Passage 1

George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia, although he grew up near Fredericksburg. In his childhood and adolescence, he studied math and surveying. When he was 16, he went to live with his brother Lawrence in Mount Vernon. George was scarred with Smallpox before the age of 20, but inherited his brother's land (including Mt. Vernon) when Lawrence died in 1752.Washington's military career began in 1753, when he was sent into Ohio country. In 1754, he battled the French and was forced to surrender Fort Necessity (near present-day Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). He continued as an officer in Ohio country, and served under the British general Edward Braddock when their army was ambushed by the French in 1755.Washington was married to Martha Custis in 1759. Washington managed the family and estate until he took command of the Virginia troops just before the American Revolution. He was made commander of the Continental Army on June 15, 1775. In 1789, he was inaugurated as America's first president. Washington was re-elected in 1792, but refused a third term. On December 14, 1799, seventeen days before the new century, Washington died of acute laryngitis.

Passage 2

The environment has been polluted in many different ways. The three major ways are water, land and air pollution. Water pollution is the contamination of lakes, caused by human activities. It can be harmful to organisms and plants which live in the water. Water pollution occurs when wastes are discharged from waste water treatment plants. Other known causes are factory wastes or leaking underground tanks. These can be chemical substances that are toxic. The polluted water can cause cholera and typhoid fever. Water pollution has led to the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily.Land pollution is the destruction of the earth’s land surfaces. It is often caused by human activities such as careless disposal of wastes, over-mining of minerals and wrong use of land for planting. All these will affect our health in the long run. They will lead to all kinds of diseases such as cancer, heart disease and breathing problems. Land pollution also brings about natural disasters such as flash floods and landslides.Air pollution is also the result of human activity where chemicals and other dangerous materials are released into the

air. This happens through the release of carbon monoxide gas from exhaust pipes of motor vehicles. Other gases such as sulphur oxides are released from the burning of coal and oil. High air pollution levels can cause damage to the environment. It also brings discomfort to humans and other living organisms. In the long term, air pollution can cause serious breathing problems, lung cancer and heart disease.

A desert is a dry place with little rain. How little? A desert gets less than ten inches of rain each year. Some deserts are hot. A few can be cold. A desert is a habitat. A habitat is a place where animals and plants live.Hot deserts are home to many kinds of living things. Animals living there include owls, snakes, lizards, and coyotes. Another hot desert animal is the kangaroo rat. It sleeps underground during the day, when the weather is hot. The kangaroo rat comes out at night, when it is cooler. Kangaroo rats get the water they need from food. They eat mostly seeds.Some plants live in the hot desert. Only a few kinds of trees and bushes can survive there. One of the most common desert plants is the cactus. The cactus collects and stores water in its stem. Sharp spines protect most cacti from animals.

The angry king ordered his guards to put his minister in prison. The minister had argued with the king on some law and order issue. One day, the emperor made a visit to the prison. The minister was lost in his own world. The king told him, “I will release you on one condition. You need to bring me a horse that is neither white, nor black, nor brown, nor grey.” The minister was astonished at this demand. However, he agreed to this condition. A week later, the minister came to the palace. “Have you found the horse?”, the king asked. “Yes, my Lord, “the minister replied. “But I will show him to you only auspicious day.” The king agreed. “Let me know the next auspicious day.” The minister replied, “ I will show you the horse on any day, other than Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday.” The king burst out laughing. He was cleverly outsmarted by his minister. The minister was released and promoted to the next higher position.
