SNEHTA OPEN CALL - ARTIST

SPRING SUMMER 2018

Snehta wants to open its doors to six (6) contemporary art practitioners to live and work in Athens for two months each during the spring period in 2018: three artists in February and March and three in April and May.

An Athens-based curator will work with each artist throughout their stay in support of their re-search and the realisation of their exhibition.

The application deadline is the 25th of November 2017.

Please read carefully all the documents attached on this page, complete the Application Form and return with all relevant material to: [email protected]

Residencies will begin at the start of the two month period and at the end of the second month, so artists should look for flight dates as close as possible to these times.

*Residents are selected by a committee composed of the Snehta team and an external Athens based curator who will work closely with the artists throughout their stay. The curator will be in discussion with the artists prior to and during their visit to Athens about their work and inten-tions, thus aiming to knit a tight collaboration between the artists, themselves and the local scene. The curator’s role will be to guide, discuss and work with all three artists towards an idea or concept. The residency aims towards an organic growth of ideas between the curator

and the artists that will result in the final presentation that will be the mutual product of all ev-eryone involved. The Snehta team will co coordinate and monitor this collaboration throughout.

Snehta was formed in 2012 in Athens with the purpose of bringing international artists and cu-rators in contact with the Athenian art scene. Snehta aims to expand artistic activity and re-search in the City, fostering new relationships and collaborations internally but also beyond the borders of Athens and Greece. Snehta stands for the name of the City of Athens written in re-verse. The title symbolically suggests that resident artists and curators are to rediscover Athens, and furthermore Greece, by translating, reading it reversely or alternatively.

The Residency aims to create a dialogue with the social, material, aesthetic and architectural infrastructure of the City by taking into account historical, psycho-geographical, contemporary and traditional factors that have formed it. Artists and curators alike are called to use the local dynamics and characteristics of the Athenian environment whilst bringing along their own in-terests and inclinations. Snehta is open to highly committed individuals who will demonstrate a genuine interest in the City’s current state, taking into account its current economical, social and cultural condition and its place on a global scale.

1.Who are we looking for

We are looking for contemporary practitioners that will demonstrate a genuine interest in the social context of Athens and who can engage with it critically by challenging social norms and taboos.

We are looking for creative practitioners who will be open to collaborate, work with other artists and curators.

Snehta candidates should demonstrate an interest towards the local community of Kypseli or widely towards other communities based in the city.

We are interested in artists who are driven by a research-based and explorative approach, and who will engage playfully and creatively with the City.

We are looking for people who will show a genuine interest in deriving new conclusions about their awareness of the City.

We will take artists on board who believe in Art as a vehicle for increasing awareness and par-ticipation in the community.

2. What the Residency offers to the artist

The project is research-based and work made from this research by each artist can be shown in an exhibition during their residency period. The Snehta Athens based curator will collaborate closely with the artists and will co-curate end show with them.

In more detail:

We offer lodgings, a bedroom per artist and a studio per artist (for fees see residency agree-ment attached in wesbite)

down. snehta apartment, up. snehta studio (6’ walk distance from each other)

2.

We offer guidance and one-to-one support for the facilitation of each project, including the ac-quisition of various resources requested whether technical or otherwise. Artists must engage in a dialogue with the Snehta team to request assistance.

Access to a wood workshop and a dark room.

We can supply the artist with a tailored toolkit, which can include sites of possible interests, maps and useful contacts.

We encourage our artists to interact with other Athens-based organisations and creative indi-viduals. We offer artists support to communicate and pass their message across to these or-ganisations and individuals.

We offer translation of texts from English to Greek and can work as mediators for the presenta-tion and creation of proposals for additional projects.

We encourage, and can support resident artists to have an open-studio and talks event at the halfway stage of their residency.

The progress and work of each artist will be promoted in our network: Snehta Residency web-site, Facebook, Instagram and through our e-newsletter.

We can support our artists with letters of recommendation for funding applications.

We would like to reinforce and foster collaborations which are beyond the boundaries of the Residency, therefore for any returned visits we will help the artist as much as we can, giving them the reassurance of our network and support.

3. What is expected from the Artist

There is an artist fee of approximately £690 per month plus £100 deposit. Please note Snehta will be mostly dealing in British pounds and all transactions need to take place preferably via online banking or Paypal. For any transactions in Euros or any other cur-rencies they will need to be changed into British Pounds.

Our fee covers all of the above services mentioned in paragraph 2. This price covers the artist for flat and studio related expenses such us electricity, water and Internet-access.

Successful applicants shall pay £200 upon confirmation of their place in the programme. (for more details concerning fees refer to Snehta agreement.closures, (3.2/3.3 & 3.4).

A two-part agreement between the prospect resident and Snehta Residency will be signed. A copy of that agreement can be found on the application page.

The residency doesn’t provide the artists with meals or materials.

Artists should be expecting to spend around £500 (approximately 650 euros) for additional liv-ing costs per month. This figure has been roughly estimated for expenses such us public trans-port costs, food, museum entries and for other re-creational activities through may be higher or lower depending on the activities undertaken.
