or full Samoan. Term 2 Week 6 2015

Kia ora, Kia Orana, Maloilelai, Talofalava, Kumusta, Greetings to you all.

Special Character Focus:

What happened at Pentecost? Fifty days after the Resurrection at Pentecost Jesus poured out the Holy Spirit on the apostles and Mary. The Holy Spirit came in the form of wind and tongues of fire and enabled the apostles to speak in different languages. Today we celebrate Pentecost as the birthday of the Christian faith. With the help of the Holy Spirit the apostles were able to carry on the mission of Christ, proclaim God’s Word and perform many miracles and wonders. Today, in the 21st century, the Holy Spirit still works actively in the Church and in the hearts of the faithful. Through the Word of God and Sacraments, the Holy Spirit gives us the faith to believe and trust in Christ as our Saviour.

Prayer Intentions: For Kylie Taylor (our Griffin boys’ mum) that she makes a speedy recovery from her car accident

injuries. For all those who are suffering cold and flu symptoms.

Principal’s Platform

Talofa lava everyone This week is Samoan Language week. Did you know that Samoan is the third most spoken language in New Zealand with 144,000 people at the last Census identifying as Samoan. Speaking a word or two of another language is a good opportunity to expand our horizons. Learning other languages gives us insight into the people, the culture and traditions of other countries and helps us to understand our own language and culture. One of the great things about living in Tokoroa is how we celebrate different cultures. Our school integrates Samoan culture into our annual South Waikato Cultural Festival performances and we currently have four students who identify as part or full Samoan.

The theme for this year’s Samoan Language week is “Tautua nei mo sou manuia a taeao” – “Serve now for a better tomorrow”.

Be brave and try some Samoan vocabulary:

Good morning – Manuia le TaeaoHave a great day – Ia manuia le asoHave a great week – Ia manuia le vaiasoHave a great evening – Ia manuia le afiafiTake good care of your health – Vaai fa’alelei lou soifua

Board of Trustees Announcement:

It is with sadness that we have to inform our school community that Mrs Sheree Jansen has resigned from her position as teacher in McAuley Class. The Board of Trustees would like to thank Mrs Jansen for her time and effort in our school and for the contributions she has made to learning for our senior students. We wish her well and God’s blessing for her future endeavours. The Board of Trustees are now in the process of advertising for a new teacher for McAuley class.

On Monday night I had the pleasure of joining our Bishop Believers Netball team as they travelled to Hamilton to watch the netball match between Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic and the Central Pulse. It was a great night out of team bonding and an opportunity for our girls to watch some of their favourite netball role models in action. A big thank you to Caroline (our office administrator) and Wendy (the coach) for organising this girls’ night out. Thank you also to Mrs Jansen and Blue Light for providing us with transport.

Next month we begin our very busy assessment month as we as teachers gather learning information on your children’s learning and achievement in relation to the National Standards. At the end of the month our students will be hosting our annual “Student Led Conferences” where they will share their learning and achievement with you. Next week we will send out booking forms.
