Godfather 2 (1974)

Mis en scene:

In a film still, the setting sets the mood and sets the scene. In this film still from the Godfather 2 (1974) we can see Michael Corleone sitting on an arm chair staring into the camera with his legs crossed. He's inside what appears to be either a living room or office and he is totally isolated in the picture. The setting lets of a vibe of seriousness and makes him look quite well established. The lighting around Michael Corleone is very dim, we can see most the background is near enough invisible where as we can see Michael quite clearly. Michaels eyes are overshadowed and they look dark, we can't even see his left eye. The lighting in this scene shows the new godfather and head of the Corleone family as a dark and powerful figure. Michael Corleone is dressed up in a three-piece suit in this scene and he has combed back hair. His attire makes him appear very professional and serious and being the head of the mafia, he would have to appear as such.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

This is a film still from a scene in the movie pulp fiction. In this scene Mia Wallace mistakes heroin for cocaine, snorts too much and subsequently overdoses. Her nose begins bleeding and her mouth begins frothing. The lighting in this scene is quite high-key we can see her eyes slowly closing and the blood coming out of her nose along with the froth from her mouth. She's wearing a white shirt and there's a tiny drop of blood on the shirt. I think the bloodstain on her white shirt symbolises impurity and how she has become impure by doing hard drugs.

Fight Club (1999)

This is a film still from the movie fight club. We can see one of the leaders of the cult standing in front of a crowd standing in the spotlight. The light is shining really brightly upon Brad Pitts character, everyone else in the background has been dimmed out this shows his significance as a character. He has a cigarette in his mouth a bruised eye and a cut on his abdominal and upper right chest. This symbolises the violence that is part taken within the cult. Everyone in the scene is half dressed or undressed, they all have attained some sort of visible injury.

Casino Royale (2006)

This scene is set inside a poker room we see James Bond and his nemesis, Le Chiffre, sitting across the table from each other in the middle of a poker game. They are both staring each other dead in the eye this creates a feeling of great tension within the room. The lighting is very high – key everything is visible in the image, I think the directors might have made the lighting strong for this scene to make the expression on everyone's face and to make the scene more intense. Everyone at the table is dressed quite smart. Daniel Craig's character, James Bond, is dressed in white were as his opponent Le Chiffre is dressed in black, maybe they were dressed in white and black to represent the good and the bad. The black representing Le Chiffre as the bad guy and the white showing Bond as the good guy.

Rocky 1 (1976)

This is an iconic scene from the first Rocky film. Rocky Balboa is dressed in a fully grey tracksuit with his arms stretched out wide, standing at the top of what is known as "the rocky steps" in Philadelphia. The lighting in the scene is all natural, we can see the sun rising and the skyline of the city of Philadelphia in the horizon, the rising sun creates a really charismatic atmosphere within the film still.
