The Baade Blurb

March was a blur of activity and fun. The month kicked off with two anti-bullying presentations, St. Patrick‘s Day celebrations, a movie night, The Elimination of Racism Day, Parent-Teacher Interviews, the annual Ski trip, and our noteworthy Carnival.

I would like to take this opportunity to say farewell to the Alina family. KC and Jacob will be going to school in Humboldt. We wish them the best in their new adventure. In addition, congratulations to Rikee Rowan of Watrous who accepted the newly created 0.67 Educational Assistant position. She will be working in the Grade 1/2 classroom.

Grades 7-12 travelled to Leroy to participate in a multi-school Anti-bullying Pink Day. Students heard a variety of speakers, ate lunch, and visited with other students. A week later, grades 1-8 were entertained by Ryan Laird of Red Deer with a message about resilience and positivity. He also entertained the students with some of his own music.

This was followed up with International Elimination of Racism Day. Students participated in presentations about racism and enjoyed ”Celebrating Everyone” cake. Special thanks to social studies teachers Mr. Heppner. Mr.Engele, and Ms. Danyluk for preparing the presentations. It is important to educate our students about other cultures, differences, and to have compassion for others in our global society.

Thank you to all parents and students who attended Parent-Teacher Interviews. Communication is essential for teachers and parents to work together to help students.

The Ski trip to Table Mountain was once again a success. Our numbers dropped this year, so grades 11 and 12 had regular classes. Thanks to our parent volunteers, Ryan Kelly and Jim Crittenden, who accompanied the students on this trip.

Finally, the best event ever – the Imperial School Carnival! Thank you to the SCC for helping the staff, to the people who donated baking, to the community for supporting the activity, and to the students for their laughter and enthusiasm. It continues to be a great event to bring our communities together!

April began with our Easter Break, and the tragic news of the bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos. In honor of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team, the School hosted a Floor Hockey Marathon on April 23 with the funds going to STARS Air Ambulance. It was amazing, and we raised $5000!! A special thank you to the Imperial Sabres senior hockey team for competing in our tournament, and to Maguire Scheidt who dropped the puck to start the game. Maguire plays hockey in Humboldt with the Midget AA Humboldt Broncos. To add to the excitement, Mr. Regan Kelly donated a signed Sydney Crosby World Cup of Hockey jersey to be raffled, with funds going to our local first responders (Imperial and District Ambulance). Thank you for your generous donation to the School, Regan! In addition, I would like to thank the students, parents, families, and community members for their lavish donations. This event made me so proud of our small school!

The Easter Break also brought some renovations in our school. Now that we are locking all doors except the front doors for safety reasons, the Division is trying to move secretary and principal offices near the front doors so we know who is entering the building. We were fortunate that our move was economical, as few renovations were required. As a result, the process happened immediately.

Congratulations to the grade 3-8 classes who attended the Music Festival and superbly performed their choral speaking pieces. Also, kudos to the grade 5-8 bands and the Senior Band for their stellar performances. Thank you to Mr. Vlad Osatiuk, Mrs. VanDamme, Ms. Danyluk, and Mr. Engele for committing to this opportunity for our students.

A big congratulation is in order to Samantha Saelhof and Eric Madland who were married on March 31. Mrs. Madland teaches kindergarten in our school. Welcome to the world of marriage, Sam and Eric!

The Reading Bee hosted by the SCC was a huge success. Thanks to Mrs. Tracy Federspiel for organizing it, and to various businesses and individuals who donated prizes or money. There will be more information about the winners in the next newsletter.

Thank you to the people who came out for the Track meeting or called and offered equipment or services. It gave the SCC and the School a direction to move forth on the track. Everyone’s generous offer of equipment, labour, and/or materials is appreciated.

The SRC kicked off their final fundraiser this month. Mom’s Pantry order forms were distributed at the beginning of the week, and it will be available until May 14. This venture will raise funds for students to attend the Student Leadership Conference in the fall and to donate toward new jerseys. If you need more information, please contact SRC supervisors, Mrs. Baade or Mrs. Madland.

Please join us next month for our Literacy Luncheon and Literacy Fair on May 4. Students will be displaying literacy projects in the gym from 12:30 - 2:30 pm, and a presentation at 12:30 will be available in the School library called “Supporting your Elementary Student in Reading”. Horizon School Division’s Literacy Coach, Ms. Katherine Oviatt, will be presenting for about 30 minutes. In addition to the literacy portion, the School will be hosting a luncheon from 12-12:30 pm for all families and community members. We will be sending home donation requests soon. The Staff will supply cookies, coffee, tea, and juice. Hope to see you there!

Mrs. Carol Baade

Sr. Girls Basketball

The Senior Girls finished off their season with a tough loss against Southey at Regionals. However, the girls had a lot of fun and fulfilled their season goals! It was a privilege being their coach, and I look forward to seeing what they can accomplish next year.

Mrs. Samantha Madland

Jr. Jr. Badminton

I am excited to announce that Jr. Jr. Badminton is in full swing! We practice every Monday from 3:30-5:00. We held our first practice on Monday, March 12. Ten students are currently in this Developmental Program. The grade 4 and 5 students that participate are showing some great progress. We work on our serves, stance, and techniques. Keep up the good job boys and girls. I look forward to seeing each one of these athletes grow in this sport.

Mrs. Amber Metz

Jr. Badminton

The Junior Badminton team has spent the past five weeks practising and participating in league games. As a team, we have participated in three league events this season, and have fared very well in each match. On April 26 and April 27, students will be competing in Pre-Districts. Imperial will be represented by Kayden Freeman and Ryan Nelson in boys singles, Jensen Kelly in girls singles, Ricky Martens and Trevor Mooney in boys doubles, Harrison Mooney and Jamison Langlois in mixed doubles, Rylee Van Damme and Frances Dy in girls doubles, and finally Jody Williams and Rylan Freeman in boys doubles. Great work this season.

Sr. Badminton

Our team this year consists of Lexie Nelson (singles), Kenzie VanDamme (singles), Garet Poitras (singles), Poly Cordova (singles), Kayden Freeman (singles), Jonathan Nelson (singles), and Jenna Joa and Jacelyn Kelly as our only doubles players. The athletes have gone to Raymore, Lanigan, as well as hosted two league competitions this year.

Players have shown great improvement from day one, which is really good to see. We have a lot of potential this year to go far in our program, and I’m excited about where these players can go. I have been more than impressed with the drive some of these athletes have this year.

Our team will be headed out on April 24 and 25 for Pre-Districts. Good luck everyone.

Mr. Joel Heppner

SRC News

In the month of March and April, we had a lot of events. We had a delicious Taco Tuesday lunch on March 6. A big thank you goes out to Mr. Gordon Gustafson for donating all of the meat for the sale. On Thursday, March 15, we held a family movie night and watched Despicable Me 3. Everyone had loads of fun! Friday, March 16 everyone wore green to show Saint Patrick’s Day spirit. There were vanilla and mint shamrock shakes for sale. On Tuesday, March 27 we had our Baba’s perogies delivered to everyone who ordered them, and I hope that they were absolutely delicious! On April 12, the students wore jerseys to honour the Humboldt Broncos and collect Survivor points. Survivor will be rescheduled due to the great success of the Hockey Marathon. Mom’s Pantry orders have been sent to every family.

Coming in May, we are going to have our high school Wake-a-thon. We are planning a bunch of fun activities that will be sure to keep everyone awake and having a blast!

Vice President-Garet Poitras

Ski Trip

This year the students again went to Table Mountain Regional Park for their awesome Ski Trip. It was a successful trip filled with excitement and fun. On the hill a lot of us stayed together as a group and that made a lot of the day full of surprises. “It was fun hanging out as a big group,” said Mr. Hart. It was great to see students trying new things, whether that was carving, jumping or doing tricks. It looked like everyone had a lot of fun.

I just want to give a huge thank you to Dwayne Cruise who donated the meat for the chili, and Imperial Coop for donating the buns for the hotdogs. We could not have had a successful Hotdog and Chili sale without you, thank you so much for your generosity!

9-12 Field Trip to Saskatoon

On Tuesday, April 17, 2018, our grade 9-12’s participated in a field trip to Saskatoon. Our first stop was at the YMCA to play racquetball. Tanner Prentice, who is 6th in Canada for racquetball, instructed the students on how to play. The students had a blast trying out the different equipment and checking out everything the YMCA facility has to offer! We then ventured on to the Broadway Theatre. At the theatre, we viewed Home is a Beautiful Word. This play was written by Joel Bernbaum. Joel travelled to Victoria, B.C. and interviewed over 500 people to create a portrait of homelessness. We heard from the housed, the homeless, and those who were “one pay cheque away” from the street. The play did a great job highlighting the complexities of homelessness. We would like to thank June Nelson for braving the stormy weather and for getting us home safe. Despite the snow and slushy driving conditions, we had a fantastic day in Saskatoon with the grade 9-12 students! Mr. Joel Heppner and Ms. Victoria Danyluk

Penny Ante Carnival

This year, we had our biannual Penny Ante Carnival on March 28. Events at the carnival included three bouncy houses, bean bag toss, mini-golf, fish pond, cake walk, royal flush, hockey shot, horse races, face painting, sucker pull, and an Easter egg hunt. One bouncy house was an obstacle course, one was a slide with basketball hoop, and the third was a bouncy castle! At the fish pond, players cast a line to catch a prize! The fish were sure biting that night! Players at the cake walk competed in a lively game of musical chairs. Winners were awarded with delicious cakes donated by members of the community! At the royal flush event players tried to throw a roll of toilet paper through a hanging toilet seat. Students took part in a life-sized game of horse race, moving on a track at the command of a dice. You could also try your luck at the sucker pull by pulling a sucker from a bucket. Depending on the colour of the bottom of your sucker, you could be awarded tickets. Players could use their tickets won at events to purchase prizes available at the prize store.

A canteen was open throughout the carnival providing food and refreshments to guests. The canteen offered hot dogs, taco in a bag, and perogies to the hungry carnival goers. For those wanting to satisfy their sweet tooth, they could indulge in cotton candy, ice cream, and various candy from the canteen.

On top of the traditional carnival events offered there were special events throughout the evening. A silent auction offering an assortment of items awarded to the highest bidder was held. The silent auction had items for carnival participants of all ages and interests! During the evening attendees had the opportunity to enter a draw to throw a pie in the face of our principal, Mrs. Baade. The lucky winner was Jensen Kelly, and to Mrs. Baade’s relief, Jensen’s toss of the whip cream pie was off the mark. Jensen made sure to fix her errant throw by rubbing the remaining pie in Mrs. Baade’s face!

We could not put on such a fantastic event without the help from many people. Thank you to the following people:

- Bryce McCall from AstroJump for the donation of a third bouncy castle. - Everyone who donated cakes for the cake walk.- Members of the community and the business community who donated to the prize table and silent auction.- Students who set up, worked at, and cleaned up carnival events.- All individuals who donated to the canteen or other aspects of the carnival.

We already can’t wait for the next carnival in 2020! Written by Imperial School Grade 5/6 class

Provincial Archery Tournament

On Friday, April 13, 2018, schools from all over Saskatchewan met in Melville to compete in the two day Provincial Archery Tournament. Coach Sarah Chamberlain-Brown took Chantelle Remlinger, Ken Roz Cabaraban, Katie Chamberlain Brown, and Jody Williams to the tournament. After an exciting afternoon of shooting targets, the students

Chantelle scored a total of 219 points, Katie shot a total of 197 points, Ken Roz shot a total of 176 points, and Jody scored 171 points. Ken Roz and Chantelle both placed in the top five in districts! Everyone had a fun day.

Choral Speaking

On Monday, April 16, the Grade 3-8 students attended Watrous & District’s 50 th Annual Music Festival. Each class prepared their pieces for several weeks, and it was easy to see that they were ready to entertain the audience. We were also treated to watching Jamison Langlois and a student from Watrous Elementary perform duologue poetry and Nokomis School’s choral speech entries. The Grade 3/4 Class gave a rollicking performance of If I Were Ruler of the World by Bill Dodds and When Tillie Ate the Chili by Jack Prelutsky. The Grade 5/6 Class wowed us by their amazing ability to recite a very difficult Casey at the Bat and the clever Smart by Shel Silverstein. The Grade 7/8’s performance of Crazy Dream by Shel Silverstein and Dad, Are We There Yet? by Paul Orshoski had us in stitches! The Sierra Stone, Imperial Award was given to the Grade 3/4 Class for their performances. Thank you so much to parents and grandparents that were able to attend this community event.

SCC News

It’s spring!!!

The Reading Bee is wrapping up. A huge shout out to Tracy Federspiel who dreamed up the format, organized the whole thing and collected all the sponsor money and prizes. This was a fun event and a terrific way to get our kids reading!

Last month the SCC sponsored a teacher appreciation lunch. Thanks to Imperial Family Restaurant for the delicious Chinese food! As usual our dedicated staff could not all sit down to enjoy it together – they are too busy working with our kids! In any case, lunch was enjoyed, and the staff know how much we value their work!

The Imperial SCC has been in discussion with the school staff regarding the replacement of jerseys for our sports teams. Most of our jersey sets are quite old and an update is needed. A few local businesses have expressed interest in sponsoring a set of team jerseys. This is a fantastic way to support our students and offers the sponsor some recognition for their generosity. If you or your business or group would be interested in sponsoring any number of jerseys or a team set, please contact the School.

The SCC has organized a pizza lunch for students this week. Thanks to Alesha Webster for putting this together, and thanks to TB’s in Watrous for giving us a deal on the pizza. It’s easier to learn on a full tummy, and sometimes you are just tired of sandwiches!

Each month, Imperial School’s Literacy Team will feature a “key” from the resource 7 Keys to Comprehension. Using the same terminology at home as is being used at school to talk about reading is a great way to support your child’s learning.

Featured “Key”: Imagery (Visualizing)

What does it mean? Good readers make mental pictures as they read or listen. Mental pictures are created by the author’s use of imagery, which is based on description and the senses (taste, touch, smell, sight, and hearing). This aids in comprehension by creating a more comprehensive reading experience and helps to retain what students have read.

Readers use imagery to enhance comprehension. Students must be able to:

Visualize independently while reading using a variety of different senses Identify key images from the reading that enhance understanding Identify key words or phrases that prompt mental pictures

How can I help at home?

Some ways you can encourage your child to use imagery strategies are to start asking questions:

1. What does this description make you feel?2. Read slowly and stop to ask sensory questions (What do you see, smell, hear, touch or taste when you

read those words?)3. Have your sensory images or “mind pictures” changed as you read the story?4. If you were going to make what you read into a movie, who would be acting it out? Where would you

film this movie?

"Sensory images are the cinema unfolding in your mind that makes reading three-dimensional.” (Adrienne Gear, 2016) As parents and caregivers, enjoy the special times you have reading with your child, and thank you for your support at home.
