2. How does Maharata describe her house?
It was built by Maharata great grandfather. It was an old house. It had high ceilings. The hallways were narrow. There were four rooms. It is the same now as it was back then, but every now and then they gave it a paint.
3. What did they do for entertainment when they were kids?
They went swimming at Waihīrere. They also went eeling.
4. What happened to the local waterways?
The waterways became pollouted by the effluent off the farm.
5. Explain the major features of Maharata’s education.
She went to Mākauri School. It was a Pākehā school. When she left there she went to Gisborne intermediate.
6. What mischief did the kids get into in the country?
If they saw a stranger, they would through fire crackers (double happies) into the cow dung so it would splatter them in dung.
7. There was a situation in their township. What was the situation and how did Maharata and her brother do to ensure it didn’t happen to them?
There was some theft happening in the community. They made makeshift alarms with cutlery that they’de tied together and attached to the windows and doors. They got their mothers jewellery and burried it in the ground. They made spears and waited in the walnut tree to see if the thief would turn up.
