Read summaries to group. Analyze each summary and evaluate it by asking the following questions:

Does it only included the most important or major details in my summary?

Is summary written in their own words?

Does summary include ONLY facts based upon the article?

Does summary follow the structure of the original text?

Is summary only one paragraph (4-6 sentences)?

Would someone who has never read the complete text clearly understand what it was about from ONLY reading the summary?

5 Minutes: Closing/Reflection

What is something new you learned about writing an objective summary? How will this change how you write them in the future?

Review Words of the Week

10 minutes - Classroom Instruction

What makes you want to yell at the referee on TV when watching a game?

Is it because you think he is biased against your team?

Lesson #100 Week 23

Page 7: €¦  · Web viewLesson #97 Week 23. Lesson: #97 Monday, February 2, 2015. Grade: English 8. Title: Short Story “Charles” Due Dates: Charles Exam Tuesday, February 3, 2014

Why do some people say they watch Fox News instead of CNN?

Facts are

■ Information known for certain to have happened.

■ Information known for certain to be true.

■ Information known for certain to exist.

Opinions, on the other hand, are

■ Information believed to have happened.

■ Information believed to be true.

■ Information believed to exist.

Reasonable opinions are those based on fact; and indeed, that is what much of writing is: the writer's opinion (an assertion about his or her subject) supported by facts or other evidence.

Example: “James is a terrific boss.” This could be a good topic sentence since it is an asser-tion about the subject “James.” It is after all debatable.

It could be turned into a paragraph with the following supporting details or facts to back it up.

James is a terrific boss. He always asks us how we're doing. He lets us leave early or come in late when we have to take care of our children. He always gives holiday bonuses. And he offers tuition reimbursement for any course, even if it has nothing to do with our positions.

When reading news articles or academic materials, you need to distinguish between fact and opinion. Here a tip:

Sometimes “facts” are incorrect or skewed because they were obtained from invalid or biased sources (Like maybe a referee call). When reading informative text, it is im-portant to the author’s credentials and his sources. When you are not sure, ask if the statement could be debated?

5 Minutes: Guided Practice

Practice 1 :

Try these questions on the following statements. Read them carefully, and then write F in if the statement is a fact and 0 if it is an opinion.

1. The Academy Awards honor the film industry.

Page 8: €¦  · Web viewLesson #97 Week 23. Lesson: #97 Monday, February 2, 2015. Grade: English 8. Title: Short Story “Charles” Due Dates: Charles Exam Tuesday, February 3, 2014

2. The Academy Awards are always fun to watch.

3. More independent films should win Academy Awards.

4. The Academy Awards are an annual event.

5. Best Director is the most interesting Academy Award category.

15 Minutes: Independent Practice - Review answers in class when students are fin-ished.

Practice 2

Now try the same exercise with a complete paragraph. Highlight the facts and use a different color to highlight the opinions. Be careful, you may find a fact and opinion together in the same sentence.

You may use many different ways to invest your money to provide for a financially secure future. Many people invest in stocks and bonds, but I think good old-fash-ioned savings accounts and CDs (certificates of deposit) are the best way to invest your hard-earned money. Stocks and bonds are often risky, and it doesn't make sense to risk losing the money you've worked so hard for. True, regular savings ac-counts and CDs can't make you a millionaire overnight or provide the high returns some stock investments do. But by the same token, savings accounts and CDs are fully insured and provide steady, secure interest on your money. That makes a whole lot of cents.

Practice 3

Rewrite each fact below as an opinion.

Example: Mrs. Caple is a teacher. Mrs. Caple is a great teacher.

1. Healthcare costs have risen over the last several years.

2. The 22nd Amendment of the United States Constitution establishes a two-term limit for the presidency.

3. More than 58,000 Americans lost their lives in the Vietnam War.

4. The Motion Picture Association of America's R (Restricted) rating requires anyone un-der 17 to be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

5. Use of performance-enhancing drugs is strictly prohibited in both amateur and profes-sional sports.

Apple expected to ring up monster results with iPhone sales

Jon Swartz, USA TODAY 12:19 p.m. EST January 27, 2015

apple SAN FRANCISCO --

Apple is expected to ring up record quarterly results from, what else?, iPhone sales.

Apple's first-quarter revenue, to be reported after markets close today, should easily surpass analyst estimates of $67.3 billion and top earnings estimates of $2.59 a share.

Record iPhone sales should highlight the results. A Fortune panel of 30 Apple analysts expects iPhone sales of 66.5 million, up 30% from the same quarter a year ago.

Apple's greatest asset could pose a potential problem. Some 65% of its quarter rev-enue is gleaned from iPhone sales – and nearly every handset maker has even-tually encountered trouble because of ever-shifting consumer tastes and an expanding competitive landscape, says Colin Gillis, research director at BGC Financial.

The sales momentum should continue into the spring, with the expected launch of Ap-ple Watch.

Gillis expects Apple to sell 30 million Apple Watches in the first four quarters they are available. By comparison, 19.4 million iPads and 11.6 million iPhones were sold in their first years, respectively.
