2018 Spring Camporee Leader’s Guide

LOCATION: Rybolt Field at Camp La-No-Che

DATE: May 4-6, 2018

THEME: Scouts of the Square Tables

Come join the Scouts of the Little Econ District in our “Scoutly” version of one of the best time periods of all. This camporee is based off of the medieval period, so scouts should model “knightly” behavior. The emphasis of the Camporee is fun and fellowship, with a flair from the Middle Ages.

COST: $23 per participant, which includes a Camporee patch and an invitation to the camp wide round table dinner on Saturday. Please bring a dish to share.

PRIOR TO THE CAMPOREE: The word “guild” can be defined as, “an association of people for mutual aid or the pursuit of a common goal.” Another word for this is fellowship– and in Scouting, we are a fellowship! Some guilds were differentiated by either their goals, or their occupations. At the Camporee, it is requested that your guild (Troop) bring a handmade shield (must be created by the troop) depicting the occupation or goal of your guild. This can be as simple as a large piece of painted cardboard, and a handle, or as complicated as you would like, remember this is your guild – your choice. To add to the medieval spirit, each Troop is also encouraged to construct a campsite gateway with a banner or sign – with guild affiliation - to go along with the theme of the weekend. Also, developing a guild-wide cheer or yell will add to the excitement of the events.

ARRIVAL AT CAMP: To facilitate a smooth check-in process, prior to arrival at Camp, all participating units will receive a map of the camp with their designated camping area noted. Upon arriving at camp, Troops should proceed to their designated camp site and begin set up. Once at your site, the Scoutmaster or their designee should report to the host site area to check-in. Please ensure that the below vehicle procedures are followed.

VEHICLES IN CAMP: Only vehicles pulling trailers should be in camp sites; please limit this to one vehicle/trailer per site. All others should be parked in the designated parking area near the entrance to Rybolt Field.

CHECK-IN: Registration/Check-in opens at 6:30 P.M. on Friday and closes at 9:00 P.M. If you did NOT pre-register, you will need to pay all appropriate fees for your Unit at the time of check-in.

CHECK-OUT: Check out will begin immediately after the Scout’s Own Service Sunday morning. Please refer to the check out sheet in this Guide and have it prepared for your camp staff aide. Please note your aide will be strictly observing and adhering to the Leave No Trace principles at check out. You cannot be released until your form is signed by your camp aide. Please leave your campsite area ‘better than you found it’.

ALCOHOL AND ILLEGAL DRUGS: No alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs of any type will be permitted in camp.

FIREARMS: No fireworks or firearms of any kind will be allowed at the Camporee.

BUDDY SYSTEM: The buddy system is required for all scouts - all the time – at the Camporee.

BEHAVIOR: As with any Scouting activity, our behavior is in accordance with the Scout Oath, the

Scout Law and the Golden Rule.

SECURITY: Please lock your vehicles and secure valuables. The Boy Scouts, Camp La-No-Che, the District, and the Camporee host staff will not be liable for lost or stolen items.

UNIFORM: Appropriate Scout uniform should be worn during the Camporee. Class “B” uniform (Scout themed T-shirts) are appropriate, except for the Saturday night campfire and Scouts Own Service on Sunday (full field Class “A” uniform required for both these events). For the weekend, Class “B” uniforms are designated appropriate wear for both activity and Full field uniforms.

FIRST AID: Units should handle all minor First Aid needs for their Scouts. For medical emergencies, locate a Camporee staff member. Each unit should bring their BSA medical forms with them. Unit medical forms will be reviewed at check-in.

TRASH: All trash is to be properly bagged and hauled out by the individual participating units. Please bring your own garbage bags. We ask that you remind your Scouts to use good judgment.

FIRES: Campfires are at your discretion, please ensure your scouts are exercising good judgment. Use Leave No Trace concepts in all that you do this weekend. There may not be firewood available at the campsite so be prepared to bring your own supply. Please join us for a Cracker Barrel, announcements, and Camporee updates on Friday night (SPLs and Scoutmasters only); this Cracker Barrel will be hosted by our host troop, Troop 363

SITE INSPECTIONS: Sometime after lunch on Saturday, the inspection team will visit your campsite to judge your gateway and campsite.

SUNDAY MORNING: This activity will provide a Non-denominational Scouts’ Own Service. In keeping with the spirit and intent of Lord Baden Powell, the service will be brief but inspirational for all.

WATER: There is potable water available at Rybolt Field.

OTHER FACILITIES ON SITE: There are 2 restroom facilities located at the east end of Rybolt Field. Additionally a limited number of Port-a-lets will be available.

Events

1. Cooking King Arthur’s Feast (a.k.a. Fire Building)

Set-up and Rules: Two stakes are stuck in the ground about two feet apart. Twine is stretched across the stakes 12-18” above ground. Material including wood planks, logs, tinder and kindling will be provided that will be dry and easy to light and burn, and only three matches. At a signal of “GO”, all brave Knight will create a wood fire structure and start the fire to cook an imaginary beast on the spit (the twine). Time is stopped when twine burns through or the beast is cooked well done. Knights of the Roundtable may only use the material provided. They cannot hold the match or any other fire starter under the twine. Each participant needs to “bring his own knife” or other helpful items to prepare tinder, kindling and fuel as appropriate. Use of an axe is not permitted. For this event, each participant present a valid Totin-Chip and FireM'n-Chit to the judge first!

Solution: Make it right the first time. Before lighting the first match, start with a teepee or log cabin of tinder and some small kindling. Feed it slowly at first, adding additional fuel carefully, and one piece at a time. Make the structure as high as possible or next to the twine to burn it quickly.

Scoring: This event is scored on time to completion. First place will receive 5 points, second will receive 4 points, and participants will receive 3 points.

2.) Finding Enemy Forces (a.k.a. Geocaching)

Objective: This event will involve a combination of Orienteering Skills and use of a GPS unit to locate hidden warriors seeking to overthrow King Arthur from his throne. Familiarity with the operation of a handheld GPS device is helpful. Warriors will be given a challenge that will be solved by the use of geocaching skills. A review of the Geocaching Merit Badge booklet is highly recommended or using on-line resources to learn how to geocache. Details of the challenge will be provided to all warriors seeking to locate enemy forces when they begin the event. GPS units will be provided, or you can bring your own.

Scoring: This event is scored on time to completion. First place will receive 5 points, second will receive 4 points, and participants will receive 3 points.

3.) Knight’s Training

Objective: The Knight mounts his trusty steed and proceeds around the course, collecting the brass rings using his lance. The “steed” will be a push car. One scout will ride and 2 others will provide motive force. When time begins the steed may not stop while on the course. If the judge determines the steed has stopped, the patrol will receive a 5 second penalty adding to their time for each violation. Using the lance provided, the scout will collect the rings suspended throughout the course. After collecting all the rings, the steed will return to the starting point. Time will begin at the judge’s signal and end when the team returns to the finish line. Patrols are encouraged to bring their own push cars; however, there will be at least one available for the event.

Scoring: this event is scored on time to completion. First place will receive 5 points, second will receive 4 points, and participants will receive 3 points.

4.) Tug O’ War

Objective: Pull the opponent over the designated line. This will be a single elimination “bracket event” The number of scouts participating is limited to the number of the smaller troop in each event. Gloves are permitted. If your troop wins, they move to the next bracket. If you lose, you are out.

Scoring: This event is scored based on bracket placement. First place will receive 5 points, second will receive 4 points, and participants will receive 3 points.

5.) Defend the castle

Objective: using a sling shot provided, the scouts must hit various targets using only natural projectiles the scouts collect. The patrol who hits the most targets in the allotted time wins!

Scoring: this event is scored on accuracy and precision. First place will receive 5 points, second will receive 4 points, and participants will receive 3 points.

6.) Bucket-headObjective: Fill the garbage can with the most water. Troop will line up in single file lines. On each sided there will be a bucket, one empty and one full (the scouts should all be facing the empty bucket unless filling smaller bucket). When the event begins, the scout on the side with the full bucket will take a smaller bucket (provided) and fill it up, then provide to place it on top of the next person's head. The next person in line can help by using his hands to receive it, but cannot turn around to face the full bucket side. The process of passing the bucket over the

person's head in front of you will continue until the bucket reaches the last person the which point the bucket is emptied into the garbage can and passed back to the starting point where the process will repeat. This will be done as fast as possible until time is called, the team with the most water in the originally empty garbage can wins.

Scoring: this event is scored on amount of water in the bucket. First place will receive 5 points, second will receive 4 points, and participants will receive 3 point.

7-10.) Field Surgery (First Aid Meet – 4 events)

A First Aid Meet presents the patrol with a realistic emergency scenario and challenges them to apply all aspects of their First Aid training: assessing the situation, sending for help, treating for shock and hurry cases, and providing other first aid treatment as needed. This scenario-based approach is different from a skills-based competition, such as “demonstrate splinting a broken leg”, because the patrol must determine the best course of action and appropriate treatment(s). Troops are encouraged to review the “How to Handle an Emergency” section of the First Aid Merit Badge Pamphlet prior to the Camporee.

Objective: The Meet will consist of 3 to 4 scenarios (one per station), such as a Knight who has fallen off his horse, a Knight injured with a lance, a Page collapsed in the hot sun, etc. One patrol member will be chosen to play the victim, while the others provide first aid. For this reason, patrols should consist of no less than 4 members; ideally 5 or more.

Scoring: Each scenario will be scored based on a set rubric, accounting for factors such as assessment of the situation, steps taken, and correctness of first aid skills used. For each scenario, these scores will be categorized to award points for Good (4), Fair (3), or Poor (2) performance. A separate First Aid Meet award will also be given to the highest placing Troop based on the total rubric score across scenarios.

Activities

For the purpose of this camporee, activities will refer to any game, sport, or pastime that does not earn the troops any awards or points towards the overall best troop of the camporee. Activities are for fun and should be done during free time. All scouts are welcome to participate in all activities. Stay safe and have fun!

Activity: Apple ShootingIn this activity, scouts will have the opportunity to shoot apples with various forms of weaponry. This event requires scouts to be safe. If a scout is caught horseplaying, rough housing, or disobeying range rules, they will be asked to leave.

Activity: GatewayFor this activity, troops are encouraged to build a medieval themed gateway into their campsite. While this event may not win your troop an award, it will get you a few extra points on the campsite inspection.

Activity: GaGa Ball(Octo-Ball)This is a fun game that will be open for scouts to play at any time of the day. It is a game in which scouts stand inside an octagon shaped ring and attempt to eliminate other scouts by hitting a ball at their legs. For more information and official rules, visit https://www.gagacenter.com/nyc/about/what-is-gaga/

Activity: 9 SquareHave you ever played the popular game known as 4 square? Well 9 square is very similar, except the squares are in the air, not the ground. For more information and official rules, visit http://www.9squareintheair.com/how-to-play/
