EcoBeast Photos

We had 8 students.

To explain Sustainability we developed a simple Drama section. We have included photos of the resources we made at the end of the script. We found this to be a really powerful and easy to understand demonstration.

WelcomeStudent 1 - Slide 1 and 2Welcome to our Sustainability Assembly, we are going to talk about

1. Tell you all about EcoBeasts CAD day2. Explain what Sustainability is3. Tell you about our EcoBeast Club4. Launch an Ecobeast competition5. Tell you about Sustainability Week at Shrewsbury

Student 2 - Slide 3-7So what is Ecobeasts?Eco Beasts stands for Bangok Education for Action on Sustainability TeamIt started with 120 children from 17 different school from all over Bangkok and their teachers. And also 15 different companies who do things to help look after our planet. All these people met a few weeks ago at the Ecobeasts Community Action Day. We were there! It was a great day! This is a picture of it, look at all the children! (point to the slide)

Student 3 - Slide 7 and 8The children in this picture are watching talks by other children who do things around Bangkok to help look after our planet. It was really interested hearing what they have to say. It showed us that even though we are children, our actions matter and we can do things to look after the world we live in.

There was 15 different workshops at the event, we all took part in 3 and then shared back to our school what we learned. We are going to share these with you.

Student 2 - RoofTop GardenThe children wrote their own account, the photos showed them at the workshop

Student 3 - Fast Fashion WorkshopThe children wrote their own account, the photos showed them at the workshopThere were many more workshops, they taught us lots of different things about sustainability.

Teacher Speaking - Slide 14 - 17Do you know what Sustainability means?Sustain to keep something going on and onAbility when you can do somethingSustainability is doing things so they can go on on and without doing any damage to the planet.

Sustainability means be careful about the things we do, making sure we don’t harm our planet and everything on it. Making sure we only use what we need and don’t create lots of waste. The word sustain means to keep things going. It’s a hard thing to understand!

So we are going to show you an example.

Where does paper come from? Trees!

Slide 18 - Where Paper Comes from Video

Slide 19- The Paper Maker Drama

Stage Set up - Paper Maker Machine in centre(photos of how to make at end of script)

Forest on one side, with 3 cardboard strips representing logs of wood. Axe.

Other side with school desk, chair, pencils and waste bin. Whiteboard and pen out of view.

Characters x4Woodman at forest, Pupil at Desk, Teacher next to desk, Tree planter, off stage with 3 small plants

Let me introduce you to our paper machine Here are our trees!

Page 3: ecobeastsbkk.com · Web viewThe word sustain means to keep things going. It’s a hard thing to understand! So we are going to show you an example. Where does paper come from? Trees!

So we need to cut down trees to make paper right? We use a lot of paper at school.Lets see what happens in our paper machine story.

Pupil at desk - I need paper!

Teacher asks Woodman for Paper

Woodman - mimes cutting tree with axe, takes cardboard log to machine and feeds in one side (machine sounds)Teacher - takes paper out other side and gives to pupil at deskPupil - uses the paper carelessly scrunches up and throws in the bin and shouts - More paper!

Repeat the process x3 until there is no more wood. Woodman says there is none left, noone knows what to do.

Explain that this is not sustain-able - we are not able to keep doing it forever. What can we do to make it more sustainable? Ask the children in the audience, stimulate discussion.

The 2 changes are - ● we can replace resources as we use them, introduce the tree planters. Explain we have

to plant at the same rate as we use.● We can use alternatives that are more sustainable - eg whiteboard.

Repeat the activity with the boy using a whiteboard and the paper piling up. Have someone planting trees so the wood doesn’t run out.Point out that this is now sustainable as we have changed out habits to look after the planet. By thinking about what we do and the way we do it we can make a difference.

All our actions matter!Sustainability can apply to lots of different things. Not just paper. Do you think it’s important to help? Do you think we can help?

Slide 23 Sustainability Week

This week is Sustainability week at Shrewsbury City Campus. Your class teaching is going to read you a story book about one area of Sustainability, then you have an activity to do from it. You work is going to be displayed in the children forum, next to the giant butterfly! We can’t wait to see what you all do!

We also have a class challenge, there are 3 things that you have to complete for the next week. The winning class might get a surprise!

We have a competition - we need an EcoBeasts designed. All the 17 schools are taking part, the winner will become the EcoBeast mascot and be on the website for everyone to see! You teaching will tell you more about this.

Finish with Song.
