OSTP KurzweilOSTP

Text-to-Speech

OSTP Audio Options

Currently there appears to be no reading speed or reading voice adjustments in OSTP. See to the right, Kurzweil 3000 audio options for customizing.

KurzweilAudio Options

To change Kurzweil audio options, the student clicks the “Audio Options” menu. An audio options dropdown appears to change the reading speed 60-540 WPM. Additional reading options available in Kurzweil: choice of reading voices, mode, units, and language reading.

OSTP Screen Zoom

To magnify the screen, the student can click on the magnifying glass

in the top center of the screen. To minimize, the student clicks the minus button to the left of the magnifying glass . To return to the default 100%, students click on the refresh button. (shown below).

To change the zoom in Kurzweil, click the Zoom in or Zoom out . Students can also choose a certain page size via the dropdown window.

OSTP Change Background Color

To change OSTP color options, the student clicks the symbol at the bottom left corner of the screen. A color settings tool window pops up for the student to click to display test in chosen color (shown below).

Background Color” .

OSTP Sketch and Highlight

In OSTP, students click on the marking tool in the bottom left of the screen. Marking tool choices appear such as a black/red/blue pen, highlighter and eraser . Student selects tool and can drag over the text to mark text. Window appears and gives a couple of color choices. To erase, student clicks remove highlight button . See below.

KurzweilSketch and Highlighter

In Kurzweil, students can select the highlighter in the left toolbar to have the marking tools appear, select the tool drag their mouse over the text to mark text.

Marking tools include 6 highlighters, 2 circle tools and a cross out tool. See below.

OSTP Guideline Tool

To use the guideline Tool, click the “abc” at the bottom left of the screen. The guideline tool will appear. Students can click and hold down mouse to move it. As well, they can click on the resize handle to adjust the number of lines shown in the guideline window.

KurzweilGuideline Tool (No Guideline tool)

Kurzweil does not include a guideline tool. However, Kurzweil highlights the words as it reads for audio visual aid in student focus.

OSTP Calculator

To use the calculator, student clicks on the calculator icon in the bottom right of the screen to choose basic, scientific or graphing calculator

To use the calculator, student clicks on the calculator icon in the left toolbar. Kurzweil includes scientific, statistics, standard and business calcuolator.

Kurzweil Test Prep and Formatting for Teachers

Teachers can import or scan anything into the program to form a Kurzweil file, as well as edit how it reads. Zoning: Used for changing reading order or not read certain parts of the test (Ex. when testing reading comprehension)

Teachers can click on zones to delete, then click the delete key on key board, double click zone to change reading order or mark it as silent zone.

Edit Underlying Text: Used when there are recognition errors or to add more information, such as describing a picture of diagram. The image is displayed at the top and the editable words are displayed at the bottom.

Kurzweil Customizing the Toolbar in Documents

Teachers can create customized toolbars to save to documents/tests. Below shows a sample toolbar that gives students some of the tools similar to ACT Aspire (1-Open, 2-Highlighter and eliminator tool, 3-Eraser, 4-Background Color “overlay”, 5-calculator. As well, magnify is always available in the top toolbar and reading options are located under Audio Options in the top left corner.

To edit the left toolbar, right click on a tool to 1) delete tools or 2) add tools in front or behind other tools. To save a custom toolbar you have created to your profile to use later, right click on a blank part of the left toolbar, click “Save Toolbar Set” and name the tool bar. The toolbar will then show up in the list when you right click over the left toolbar, then click “Load a Toolbar Set”. To save a toolbar in a document, see below section on Saving Lock Features and Password Protect document.

Teachers can lock features in documents to not be accessible or turned on during tests. This can be done by going to dropdown menu “Tools”, “Lock Features” and disabling the features.

The lock features can then be saved to the document by going to dropdown menu “File”, “Properties”, and selecting “Save Feature Locks in document” and any other properties you want to apply, such as “Save Toolbars in Document”. Teacher can password protect the document as well from here. NOTE: You may want to save an unlocked version of the test as well. Once you have locked features in the document, they cannot be unlocked.

NEW!!!! Schools now have the ability to lock multiple student profiles, vs locking the properties of the documents as an options with our Kurzweil 3000 Web License version. This is done once logged in at www.kurzweil3000.com, under “My Account”, “Users”, then click “Lock Features” to place checks in the boxes of the features you want to lock for students.

Students have access to a variety of supports from the “Reference” link in the top right corner.

Definitions, Synonym, Syllables, Picture supports Online Resources Includes search for Book, Magazine, Online Encyclopedias, and Language Translation

For language translation, students select the text, click the dropdown menu “Online”, and click “Translate” to translate from English to one of 80 languages. Kurzweil will read only 11 languages of the 80 languages it visually translates.
