Gavin and Grandad were fishing for mackerel from the harbor wall when the seal popped its head out of the water. For a moment Gavin thought it was a loose float bobbing about. Then he saw two big eyes. The seal's dark eyes laughed at Gavin.      Grandad hadn't seen the seal because he was putting his tackle away. The hooks they were using shined when the sun hit them. The harbor wasn't the best place to fish, but there wasn't time to go anywhere else between Gavin coming out of school and getting home to cook tea. Still, they'd been lucky that afternoon. Gavin had hooked into a half-size mackerel almost at once. Perhaps he should have thrown it back, but he'd kept it because they might not get anything else.     The ships in the harbor yawned in the lazy day. Gavin and Grandad could barely stay

awake themselves. The tide gurgled and burped against the side of their boat. Even the sun was covered up by a set of gray clouds.      Now Grandad picked up the half-size fish. Then the seal dived out of sight.     A few seconds later, the seal popped its head out of the water again. The mackerel's tail was sticking out of the corner of its mouth until the seal threw its head back and sort of gargled it down.     "You're welcome," said Gavin.     The seal blinked, as if it hadn't expected to be spoken to like that.     "See you soon," said Gavin. Meet Tony Beaver

One of the biggest heroes of West Virginia is a man named Tony Beaver. Long ago, Tony's family moved to the Appalachian Mountains. They built a log cabin on top of one of the wooded hills.     All of the Beaver children were big and healthy, but Tony was extra big. One day, Ma finally told him it was time for him to leave home and make it on his own. So Tony left. As he walked, he took big strides from one mountaintop to the next. In his travels, he came to Turtle Cove while Big Bill Simpson was having a wood-chopping contest. Tony decided to try wood-chopping.     On the ready signal, Tony brought his ax down so hard that it just broke that big hickory tree as if it were a matchstick. And that was the way Tony got into the lumbering business.     Tony perfected his skill so that he could cut down two trees with each swing! 10. Managing money is an important skill for adults. But how do adults learn to manage money? Some learned about money when they were children if their parents gave them an allowance.      An allowance gives children a chance to learn about earning, saving, and spending money. Parents can choose the best way to give the money to the child. Many parents have a set of chores that kids can complete for money. This system can teach kids the value of money if they have to work for it.     "I asked my son to clean up his room a million times," said one mother.
