Chief Executive St John Cymru – Wales

St. John is a major international charity which provides first aid, health care and support services in over 40 countries around the world.

St John Cymru Wales is an independent Priory within the Order of St John and is the leading first aid charity in Wales. St. John is a modern, dynamic and performance driven organisation. Entirely self - funded, it operates successful commercial businesses providing training and ambulance services.

At the heart of everything we do is developing our 4,000 volunteers, over 50% of whom are under 25, to deliver the very best care in line with our mission of providing service to humanity.

We also have a significant role in supporting St John International and its network of charitable activities throughout the world.

St John trains over 30,000 people in first aid each year; delivers over 200,00 hours community service; provides first aid support to thousands of public events; supports the NHS with ambulance services; runs a vibrant youth organisation and provides a range of health and care related community services.

We now wish to appoint an outstanding individual to succeed Keith Dunn OBE the current Chief Executive who will be stepping down at the end of the year.

The new Chief Executive will build on our strong heritage and provide inspirational leadership, implementing an ambitious strategic plan that appeals to current and future generations. We are seeking an enthusiastic individual, ready to develop our vision of responsive high quality services, maximise our marketing and fund raising potential and balance the challenges for charities in today’s society with delivering vital healthcare services.

You will bring to the role energy and new thinking, and a willingness to work with all in the organisation and its partners to meet the challenges ahead.

A message from the Prior for Wales – Sir Paul Williams OBE, KStJ, DL.

St. John Cymru Wales is one the most inclusive and rewarding charitable organisations in Wales. It is entirely a Welsh charity based in Cardiff with locations in over 120 communities across our nation. As we celebrate our centenary next year we can look back on a proud heritage and list of achievements which have contributed so much to the health and wellbeing of Wales. Whilst being an independent Priory, we are part of the world wide Order and organisation of St. John with many international links.

The Order of St. John was founded over a thousand years ago, upon the principle that its members should treat every person, of any faith or no faith, be they rich or poor, young or old, male or female. No one, in any kind of need is rejected.

Over recent years SJCW has undertaken a very significant and successful change programme – ‘One St John ‘with the ambitious mission of having a first aider in very street in Wales. There are 4000 front line volunteers across Wales and a rapidly growing youth section making up over half of our membership. Our volunteers are supported by an expert team of full time staff at Headquarters who manage the provision of first aid training, youth programmes, events management, a fleet of ambulances and specialist vehicles. SJCW provides first and second response in partnership with the Welsh Ambulance Service and patient transport services for a number of the Health Boards. At the County level volunteers are supervised by County Commissioners and supported by a SJCW Council.

I welcome applications for the post Chief Executive from individuals with a proven track record in leadership, managing complex organisations, delivery, governance and a passion for service and volunteering.

Sir Paul Williams

Candidate BriefBackground

The Priory for Wales, known in Wales as St. John Cymru – Wales is part of some 40 International Priories and Associations of The Order of St John and has a Christian heritage going back over 900 years.

There are eleven Priories around the World (there are separate Priories in England and Scotland and in eight other countries).

The Prior is also a Trustee of the International Order along with the Priors, or equivalents, from the other Priories in addition to a number of ‘core’ Trustees. The Priory carries out the Chivalric objectives of the Order in Wales and operates the Order’s Honours system; maintains its buildings and promotes the work of St. John on a local basis throughout the eight Counties.

It also delivers a number of Ceremonial events and in particular the Annual Assembly on St John’s Day in June, which culminates in a Service of re-dedication at Llandaff Cathedral as well as Investiture Services throughout the year. One of the main charitable outputs is the administration of the Order’s Organ Donation Award, which is awarded to the Families of Organ Donors.

It also supports Chaplains, the Ceremonial Team and provides financial and other support to the St John Eye Hospital Group, an independent charity with which it has strong historic links.

All this takes place in the context of managing an annual budget in access of five Million per annum and the need to address a key priority – to improve income generation. The objectives of the Order of St John are to encourage the spiritual and moral strengthening of humanity and to encourage and promote the relief of persons in sickness, distress, suffering or danger. This is expressed in the mottoes ‘Pro Fide, Pro Utilitate Hominum’ (For Faith, For the Service of Humanity).

The Priory’s strategic objectives are:

To embed the principle of ‘One St. John’ throughout the whole organisation. Grow our Youth Programmes. Consolidate SJCW as Wales’ leading First Aid Charity. Continue to expand our commercial operations to support our core charitable

activities. Demonstrate strong governance and provide effective leadership and

management.
