Dear Family and Friends‘A Christian marriage isn’t just a big ceremony held in a church with nice flowers and everyone wearing fancy clothes and taking lots of pictures. Marriage is an act of faith between a man and a woman who are both fragile and limited, but courageous enough to follow Christ and seek to love each other as he loves them.’ Pope Francis

Thank you for being with us today to witness our sacred union as we become husband and wife.

As you know, both of us are very passionate about our Catholic faith and the Holy Mass is a central aspect of that. Very much like how there are rituals in our daily lives – set ways of greeting people, eating, responding to a text – likewise the Mass (which is our worship) has its rituals too.

While some of you will be very familiar with the Mass, it will be a mystery to most of you. While it is ritualistic, it is rich in meaning. We thought we would try to “de-mystify” it a bit by explaining some of it, so you get a better understanding of why we are doing what we are doing.

The basic outline of the Mass can be described as a meal (though in its essence is it not “just a meal”, as that would disparage what it actually is). When we gather for a meal, we sit and talk, move to the table, say grace, pass the food around, eat and drink, and finally part ways and go home. It can be said that the Mass follows a similar structure and can be broken down into 1) Gathering, 2) Storytelling, 3) Meal sharing and 4) Commissioning.

There is a lot of prayer, responses, singing, sitting, standing and kneeling, which we have highlighted in this booklet. We also want to make sure you feel comfortable, so feel free to participate as much or as little as you would like in our celebration today.

In order to respect the dignity of the ceremony, we ask that you please do not take any photos or videos during the ceremony, and that phones and other electronic devices are switched off. We have an amazing team of professional photographers and a videographer that will capture every moment. We invite you to relax and be fully present with us during this special time.

The Holy MassGATHERING

Coming together is at the heart of the Mass. The purpose of this is to bring us together as “one body of Christ”, ready to listen to the Word of God and break bread together.

Response: We invite you to join in with the Responses (R) that are highlighted in blue.

Sign of the Cross: The priest will ask us to begin with the sign of the cross (reminding us of Baptism) and will greet us, saying, “The Lord be with you.” You will hear this greeting frequently. It means many things. Like “good day” it can mean both “hello” and “good-bye.” It is both a wish (may the Lord be with you) and a profound statement of faith (as you assemble, the Lord is with you). The response to this greeting is always, “And with your spirit,” by which we return the hello, the good wishes, the statement of faith.

STORY TELLING – THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

When we gather at a friend’s home for a meal, we always begin with conversation, telling our stories. At Mass, we listen as readings from the Word of God are proclaimed. They are the stories of God’s people.

On Sundays, there are three readings from the Bible. The first reading is from the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament). Then a psalm is sang or read. The second reading will be from one of the letters of Paul or another apostle’s writing (New Testament). The third reading is taken from one of the four Gospels. The first and second readings usually relate to the Gospel and gives insight into what Jesus says or does in the Gospel reading.

For our Nuptial Mass today, we have specially selected readings that are meaningful for us in our marriage.

MEAL SHARING – THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

After storytelling, we move to the table. As at a meal in the home of a friend, we 1) set the table, 2) say grace and 3) share the food and drink. At Mass these ritual actions are found in the Liturgy of the Eucharist and are called 1) the Preparation of the Gifts, 2) the Eucharistic Prayer and 3) the Communion Rite.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith as Catholics. It is where special prayers are said that transform the communion bread and wine into the body, blood, soul and divinity of the risen and glorified Jesus Christ, in remembrance of Christ’s Passover supper. This is a mystery of our faith.

The Eucharistic Prayer: This prayer brings us to the very center of the Mass and the heart of our faith. During this prayer, we recall the central event in our history, Jesus Christ, and in particular the Last Supper. We recall His passion, death and resurrection. We also remember the wonderful saving acts God has done for us in the past, and petition God to continue those deeds in the present. We pray that we may become one body, one spirit in Christ.

Communion: As God fed our ancestors in the desert on their pilgrimage, so God gives us food for our journey. During this we usually sing a hymn which unites our voices, minds and thoughts, as the Body and Blood of Christ unites our bodies.

FIRST READING Tobit 8:4b-8 Francis Emmanuel, Uncle of the Groom

A Reading from the Book of Tobit

On their wedding night Tobiah arose from bed and said to his wife, “Sister, get up. Let us pray and beg our Lord to have mercy on us and to grant us deliverance.” Sarah got up, and they started to pray and beg that deliverance might be theirs.

They began with these words:

“Blessed are you, O God of our fathers; praised be your name forever and ever.Let the heavens and all your creation praise you forever.

You made Adam and you gave him his wife Eve to be his help and support;and from these two the human race descended.

You said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; let us make him a partner like himself.’

Now, Lord, you know that I take this wife of mine not because of lust, but for a noble purpose. Call down your mercy on me and on her, and allow us to live together to a happy old age.”

They said together, “Amen, amen.”

The Word of the Lord.R: Thanks be to God

Psalm 103 Gita Smith, Aunt of the Bride

Response:

Bless the Lord, O my soul; all my being bless God’s name.Bless the Lord, O my soul; forget not all God’s blessings. Response

The Lord is gracious and merciful, show to anger, full of kindness.God is good to all creation, full of compassion. Response

The goodness of God is from age to age, blessing those who choose to love. And justice toward God’s children; on all who keep the covenant. Response

SECOND READING Corinthians: 12:31-13:8 Anna Wong, Friend of the Bride

A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians

Be ambitious for the higher gifts. And I am going to show you a way that is better than any of them.

If I have all the eloquence of men or of angels, but speak without love, I am simply a gong booming or a cymbal clashing.

If I have the gift of prophecy, understanding all the mysteries there are, and knowing everything, and if I have faith in all its fullness, to move mountains, but without love, then I am nothing at all.

7

Page 8: €¦ · Web viewcelebrating the union of. Maria Smith & Jude Emmanuel. in the sacrament of. holy matrimony. Saturday, 6 January 2018. The Cathedral of …

If I give away all that I possess, piece by piece, and even if I let them take my body to burn it, but am without love, it will do me no good whatever.Love is always patient, and kind; it is never jealous;Love is never boastful or conceited; it is never rude or selfish; It does not take offence, and is not resentful.

Love takes no pleasure in other peoples’ sins but delights in the truth; It is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes.

Love does not come to an end.

The Word of the Lord.R: Thanks be to God

John 2:1-12

Priest: The Lord be with you.R: And with your spirit.Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.R: Glory to You, O Lord.

On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.

When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”  And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.

Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.

And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.

When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”

Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
