Notes to the teacher: Having covered basic geography for one week, we return to the theme of Canada, this time pretending to take a tour coast to coast. After learning some vocabulary and trying to guess which item belongs where on our big map, we will view a series of very short videos (http://abckelly.blogspot.ca/2017/03/lets-see-canada.html ) and see if we were right or wrong about where one can see caribou, lobster, Niagara Falls, First Nations people, mountains, dog teams, etc. We will cut up tourist brochures and photos printed out by yours truly. Each student or team will choose one area of Canada about which to create a poster collage. That team will use the illustrated vocabulary sheet to keep track of which items belong in their area. We will probably play the videos more than once, perhaps not in the same sitting, to ensure they are able to check off all things that belong on their poster. At the end of the week, each student will set up a table with their poster as the backdrop and welcome other students, “Welcome to BC,” for example. The L/S function of the week is to be able to offer food and decline or accept food. Saskatchewan poster creator will offer wheat crackers. Quebec tour guide will offer a maple cookie, the Ontario guide any fruit or vegetable in season that makes good finger food, etc. Whether your class can offer lobster and/or smoked salmon for the crackers or Nanaimo bars depends on your budget. For the real-world writing task, we will each choose a postcard (I made my own from internet photos and card stock) from a different province, learn how to write a short note about what we “saw” that day while touring, and address it to a classmate. (Optional: photocopy and then actually mail them; the copy serves as the artefact if the recipient fails to return the original after receipt by mail.)Trick question #13: We can see caribou everyday on the quarter!
