Backstory

Spending his entire life in a remote village in the mountains, Diego wasn’t used to seeing people from anywhere else come to his village, until one fateful day when a secret government squad arrived and demanded the people of his village to leave and abandon everything they built, the people of the village refused and consequently lead to them being slaughtered. Diego and his younger sister are the only known survivors of this monstrosity.

Diego has sworn to find the person responsible for this, and will bring them to justice and make them answer for what they done. He was taught the fighting style of Rumi Maki from his father and trains every day until he feels strong enough to redeem his people and reclaim their land.

Research on Peru

Clothing: In Peru the traditional clothing can change based on the village. Each village has its own unique style of clothing. Indigenous women in some parts of Peru dress in bright, colourful traditional Andean clothing; these include, capes, shawls embroidered skirts and vibrantly coloured hats.

Since I have to do a Male character, I looked at Male Peruvian clothing, unfortunately there isn’t a lot of traditional clothing for men. This is the closest k

Bringing Diego to life

The first step of bringing my character to life was to create a character turnaround of him. Doing this, I had to consider all the research I had done; National height in Peru, fighting styles and colours

Having finished this, I then had to scan it and put it into Photoshop to draw over it, this was done to make any improvements and to make it easier when turning it into a LEGO character.

This is the end result of my drawing, sketched it with a pencil then drew over it with pen so it could be seen easier when scanned.

Once my sketch was loaded into Photoshop, I then lowered the opacity of it to make it easier when sketching over it.

This is the end result of my sketch of Diego. This was done in Photoshop using the brush and fill tool. Doing this task was a bit different than what I’d usually do but it broadened my perspective on character design and was an enjoyable task to do.

Creating 3D animations

Idle

For this task we got to explore animation inside 3DS max which I was really excited to do. We had to create an Idle, taking damage, punch and kick animation, based off our storyboards.

We started off by loading in a basic 3D rig. I then loaded up a screenshot from one of my videos we done with the greenscreen to use as a reference.

This is the end result of my idle animation position.

Kick

Following the same process as my previous animations, I had my video of the same move I was creating an animation for. This video hurt more since I actually asked my friend to hit me as I was trying to achieve a realistic reaction.

Jab

Following the same process of getting a screenshot from my video, putting it to the side whilst I made my animation. I ended up with my jab animation.

Kick

Out of all the animations I had to create, this was by far the hardest. My animation was glitching throughout the entire duration and I had to restart a few times.

Evaluation

Overall, it was fun to do this task as I had never done 3D animation before, however one of the biggest problems I had was not being able to add a stick to my 3D rig so I had to adapt and make my animations without one.

Creating Diego’s top trump

To start designing Diego’s top trump, I needed to get my sketch of Diego and the drawing I made of him to recreate as a LEGO figure

I started by filling all the base colours in Photoshop for convenience, I would later take it into Adobe illustrator to add details, such as eyes, nose, mouth and abdomen muscles.

Once I had all the details on my LEGO figure, I needed to put him in my Top trump.

I started off by writing my character’s special moves, allies and enemies and backstory; the colours on my top trump will be colours that are popular in Peru.

This is the starting result of my Top Trump, after I had put a mountain landscape of Peru, text and the flag of Peru. Once that was done

This is the final result of my Diego top trump. Overall it was a challenge making certain things and I faced many problems like my character is meant to have a stick as a weapon but due to the fact I couldn’t add anything to my 3D rig I had to leave it how it was – erasing the stick weapon.
