Obtain a backup hard drive system for the ADMJ laptop and Desk Top computers: Updated lesson plans, SLO information, etc., is contained on the computers with no back-up computer system available. Purchase a vehicle for the POST Modular program: We project the POST Modular program to beginin the fall of 2016. Curriculum for this program requires the use of a police vehicle or similar vehicle for ‘slow speed’ maneuvers. Successful completion of the program qualifies candidates as Reserve Police Officers. Reserve Officers can be assigned duties requiring driving 'in-service' patrol vehicles. Obviously the vehicle does not have to be new, just sound mechanically. Prepare for new POST testing system and requirements: The testing system for the POST Modular programmay be improved and put on-line. The best case scenario would be to outfit a computer lab for the ADMJ program. The worst case scenario would be to schedule the classes in one of the labs on campus for testing. Regardless of how it is done, the new testing system will only be available online and require secure access to computers. Test security is a high priority for POST.Establish an Instructor soft uniform purchase system: Instructors in the new program should have a polo shirt with appropriate logo as an identifier that she/he is a POST qualified instructor in the Modular program. Students will be required to wear specific police training type clothing.

Develop and update the ADMJ Video Library with recent training material in the video (DVD) format.

AODS X XArchitecture Curriculum changes at transfer schools have lead to an

increased use of computer-based design tools and design-build projects. With appropriate scheduling and funding, access to computers and software can met through the drafting/CAD lab and the CIS Computer Center. The proposed tech shop in the new Center for Innovation and Emerging technologies would allow students to undertake more complex design-build projects.

Additional funds for instructional materials and supplies will be needed if curriculum review and restructuring leads to the inclusion of more complex fabrication techniques for models and mock-ups.

Art 2-D While Building 4 (the Fine Arts complex) was “renovated” six years ago, much of our basic equipment and furniture was not updated in that process. Critical studio lighting that was requested during the remodel was not supplied and this is our first priority in terms of ensuring optimal instructional success. We also need to gradually start to replace our easels, art “donkeys,” lights, props, and other equipment in the next three years, as most of the equipment has not been replaced for at least ten years. This year I'm requesting one-third of these supplies, with the plan to request another third for the next two years, until all equipment has been updated.

Correct studio lighting in order to teach Renaissance light theory and modeling is a critical need for us for our drawing studio, 4-137/139. As mentioned earlier, this was supposed to be included in the re-model. Our instructional success is severely handicapped without this vital component.

E quipment Technology Instructional MaterialsAstronomy At the end of the Fall 2015 semester, the Astronomy

department will be upgrading the entire GOTO Chronos Hybrid system. We will be upgrading our present Chronos Hybrid D3 SP2HD to the RSA Cosmos Hybrid system. In this system, our present Chronos star projector will be upgraded to the Chronos II star projector. Here are some of the advantages of the Chronos II: LED stars that are 5x brighter, and minimum fan noise, since the LEDs run cooler than the original lamps. We will not have to replace burnt out lamps anymore, which also saves on cost. The digital video component of the hybrid is a state-of-the-art system from RSA Cosmos. The video projectors will afford us high fulldome resolution 4k x 4k pixels. This increased resolution will give sharper, more realistic images and is more in keeping with our state-of-the-art facility. There will be numerous astronomical datasets, allowing us to probe deeper into galaxies, allowing us to display the most recent astronomical discoveries to our students and general public. The installation of this new RSA hybrid system will be the first on the west coast and the third in the country.

E quipment Technology Instructional Materialsinterdepartmental collaborations. In the short term, fulltime and part-time faculty need better laptops to facilitate their work. In the medium to long term, we would welcome a college-wide program to provide additional equipment, training and support of use of technology in all STEM programs for students and faculty. The STOT1 and STOT2 courses are excellent and if they could be offered at times that were during the summer then the ability of full time and part time faculty to take advantage of them would be increased. As online homework systems and WebAccess become more widely used in our courses, we need to ensure there is a sufficient number of work stations for students in the ISC/Learning center; and these centers should be open at hours that fully accommodate students’ schedules. For faculty, learning new technology is time-consuming and costly in terms of equipment (software and hardware), a centralized and well-equipped location (such as a STEM technology support lab) would maximize our efforts to learn and apply new technology into our teaching. Our Chemistry supply budget of $10,500 for equipment and supply and various consumables have not changed over the past 8 years. The cost of many chemicals and supply has gone up ranging from 5-15% along with increase in shipping cost. For our students to remain competitive for transfer and in the current job market, it is essential for them to be exposed to a broad range of experimental methods and experience of handling hazardous materials. These experiments require the use of expensive glassware and chemicals. We need to have a gradual increase in supply budget in order to cope with higher material cost and inflation. Equipment: 1. The pH electrodes are reaching their lifespan and need to be replaced. We will need to purchase a minimum of 60 pH electrodes. 2. We may need to replace the data acquisition system with another type of data acquisition system. This will require at least 40 stations and 40 each of the corresponding probes that go with the new system. 3. We need to buy at least three more centrifuges. 4. We need to

introduce concepts through modalities that appeal to kinesthetic and 3D visual spatial learners. These models help bring alive a concept of atomic orbitals that is challenging but fundamental to the understanding of chemistry.2. Water electrolysis and gas law demo kits. Large scale models of sodium chloride, water, graphite and diamond.3. Replacement ACS exams.4. Replacement calculators.5. All of the equipment, glassware and miscellaneous items fall into this category as well as we need them to teach our classes.

The GC/MS instrument can be used for demo purposes. This instrument requires preventative maintenance. 8. MeasureNet stations have been failing and require 10 replacements. 9. We need to replace 10 colorimeter probes for the MeasureNet stations. 10. Hoods require inspection and necessary repairs.Glassware and other miscellaneous items: 1.There is a high turnover of glassware as a result of student usage. It is essential to replace this glassware. 2. The last time we purchased full organic microkits (sets of equipment essential for organic labs) was in 2005. More glassware is needed: 20 more microkits. 3. We need to buy at least 20 silicone rubber hand protectors. 4. We need to buy 20 desiccant cartridges.

Computer Information Science

The CIS Computer Lab is located in building 19, rooms 124 and 126. It is open to all students but priority is given to ARCH, CIS, ENGR, DRAF, BUSW students. There are 45 desktop computers and 2 printers in the lab. All 45 desktop computers and 1 printer will need replacement within the next two years. Additionally, each faculty member will need new high-end computers within this time frame. One instructor needs a MAC computer in addition to her PC.

The beginning programming classes use robots for instruction. These will need to be maintained and replaced within the next two years. New Lego Mindstorms robots are no longer compatible with Lejos Java so the robots would need to be replaced with a different type of robot.

Cosmetology The esthetics machines—equipment used to perform facial procedures—are at the end of their useful life of five years. The demand for Spa facials and client load has risen dramatically and more machines and tables are needed. Delicate instruments used in these procedures cannot stand up indefinitely to continuous use by different students who are still learning how to work with them.

Cosmetology is an ever-changing industry and textbooks are updated every few years which means that instructor materials also need to be updated at the same rate. Instructors need more instructional materials to update the curriculum to meet the demand of an increase of interest by students in the areas of skin care and make up. Air brush make up

E quipment Technology Instructional MaterialsStudents are becoming more interested in Make up and their skills have grown exponentially. It is necessary that the faculty and staff be able to keep up with the demands of our students and the increasing demands of the industry for make up artists. Two members of faculty and staff already took workshops with Kryolan on air brushing and other members will be taking the workshop. We need to purchase air brushing machines and supplies in order to instruct students in this techniques. We also need to purchase some more air purifiers for the Senior lab floor to help with the ventilation problem when doing strong chemical services. We have air movers on the freshmen side that we believe may help on the senior side as well.

1. Computer station requirements will have to be updated as the CAD software programs improve. We now have access to a new computer lab that CIS allows us to use in the evenings. 2. Our projector in 19-110 sits on a roll table that has many cables that are trip hazards. It would benefit the classroon to have the Epson projector secured to the ceiling on a proper bracket.3. desktop CNC machine would benefit all levels of students compared to accessing a 3D printer since the latter requires 3D skills. First semester AutoCAD students work in 2D, thus would not be able to use a 3D system.

Electronics Technology

Equipment and Technology: Currently the faculty is exploring designs for a workstation for hydraulics, pneumatics and vacuum experiments that will be included in ELEC 424 which is a course that will be offered for the A.S. Degree. Aslo the engineering dept. gave the electronics program two three axis robots the will be incorporated into motor control and communication courses once the devices are repaired.

Instructional Materials: The faculty is still exploring the updating of the textbooks used in ELEC 111 and ELEC 112 as well as researching ebooks as a possible replacement to hold down student expenditures. Software packages are also being reviewed for possible use, but at this time there is not a defiant time table or priority driving this.

Engineering X Increased use of group design projects in several classes will lead to a modest increase in the instructional materials and supplies funds needed to support the program.

Below please find several items that need to be considered for replacement or purchase. The request of these items in many instances is directly related to safety concerns for the students and faculty. Because the FT program deals with manipulative skills as well as academic growth, the equipment replacement is necessary to keep current and safe equipment for use.For EMT training- The use of this equipment is essential for the success of the EMT program. These items are needed to adequately train and meet the Federal and State of California Standards for certification. Without this equipment our program will fall behind and suffer. We could also lose our ability to offer the classes by decertification of the program.

Geography X Books and DVDS:  Essential to have a minimal budget for textbooks for the Library and Learning Center. A small budget for DVDS for classroom education.

Geologic Sciences

An updated MacBook Pro for the faculty will eventually be necessary but recent re-imaging of the current MacBook has resolved some of the recent problems, making the need for replacement less urgent.

Samples of the desired minerals, rocks and fossils are usually items that cannot be easily found and purchased. Faculty must travel to rock and mineral shows and stores to try to locate and purchase many of the desired samples and supplies or buy them on eBay.

Library Studies

The CSM Library is responsible for the physical care and access to the archive records of the College of San Mateo. Preservation of the printed materials requires supplies such as acid free boxes to properly store the materials. Access to the materials requires expertise (archival and cataloging) to organize the materials through the creation of catalog records and finding aids. Both activities, preservation and access,  require funding and staff to properly care for the collections. The reference desk area is surrounded by public computers that are used by students and other to complete academic work and research. These computers were installed 4 years ago and will need to be updated soon. The library has the only public photocopy machines on campus. All three machines have been in use for more than 7 years and will need replacing soon. The RFID resources tracking  and circulation system is used by all of the libraries in the PLS system except the college libraries.  It will require new equipment for staff workstations, new item identification and security tags, new security gates and optimally a self-service station that enables patrons to pay library fines via debit or credit cards. It will be more efficient for students and staff and reduce likelihood of repetitive stress injuries.

A five year, statewide contract for EBSCO databases began in 2012-2013. It provided a significant number of databases for community colleges. The library will need to plan now to anticipate the replacement of database funding when the contract ends in 2016-17.

Mathematics Computers are useful in helping to increase arithmetic and algebraic skills for students in Math 811, 110, 111, and 112 (i.e. Basic Skills courses).  Computers are also helping in honing skills for Math 120 (Intermediate Algebra) students.  There is a need for a second computer lab/classroom to aid in teaching Basic Skills Mathematics,

Traditional publishing companies provide copies free to instructors but charge students large amounts to purchase their personal copies of the text.  A growing subset of the mathematics faculty are selecting high quality open-source text book that are offered inexpensively to students. E quipment Technology Instructional Materialsas the present lab/classroom in 16-111 is fully employed for teaching statistics, and is designed for collaborative work (only 20 computers) is not large enough for the estimated demand.Optimal location for this additional classroom will be adjacent to the Math Resource Center with a connecting door and large windows in the wall so that the room may double as an extension to the MRC when classes are not in session. In 2016, the 21 computers in 16-111, the statistics computer classroom will have reached their life expectancy and should be replaced. Projectors in building 16 and 18 have been in service for quite a while, so a replacement plan needs to be developed.

Several classrooms used for Mathematics can become unbearably hot because of the dark shades that are in the rooms.  We are asking to replace these shades with lighter shades which would reflect, rather than maintain, the heat. It is not only a difficult learning environment for both students and teachers, but it could potentially be a health hazard for some people to be in rooms which could possible be in the 90's in temperature. The specific classrooms that we are asking for lighter shades are 18-203, 18-301, 18-303, 18-305, and 18-307. We are asking for a pair of blinds for each classroom - one shear and one opaque.

We need another 4 ft x 7 ft whiteboard in the building 15 Math corridor, specific location between 15-127 and 15-129, in order to accommodate the large number of Math students who wish to have board space and work on Math problems near the offices of Math Department instructors.  Presently, there are 2 whiteboards in the Math corridor but they are not sufficient for the needs of the Math Department instructors and students.

publishers do not provide complementary texts to faculty and to learning centers.  Many publishers only make solution manuals available to faculty as e-versions (previously we could get them as free print copies).  Funds will be needed to purchase print texts and solutions manuals for faculty who prefer print. CSM Ensemble travel and music program outreachAs the performance demands on our ensembles increase, the need to establish a budget for travel and enabling our groups to participate in competitive and non-competitive music festivals and performances is essential.  Jazz festivals, such as the Reno Jazz Festival, Santa Cruz Jazz Festival, Monterey Next Generation Festivals, and performances at state and local conferences are events that include community college ensembles.  Our students have limited access to these events due to lack of funding.  These needs are parallel to the needs of athletic teams,

1.    Arts Complex Faculty Workroom Copy Machine UpgradeThe small machine that the Creative Arts faculty currently has in Bldg 4 is insufficient for art and music department needs. It is too small a machine to handle the load required, is extremely slow, doesn’t staple jobs, and continually has problems needing repair. The Arts Complex Faculty Room needs a bigger and more robust copy machine to service our faculty.2.    Document Camera The entire music department has only one document camera in 2-250. This instructional piece of equipment is a critical tool for effective and efficient use of class time. The music department teaches many lecture classes in 2-240 and 2-110 both of which also need a document camera to facilitate effective teaching.3.    Portable Music Staff Lined Dry Erase White BoardDue to the lack of sufficient lecture room space, music classes are being taught in a large, arena styled performance space (the Choral Room). Currently there is only one small portable music-staffed white board in the room, which is insufficient for lecture style teaching, such as MUS 100. An additional portable white board is needed.

Sound Proofing/Acoustic Treatment in the Music Building While music faculty and students are used to a certain amount of background sound and practicing, the levels in the music building are particularly high – to the point where it is hard to concentrate, practice or teach. This is especially a problem with combo rehearsals that require additional small spaces and make use of drum sets, amplified guitar, and bass. The music faculty recommends that the college consult with a sound abatement expert to create better sound control between existing rooms (lecture, practice, and office rooms) as well as create actual rehearsal spaces (as opposed to repurposed offices).

Instructional software including Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and monitor calibration software. All will need to be updated on a regular basis.

Physics Science programs will always have an ongoing need to replace laboratory equipment.  Tablet computers for faculty are needed to expand web-assisted, hybrid and online offerings.  Faculty tablets would also allow for posting problem solutions that can be “played” with audio and video.  The advantage over static solutions is that students can see and hear how the problem is set up and solved.  An example (without proper captioning) is posted here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odLWMMkTrvI.

Mathematica is a useful program for creating visuals and animations for use in the classroom.  Software licenses for instructor laptops and tablets would be beneficial for student learning.  Screen capture software would also be very useful for faculty to have copies of to supplement classroom presentations.  To allow faculty to more quickly caption video (like the example in the previous section), Dragon Naturally Speaking licences are required.

X Instructional Materials – In building a “reserve” of text books it is not always possible to get a copy donated by the publisher or instructor. It is necessary at times to purchase a copy of a particular textbook. Expanding our reserve may require this more frequently. Online tutoring also requires some additional materials such as a touch pad to interface with the online whiteboard. While not prohibitively expensive (approx. $200) if online tutoring expands it may be necessary to purchase a few more of these touch pads. Two of the LC's most visible programs are Supplemental Instruction and Pathway to College. It is problematic having only 1 person in the LC trained on the SI model and in how to train SI leaders. Sending one or two faculty or staff members to the training would provide better support for this growing program. Also, the Pathway to College program requires each student to have access to the ALEKS online math program. The cost of providing that

2015: The Math department again requests a computer classroom, preferable adjacent to the MRC so that the classroom may become additional MRC space when not in use as a classroom. We understand that tracking of computer replacement is now in the hands of IT.  Below is the continuation of our previous record keeping:2015:  The MRC 3 of the 4 MRC log-in computers are very old, often down, and need to be replaced.2016 - 2017:  The existing 20 slim client computers will need to be replaced.

Approx. $1,500.00 RequestedNo major changes are anticipated.  Funding is requested at the same level as in the previous year:  $1000/yr for textbook and solution manual needs, $500/year for calculator needs.

Modern Languages Center

The MLC has benefited from the move to Building 10 in regard to technology. The Learning Center a sufficient number of PCs/Macs which students can use to complete the majority of the assigned TBA activities. Additionally, there is a significant number of laptop computers that students may use to complete assigned and record conversation. In the future, the MLC would like to provide beginning and intermediate level students with the opportunity to rehearse and record digital video recordings of individual and group oral presentations. This will require greater coordination with COMM Studies, or the purchase and allocation of the necessary equipment, as well as dedicated MLC recording space. It is too soon to make a formal request for these items, as it larger depends on coordination of current resources, but it is import to note the future need in this report.

The MLC  has numerous copies of textbooks currently used in the Spanish courses we offer, as well as various dictionaries and other modern language reference books. Additionally, the MLC has full access to all of the resources available through the Learning Center.

It is our understanding that the administration and IT will now determine which equipment needs to be replaced and that we no longer submit requests for replacement.  However, please note that we urgently need old computers to be replaced in the coming year.

Student Services

Admissions & Records

Student Services including Admissions and Records staff are most fortunate to be housed in a still relatively new facility (four years old) that is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.  For the time being, existing equipment will continue to serve and support operational needs of staff.  However, in two to three years computers and other technological equipment will be near the end of its life-cycle and will need to be replaced. The sobering reality is that all student services staff will encounter the need for technological equipment at about the same time. Thus, it is important that necessary forecasting and budgeting take place to recognize these future requirements.

Career Center The Career/Transfer Center needs a replacement computer for the one that was removed in 2014.   We will need it to conduct the mini-career assessment workshops for undecided new students.  Staff computers will need to be replaced during the next few years.

It would be beneficial to undecided students to purchase major selection pamphlets that could help students identify a major more quickly.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Equipment and Technology: In order to increase productivity and efficiency, the Financial Aid and Scholarship office will constantly rely on scanners. Scanning and later indexing files provides a more efficient process to be able to award students. We anticipate a growing need of high speed scanners. In addtition, we are in need of Increase of  number of lap top computers for the Outreach Center to provide better services to students. The lap top computers we use to help students are very old and slow.  We know that we are lucky to have an extra space to share and provide services to students but since the financial aid population is growing, there will be a need for a larger space in which staff can conduct financial aid and scholarship presentations.  As well, the space can provide staff an opportunity to present workshops on a variety of topics including money management, loan default prevention, and satisfactory academic progress.

International Students Center

We are anticipating the implementation of a new international application (CCCapply or another platform), which will help expedite the processing the applications. Our staff will need training on new software when implemented. Our equipment needs presently include an additional work station computer for staff and student assistant use, a scanner for our eFile project (scanning of current paper documents into Banner), as well as an additional student work station for use by international students during registration and during the academic year for course work and printing. Our long-range plan is to have an additional work station space created in our hallway space with additional student work stations, much like the exterior of Admission and Records. Additional wiring, furniture, and computers would be required for this long-range project.

We will begin drafting a plan for the development of an online orientation, which may include videos and possible tutorials for NEW students to complete prior to coming to the College. In addition, the International Education Program will be in development of training materials for professional development – the requirements for teaching materials have not yet been established.

Multicultural Center

Computers may need to be replaced within the next two years.

Would like to produce a Multicultural Center Folder.

Psychological Services

An office computer needs to be replaced with new computer.

I would like to request professional development funds to support the counseling internship program for our volunteer counselors.  Since the grant will end in spring 2015, CSM Cares also needs funds to continue to provide in-services training/workshops to faculty/staff and students.

Student Life & Leadership Development

Equipment and technology should be upgraded on a constant basis to provide for the most efficient utilization of staff time.
