Compliment PrizesBy Max Garmisa

Remember back to the October edition of 4YI when we told you about the compliment bulletin board? Well…last week we finally received all our compliments! Miss O’Donnell allowed us to choose from a couple different ideas. Our choices were popcorn and a movie, extra recess or ICE-POPS! We voted as a class and ice-pops beat extra recess by one vote. On Friday, Ms. O’Donnell got us colorful ice pops. We got to eat them while we took our spelling and vocab test, which made taking a test a little nicer! The ice pops were so good! We’ve already started over and received 2 compliments!

Lockdown DrillBy Zack Siegel

“Hello this is Mrs. Cohen…Manorhaven Elementry , we are having a lockdown drill.” That was the first thing we heard at the start of our lockdown drill. A lockdown drill is a drill when you practice being silent in your class because either there is a person that is not supposed to be there or an animal in the building. You have to be silent and against a wall away from the door and any windows. You are allowed to bring a book with you for the lockdown drill to help you to remain quiet. It is important that children (and the teacher) know not to respond to anyone at the door. When everything is clear, someone with a key to the classroom will open up the door to let us know that we’re safe.

The Things You May Not Know About Columbus DayWritten by: Michael Katsigiorgis

On October 14th, we didn’t have school. Do you know why? It was Columbus Day! Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer. He was born in 1451 and died in 1506. He took four trips to the Caribbean and South America between the years of 1492 and 1504. His first trip was his most famous trip and it started on August 3rd, 1492. He had three ships called the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. Columbus Day is not only celebrated in the United States. It is also celebrated in parts of Canada, Puerto Rico and in some cities in Italy and Spain.

Field Trip to Garvies Point

Written by: Ryann Brodsky

The entire fourth grade went on a field trip to Garvies Point. Garvies Point was a lot of fun. We learned about Native Americans and how they lived. The first person that presented to us was Bob. Bob told us about why Native Americans don’t wear shirts. They are made out of deer skin, and if they wear them in the summer, the leather gives them blisters. The second presentation was great too. We learned about a Native American masks and other artifacts. The mask was really weird looking, it made me laugh. The nose of the mask was crooked like it was broken. Then we went to the final presentation in the basement. She taught us how to make clay pots. We made some with our own hands, but we weren’t able to keep it. My mom bought the whole class necklaces with stone arrows on them so that we can remember this trip for a long time. I hope I can go again another time soon. If you’ve never been to Garvies Point, you should check it out.

Halloween Safety

Written by: Ben Schiff

When you go out Trick-or-Treating, the first thing you should think about is safety. One thing is to be sure to wear reflecting tape. You should wear that

people can see you late at night. You should also try to wear face paint instead of masks. You should wear face paint so that you can see without

having trouble. If you do wear a mask, be sure that you can see and breathe perfectly. You should also be under adult supervision while you Trick-or-Treat

and never go into strangers houses.

The Scholastic Book Fair

By Isabella Flores

There are a lot of books in the classroom, but there are so many more at the Scholastic Book Fair! There are fantasy books, fiction books, non-fiction books, adventure books and so many more! Most of the books were $4.99, but some were more expensive. At Manorhaven, we have the book fair two times each school year. The first book fair of the year is sometime in October the second one is the last month in the school year. The book fairs start on a Monday and last all week. Did you know that Scholastic Book Fairs help make about $75 million each year? They use that money to give to schools for projects and classroom materials. My favorite part of the book fair is the counter! On the counter are all the little toys. The counter is also were you purchase your books. Next time we have the book fair, you should consider buying a book there. Remember reading is awesome!

Manorhaven Milers

Written by: Michael Katsigiorgis & Isabella Flores

Check out our cool, new, BRIGHT ORANGE tee-shirts! On Monday, November 18th is when the Manorhaven Milers ran the Fun Run. The third, fourth and fifth grade students were able to run laps to earn ‘toe tokens’. Each grade had a separate time to run. The fourth grade ran for ten minutes.

While we were running, music was playing and the parents were there to cheer us on. Thanks Parents!

This year, we ran in the parking lot because the grass was too wet to run on. Luckily, no one got hit by a car! There was a table where we were able to take a break so that we could get a drink of water. At the end of the race, we all ran through the finish line and received our Manorhaven Milers bracelet and took a class picture. We all got to eat slices of oranges too!

The Fun Run was a successful day, and everyone was able to exercise.

The Talent Show from the Black Lagoon

A Book Review written by: Alexandra Papa

The Talent Show from the Black Lagoon is a very funny book. It is time for the school talent show! A boy is trying out for the school talent show and doesn’t know what to do. All of his friends know what they are doing, but he is at a lost. He has a lot of talents, but he doesn’t think they are good enough. He tells his mom about it, and she give s him horrible advice. He starts to practice the piano. The first lesson is a disaster, and his teacher wears a ton of perfume. He says that she is as big as a wrestler. The next morning was time for the talent show. Everyone fills the auditorium in the school. Eric tells his jokes and the kids love it. They applaud when Freddy reads his recipe and they loved Derrick’s hula-hooping. Mr. Smudge then rolls out the piano…Find out what happens next. I hope you’ll read The Talent Show from the Black Lagoon.

I Survived the Japanese Tsunami, 2011

Written by: Ben Schiff

I think you should read the book, I Survived the Japanese Tsunami, 2011. It is about a boy named Ben who goes to Japan to see his uncle. But when there is a

big rumbling sound and the house breaks down, Ben, his uncle, his mom, and his brother Harry have to survive a

deadly tsunami that is coming towards them. Luckily, Ben and his uncles Cat find their way to wrecked furniture that

is floating on the water. They make it to land where they find a gym where the survivors received care from doctors. Read

this book to find out if Ben ever gets to see his family again. This was a book that was full of suspense.

Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling4YI (For Your Information…)

Miss O’Donnell 2013-2014

A Book Review written by: Yoni Cohen

I would recommend the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling to anyone that is interested in witchcraft and wizardry. It is about a boy who lives with his aunt and uncle. Earlier in his

life, when Harry was a baby his parents died by a powerful and dark wizard named Voldemort. He was found by Professor Dumbeldore, and brought to his aunt and uncles

house. Unfortunately, they do not treat him well. Harry received a letter from Hogwarts inviting him to the school. Harry doesn’t know that magic is real, but when he turned 11 he was sure to find out. In this book Harry explores the world of magic, and encounters many secrets in the School of Hogwarts. Again, if you’re interested in magic, witchcraft

and wizardry…this is the series for you! I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

Movie Review…Parental Guidance

Written by: Jasper Abrahams

Parental Guidance is a very funny movie. It is rated PG. It is about a mom and a dad that goes on vacation and calls their responsible grandparents to watch their children. Unfortunately, they didn’t answer.

Luckily for the kids…they then called their funny, irresponsible grandparents to watch them while their parents were away. When the grandparents got to their house, the mom and dad left the kids with them. You will never believe all of the craziness that goes on while the parents are away.

You will love this movie. See it at your local theater now!

A Movie Review…Kindergarten Cop

Written by: Daniel Alexander

Kindergarten Cop is a very funny movie that I think everyone should see. In the movie, Mr. Kimbel is a police officer that is very tough. He brings his guns everywhere that he goes. Mr. Kimbel and his partner are working together to find a suspect in a case they are working on. His partner, Phoebe, a former school teacher, is assigned to go undercover as a kindergarten teacher at Astoria Elementary School. You won’t believe this, but Phoebe gets sick and Mr. Kimbel has to take on the job of Kindergarten teacher.

The kids are really scared of him because of his size and how loud he yells. All of the Kindergarten students are very funny. In one scene, Mr. Kimbel is playing a game to get to know the students. One little girl said that her father was the boss of a computer company, he has a mustache and a beard and that his head is sooooo big he can’t wear any hats. I found this part of the movie to be hysterical. .

This movie is entertaining and full of excitement. My family loves this movie, and I think that you will too. Check it out on Netflix or On Demand.

Because of Winn Dixie Written by: Ali Marks

I recommend this book Because of Winn Dixie because the author Kate DiCamillo is great. The plot is action packed, making you want to read more. I couldn’t stop! Another reason I recommend this this book is because when you finish this book you’re disappointed. Not because of the ending, but because you just want the author to write more and more! This book is great for kids because it will help them become a better reader and a better writer. This book is great for a read aloud or for an independent book. I think this book is really fun!

UNICEF

Written by: Ali Marks

At Manorhaven Elementary School we raise money for UNICEF. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) works in more than 190 countries and territories to save and improve children's lives, providing health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more.

We collect money for UNICEF when we go trick or treating. We bring the money back to the school and we drop it off in the office. The PTA brings it to a representative and he/she gives it to the people that are in need. This is a great thing to do because you are helping someone and you feel good about what you have done. Helping people that are in need is a great thing to do. We are all bucket fillers here at Manorhaven School.

Class Read-Aloud: Wonder

By: Karim El Shaer

Miss O’Donnell is reading aloud a book called Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The main character in the book is a boy named August (nicknamed Auggie). For the first few years of school, Auggie was homeschooled by his mother. Now, he is going to a public Middle School with other students. Auggie keeps getting stared at because of the way he looks. He has a facial deformity. Some of the students in his class are his friend, and others are not. We enjoy reading this book, and look forward to seeing what happens.
