FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK

Hello to all,

Wow!! I am not sure that we could have

accomplished much more than we did in the last few

weeks. A successful rummage sale, 2 days of Easter

Egg making, and our first annual, “Sweets for Sight”

event! They were each one a great success in and of

themselves. Altogether, they were an overwhelming

success!! I am so thankful for the staff, volunteers,

board, and consumer support we received for each

event.

We are currently looking forward to the Summer

Picnic on June 1, the Summer Trip on June 17-18, to

Kings Island, and the Newport Aquarium, and the

Summer Bash on July 12! I hope many of you join us

for each of these as well as our ongoing activities such

as the YMCA, Bingo, and Support Groups (If you aren’t

a member of a group and wish to be, give me a call).

Thanks again for all the support we receive from

you all. We are here to serve you. Please let us know

what we can do to accomplish this.

Until next month ..........

THERE ARE TWO PHOTOS WITH THIS ARTICLE. The

first, appearing on the uppermost corner of the left-

hand page is a portrait of Walls. She appears to be

seated with her torso turned slightly toward the

camera. She is wearing a black sweater over a floral

print blouse. She has below the chest brown hair, and

is slightly smiling. The background of the image is

totally black. The second photo appears at the bottom

left-hand corner at the end of the article. This photo

shown three employees of Starbucks as they are at

their coffee station at the “Sweets For Sight”. The

caption reads: “Starbucks (of the Huntington Mall), was

a generous vendor at the April 12th “Sweets For Sight”

fundraiser. The cheerful group of ladies made sure

everyone who wanted a cup, or sample of the

company’s coffee, was dutifully served.

(story with additional pictures are on page 10 (of the

print edition)).”

The GUIDE PAGE MAGAZINE’s “Narrator of the Month”,

for April 2019 was Cabell-Wayne’s VRT Assistant Zach

Davis!

Zach has been a Cabell-Wayne staff member for a

few years now. He was hired in as a transportation

team member, then last year, upon staff changes, he

was given the opportunity to grow into a new position

as Vision Rehabilitation Therapist Assistant. He is

responsible for assessments, and providing low vision

aids. He is attending OU Southern campus, and is on-

track for his BA degree.

Zach is also known for his success as a small

business owner. His “Delights By Davis”, has

appeared at many social and competitive events, and

offers a wide variety of treats.

Around the office, Zach is very helpful indeed.

Recently, during Jerry Crabtree’s illness, he was asked,

and whole-heartedly agreed to be a narrator for the

audio edition of the GUIDE PAGE MAGAZINE.

“I’ll help anyone any way I can”, he said.

“Narrating was totally out of my wheelhouse, but hey, it

was for the team!” he added.

The GUIDE PAGE MAGAZINE is published regularly

the fourth week of each month, and is available in a

variety of formats to suit the vision needs of anyone

who wishes to receive it. To be placed on the mailing

list, or for information regarding services, activities,

volunteering, or planned giving, please contact the

Services Division office at 304-522-6991. We’d love to

hear from you!

On the next page of the print edition is a wordsearch

with Cabell-WSayne events as its subject. This puzzle

will not be described in the braille, audio, email, or web-

text issues.

INAUGURAL EVENT A SWEET SUCCESS!

To say there was a good turnout for the inaugural

fundraiser, “Sweets For Sight”, is an understatement!

At times, one could hardly walk from table to table

because of the crowd, and all of the visitors seats were

filled! It was indeed, a glorious night!

Friday, April 12th was a cool, damp night. But it

never stopped vendors and over one-hundred patrons

from attending, and participating in the first-ever,

“Sweets For Sight”.

“This kind of turn out was more that I could have

possibly hoped for,” said Zach Davis, event organizer.

“We worked long and hard for over six months to put

this together,” he said. “And all that work paid off, big-

time!” he added.

Donations from New York to Nashville,

Buckhannan to Wayne, made the silent auction portion

of the event quite popular. Several items brought in

over $100 themselves.

Leading up to the event there was quite a bit of

promoting. Media-Marketing Manager Jerry Crabtree

and Zach Davis made an “infomercial” about the event,

which was placed on the agency website and Facebook

pages. Davis and event co-organizer Pam Cabell

appeared on local radio programs twice, the duo also

appeared on WSAZ’s, “First At Four”, taking with them

lots of samples, much to the delight of program hosts

Tim Irr and Susan Nicholas.

“We worked very hard to get the word out,” Davis

said. “Prior to our event I posted information about

each of our competiting vendors on our Facebook®

pages. I think that generated a lot of interest,” he said.

Competition judges were John Bowen of the DAWG

radio station, Taylor Eaton from WSAZ, and Janet

McCormick, owner of “Let’s Eat” - a small eatery

located in Heritage Station.

The winners of competition were:

BEST TASTE: Double Drizzle, for their peanut

butter brownie bottomed

cheesecake.

BEST DISPLAY: Sweet Street for their “ice cream

parlor”.

PEOPLE’s CHOICE: Dang Good Cinnamon Rolls &

Waffles.

Other competitors included:

Edgewood Summit

Lisa’s Jars of Love

Team Yummy-Stuff

Joanna Holbrook, (non-competitor)

Delights By Davis, (non-competitor)

Media partners were WSAZ, Kindred Communications,

and The Herald-Dispatch.

Our “Chef Hat” sponsors were: Starbucks, Big Sandy

Superstore, Day Trippin’ Adventures, and Pepsi.

“Apron” sponsors were: Kenneth Hicks, Attorney at

Law, Edgewood Summit, and Dutch Miller Kia.

THERE ARE ELEVEN PHOTOS WITH THIS ARTICLE.

Photos begin with the event logo at the top of the

leading article page. This logo features a stack of

assorted candy pieces on the right, a magnifier to the

left, with the words “Sweets For Sight” in an arch-like

arrangement within the circle where the glass would be.

Cabell-Wayne’s official logo is underneath the circle,

with the words, “Cabell-Wayne Association of the Blind

Services Division” in smaller print to the right of the

agency’s official logo. The next set of three photos

appear three pages after the article opening and show

the event judges with Pam Cabell appearing with each

of the three category winners> On the next page there

are six photos arranged in a two column, two photos

per row display. These pictures represent candid shots

of several of the vendors. The final photo is a large,

nearly full-page photo of Zach Davis. Davis is holding a

microphone, and his mouth is open as he appears to

have been talking when the photo was taken. Davis

also appears to be smiling, is wearing a navy blue t-

shirt with agency logo, and a lighter blue sports cap.

The caption on Davis’ photo reads, “We worked very

hard to make this event a success, and it grew beyond

our wildest dreams! Thank you to everyone involved!”

CD’s and DVD’s can hold a trememdous amount of data

- everything from pictures of Grandma, to movies of

that favorite family reunion.

As durable as the media is, discs can accidentally

become unusable. Here are a few things to keep in

mind when using your discs:

- Don't write on the disc.

- Avoid touching the shiny bottom - hold the disc by the

edges.

- If your disc gets smudges, use warm soapy water for

cleaning.

- Avoid wiping the disc with paper towels or tissues -

use a clean microfiber or 100% soft cotton cloth

instead.

- When wiping the disc, wipe across the disc, not in a

circular motion.

- Keep your discs in a dry, dimly lit area.

- Store your CDs and DVDs in their protective case or in

a non-scratching sleeve.

- Don't stack your discs on top of each other without

cases.

Hopefully these tips will help you get the most from

your CD’s and DVD’s!

EASILY NAVIGATING CWAB.org

Since the introduction of our newly redesigned

website: cwab.org, we have highlighted many of its

accessibility features. These features will greatly

enhance a blind or impaired user’s web experience.

Yes, we have offered this information before, but it

never hurts to take a second, or even a third look at the

accessibility widget, (the menu that allows the

activation of a variety of features which enhances

cwab.org).

When you first visit cwab.org you will be greeted

with a nice blue banner. You will see the words,

“Cabell-Wayne” in large white letters. You will also see

the agency logo, (in white), on the far left of the banner.

Look at the far RIGHT corner, you will see a small

circle with an eye and a line drawn diagonally through

it. This is called a, “widget”. If by chance you don’t

see the entire circle, (it may be “hidden”), hover your

mouse over it. The word, “Unhide”, will appear. Click

the word. The widget eye will now appear. (Likewise

you can hide the widget eye by placing your curser

over the widget eye and click “hide”.

To reveal the widget options, click on the eye. A

menu will appear. It is from this menu where you will

be able to proceed with customizing cwab.org to suit

your web experience.

The widget has two columns, each with four

options. There is a “reset all” button at the bottom.

Here we will offer a description of each option and

describe how that option effects the screen.

These options will be described in a counter-

clockwise manner beginning with the upper left button.

“KEYBOARD NAV”. Activating this option will allow

the user to use the UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT arrow keys

to navigate the page.

“CONTRAST”. There are four modes of contrast, each

mode changes the color scheme of the page to suit the

visitor’s viewing preference.

“DESATURATE”. Using this option will remove all

color schemes from the entire website.

“LEGIBLE FONTS”. Some website users require a

more readable font. Using this option will alternate

between fonts.

“READ PAGE”. Having a page reader can be most

advantageous to some visitors - especially the blind.

This option is most helpful when accessing the “By-

Laws” section of cwab.org. We must mention,

however, there is no “pause”.

“HIGHLIGHT LINKS”. By activating this option, all

clickable links on cwab.org will be highlighted. This

allows for easier location of links within the site, for

instance, finding a “text only” issue of the GUIDE

PAGE MAGAZINE.

“BIGGER TEXT”. As a general rule, the smallest text

size on cwab.org will be 14 point. If a visitor needs a

larger point font for better readability, this option will

allow the normal font to be enlarged up to four times its

normal size.

“BIG CURSOR”. For visitors who have difficulty with

the normal size cursor, this option will enable a large

cursor.

Finally, the “RESET ALL” option at the bottom of the

two columns will reset all applied options to normal. A

note here: any and all options set on cwab.org are for

THIS WEBSITE ONLY, and will NOT be available once

the user leaves our website. However, all options will

remain in place once the user returns to cwab.org.

We hope these descriptions will help all current, and

future visitors to cwab.org. If you have any difficulties

using cwab.org’s accessibility features, you are urged

to contact us for assistance.

For more information about Cabell-Wayne Association

of the Blind’s services, volunteering, or planned giving,

you are encouraged to call 304-522-6991.

THERE ARE TWO GRAPHICS WITH THIS ARTICLE. The

first, on the leading page, is a small screenshot of the

top of the agency’s website. The image features the

large blue box with the “Cabell-Wayne Association of

the Blind” introduction in white lettering. The agency

logo appears to the left in white, the website menu is

shown underneath. The second and final graphic

appears on the article’s second page, and is that of the

widget menu.

YOUR LASTING LEGACY

So, what is planned giving?

By definition, a planned gift is any major gift made

in lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall

financial and/or estate planning.

Planned giving is the most practical way to ensure

your personal and financial wishes are fulfilled after

you are gone.

Cabell-Wayne Association of the Blind has had the

good fortune to receive several such gifts. These

gifts will provide goods and services to the blind and

visually impaired of Cabell and Wayne Counties.

There are two ways to give: to the association, or

to the Services Division, which provides services to

people like you.

Cabell-Wayne Association of the Blind is more than

happy to discuss with you the many ways the agency

could benefit from your wishes. Contact the Services

Division office at 304-522-6991, and we will make an

appointment to meet with you to discuss your wishes.

GUIDE PAGE by Email: Click, Open, and Read!

requiring unique methods of distribution, all of which

are available at no cost to anyone who wishes to

roadblock to the blind and visually impaired.

Consumers are offered free transportation to work,

doctor’s appointments, shopping, and group activities.

Limited vision no longer means limited transportation.

ORIENTATION & MOBILITY – O&M’s goal is to train

consumers with techniques of safe, efficient travel both

in the home and into the community. Skills are taught

that are vital for independence, confidence and self-

satisfaction. Instruction is built around the goals and

needs of the student.

daily living enhances quality of life for the visually

impaired. Magnifiers and talking devices are available.
