Communities Environment ProgramThe environment belongs to us all and Australians want to do their bit to protect it.Over the years, we’ve seen what our local communities have to offer when it comes to caring for our environment and conserving our heritage. Around the nation, local communities are doing great work to conserve and nurture our land, our rivers, our coasts and oceans, and all the species they support. Our local communities know their local environments better than most, and they have the knowledge and the passion to take care of our beautiful places and the unique wildlife within them. The Australian Government has a long and successful history of working with local community groups to deliver clear and measurable benefits to our environment and our communities.Investing in cleaner and greener communitiesThe Australian Government will invest more than $22 million in 2019-20 to deliver a wide range of on-ground projects that conserve, protect and sustainably manage our environment.Under the Communities Environment Program, each federal electorate can receive up to $150,000 in grant funding for small-scale, community-led projects nominated by the local Member of Parliament in consultation with the community will focus on environmental priorities such as:

waste and litter reduction protecting native animals, including our threatened species addressing weeds and pest animals restoring and improving coasts, wetlands, riverbanks and waterways greening parks and urban areas.

This program aims to support the environmental priorities of local community and environment groups in their regions and neighbourhoods. It aims to not only recover and strengthen our environment, but also to build and strengthen our communities. Each electorate can receive funding for up to 20 projects, with the minimum grant amount being $2500 and the maximum grant amount set at $20,000. And sitting Members of Parliament will consult with their community to identify potential projects for their respective electorates.Who is eligible for funding?A broad range of organisations will be eligible to put forward projects to their local Member of Parliament. This includes community clubs (including Lions clubs, rotary clubs, sports clubs), not-for-profit organisations such as Indigenous organisations, Landcare groups (including bushcare, coastcare, ‘friends of’ groups), schools and other community and conservation groups.Local governing bodies as defined by the Local Government (Financial Assistance) Act 1995 will also be eligible to receive funding.Individuals and state or territory government departments will not be eligible for funding.TimingCommunity groups can contact their local member of parliament with their project ideas. Local members can consult with community groups about environment projects in their electorates ahead of the program opening. Expressions of Interest close April 30.

National Landcare Program: Smart Farming Partnerships Round 2  The Australian Government is inviting applications for projects to deliver services under the National Landcare Program - Smart Farming Partnerships Round 2. Projects are expected to commence before the end of 2019 and be complete by 30 April 2023.

The purpose of Smart Farming Partnerships is to foster sustainable natural resource management innovation. Smart Farming Partnerships deliver against the Australian Government’s policy of using innovation to cultivate more sustainable, productive and profitable agriculture, forestry, fishing and aquaculture industries; protect Australia’s biodiversity; protect and improve the condition of natural resources (in particular on-farm soils, water and vegetation); and assist Australia to meet its national and international obligations. Applications close at 11:00 pm AEST on 17 May 2019.

My Community Project will enable individuals to put forward ideas for projects in their area, and a public vote will show which projects have the most community support to receive funding. Successful projects will receive funding between $20,000 and $200,000.

People can nominate projects together with the support of a local organisation as the project sponsor. Local councils, community groups and other organisations can sponsor projects – maybe you or someone else in your organisation has a project idea that the organisation is willing to sponsor. Upper Lachlan Shire Council may also be approached by people within your community to support their ideas. Some examples of projects that could be funded include playgrounds, community transport services, public gardens, upgrades to local sporting or community facilities, public art, cultural festivals, programs for youth and health initiatives.

Project applications open on 2 April 2019 for six weeks, closing on 15 May.

The public vote will be open for four weeks from 15 July to 15 August. The projects with the most support in the community vote will be funded.

To raise awareness of My Community Project in your local area and give people the best chance to get involved, we’ve provided website and Facebook tiles, a DL flyer and an A3 poster for you to use. You can download these items here.

The program guidelines and fact sheets together with more information about the program is available at nsw.gov.au/mycommunityproject .

My Community Project is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions. I encourage you and others in your community to start thinking about project ideas to be ready when applications open on 2 April.

Grants to generate new Indigenous Protected AreasMedia release18 February 2019

The Government will invest more than $12 million to establish new Indigenous Protected Areas across the country, building on our commitment to strengthen Indigenous

employment in remote communities.

The Coalition has increased the number of dedicated IPAs to 75 since coming to office, putting the management of 67 million hectares of land into the hands of Traditional Owners.

Today’s announcement stands in addition to the $87.8 million from the Indigenous Advancement Strategy supporting existing IPA projects over five years from 2018-19 to 2022-23.

Indigenous Protected Areas support First Australians to work on land and sea country, connecting with country and culture while improving environmental conservation and promoting Indigenous employment.

They also encourage the intergenerational sharing of knowledge, the maintenance and reinvigoration of language and traditional culture, and the opportunity for Indigenous rangers to mentor young people in their communities.

IPAs form a vital part of the National Reserve System, comprising 44 per cent of the network of formally-recognised parks, reserves and protected areas across Australia.

Combined with Indigenous Rangers, these programs employ more than 2900 First Australians across regional and remote Australia.

This Government’s investment, committed through the national landcare Program, will help ensure these outcomes are secured into the future by combining traditional knowledge with western science.

Each Indigenous Protected Area project starts with a consultation stage involving Indigenous-led discussion and planning process amongst Traditional Owners.

Following the consultation stage, Traditional Owners can choose to formally dedicate their land, or land and sea, as an Indigenous Protected Area under the National Reserve System.

The $12.51 million Competitive Grant Round is open until 30 April 2019. Grant guidelines and further information on how to apply is available on the Government’s GrantConnect website at: www.grants.gov.au.

Over the past decade, the Prize’s annual awards have produced 76 winners who, directly and indirectly, have positively impacted over 318 million lives. In this time, the Prize has also sought to encourage and inspire others to adopt sustainable and human development practices around the world.

From 2019 awards, the Prize’s five categories are: Health, Food, Energy, Water and Global High Schools. The adoption of the new categories aligns the Prize more closely with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and the UAE government’s National Agenda 2021.

For the 2020 awards, submit your entry before May 30, 2019, and join a growing community of innovators who are realising the possibilities for a sustainable future.
