Growing Disciples for the 21st Century

DECEMBER 2018

Dear members and friends,

Advent marks the beginning of the new church year. What better way to start a new season on the liturgical calendar than to outline for you the themes of the four Sundays in Advent based on the lessons for each of these Sundays.

Below you will find a reprint of the summary on each week, taken from the Sundays and SeasonsELCA Resource and the lessons that correspond with each week, Read them before attending service on Sunday or read them if you cannot attend worship on any of the Sundays for Advent. Reading these lessons and the summary that corresponds with them is a way to more fully appreciate the though that went into the early chuch leaders creation of a liturgical year ( that begins with Advent.

ADVENT 1: Advent is about the “coming days.” God’s people have always lived in great expectation. The ancients anticipated a “righteous Branch to the spring up for David.” The Thessalonians awaited “The coming of our Lord Jesus with all the saints” Our Lord’s contemporaries hoped for the time “To stand before the Son of Man.” With them we eagerly expect and await the coming days, another Christmas celebration, a second coming, and the advent of our Lord in word and supper.

Readings and Psalm for Advent 1:

Jeremiah 33: 14-16Psalm 25: 1-101 Thessalonians 3: 9-13Luke 21: 25-36

ADVENT 2In Advent week two we hear of our God. John the baptizer’s voice in the wilderness may be the principal focus for the day Malachi’s prophecy could as easily herald the coming Lord Jesus as forerunner of the Lord of hosts. Finally all the baptized are called to participate in the sharing of the gospel. In so doing we prepare the way for the coming of the Lord and assist all flesh in capturing a vision of the “salvation of God’.Readings and Psalm for Advent 2:

Page 2: €¦  · Web viewAdvent week three we are reminded that the nearness of the Lord in prayer , in every circumstance, is cause for rejoicing. The coming of one “more powerful”

Malachi 3: 1-4Luke 1: 68-79Phillippians 1: 3-11Luke 3: 1-6

ADVENT 3

Advent week three we are reminded that the nearness of the Lord in prayer , in every circumstance, is cause for rejoicing. The coming of one “more powerful” than John, even with his winnowing fork in his hand, is good news- and cause for exultation- for us who are being saved. Great joy is the tone for the third Sunday of Advent.

Readings and Psalm for Advent 3:

Zephaniah 3: 14-20Isaiah 12: 2-6Philippians 4: 4-7Luke 3: 7-18

ADVENT 4

Cradle and cross are inextricably connected on the fourth Sunday of Advent. Between a lowly tribute to the little town of Bethlehem and the blessed virgin Mary’s magnificent song of praise, the letter to the Hebrews reminds us in no uncertain terms that Christ’s advent is for “the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

Readings and Psalm for Advent 4

Micah 5: 2-5aLuke 1: 46b-55Psalm 80: 1-7Hebrews 10: 5-10Luke 1: 39-55

Join us for worship, Sundays, as well as the Advent Workshop and Christmas Eve services.

Yours In Christ,

Pastor C. Andrew Carr

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR

Office Manager Nancy Klein Nursery: Corinne Sigai

GOOD NEWS AND THANK YOU!!!!

We have raised enough to pay for the replacement of 2 air conditioner units.

These funds were raised in several ways: ranging from allocations of interest from our Thrivent and Mission Investments funds, as well as spaghetti dinner, baseball game and generous individual contributions. All totalling $14,215.

YOUR NATIVITY IS NEEDED FOR HISTORY CABINET

NEW MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY A new membership directory is available in the narthex of the church. One per household please.

NEW AT ST. MARK’SSome changes have been made to our worship space. As you enter the double doors of the sanctuary and begin to walk toward the center aisle, you will notice that a pew has been moved a few feet back against the wall. This was done to make room for the Baptismal font. In keeping with the tradition making the Baptismal font visible, you will be able to see the font as you enter the sanctuary. On Sunday morning (unless a baptism is scheduled) the cover to the font will be removed, and water will be in the font. You are invited to dip your finger into the font and with a drop of water make the sign of the cross on your forehead as a way to remember your baptism.

Theologically speaking, Baptism is the disciple's entrance into church membership also known as the Body of Christ. All baptized members and all Christian congregations make up the Body of Christ. So as Martin Luther stated many times and in many sermons and lectures…a disciple of Christ 1should remember daily that he or she was Baptized. What better way to remember your baptism on Sunday morning than to see the Baptismal font as you enter the sanctuary. Also, the padded kneeler has been placed near the baptismal font for individual members to use.

NEED PASTORAL CARE? Does the Pastor Know? Did the Call go through? Was the Text received?

If you need pastoral care please contact the church office (leave a message) or call/text Pastor Carr (410-596-7216). Because of privacy laws that went into effect several years ago hospi-tals will not call church offices to inform the pastor that a member of his or her congregation is hospi-talized. Pastor Carr would rather receive two or three calls or texts than not to be informed that a member is in need of a visit.

A MEN’S BREAKFAST is held on the first Saturday of the month at 8am at Spargos in Manchester. This Month the breakfast will be on December 1st. COME JOIN US!
