MISSIONS COMMITTEE REPORT

I. Disaster Relief : We sincerely thank the volunteers from our association who helped with Disaster Relief in North Carolina. Thanks also for your contributions to Disaster Relief at our Fall Meeting and through your churches. The needs continue with Disaster Relief so let us help by getting trained and then helping in relief efforts. We can also continue to give to Disaster Relief.

II. Rise Against Hunger : Let us continue to set aside quarters and dollars each day or each week for this great mission need. As we all give generously, we will have the biggest packaging project ever in the spring of 2019.

III. Hope for Appalachia : Members of our churches are encouraged to fill plastic boxes with specific items for needy children of Appalachia. Contact Rev. Woody Moore or the JRBA Office for lists of needed items and other information. Thanks for your great response in sending winter clothes to Appalachia.

IV. The Blue Ridge Food Services Distribution continues to need volunteers, so, please come to Crystal Cathedral in Dillwyn on the second and fourth Friday of each month at 9:30 AM to help give out food to hundreds of needy persons.

Sincere thanks for all of our mission work in 2018.In Christ’s Love,JimmyRev. Jimmy Dunn, Chair

In November, our Pastor’s Huddle met at the Annual BGAV in lieu of our traditional gathering. Four pastors as well as a pastor’s wife met for lunch in Richmond. It was nice to break from the norm, to fellowship, and to discuss the different happenings in the life of the BGAV. We are anticipating resuming with our Huddle at First Baptist Dillwyn on December 19 at noon. Pastors, hope to see you there.

Annual Meeting of the Baptist General Association of Virginia(Adapted from Blog posted on www.bgav.org on 11/15/18)

The Baptist General Association of Virginia held its 195th Annual Meeting from November 12 – November 14, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Glen Allen, VA. President George Fletcher presided througout the meeting. Six hundred seventy-six messengers attended along with 283 guests and

exhibitors for a total of 959 meeting participants. Messengers from Chestnut Grove (Rev. Roger Woody and his wife, Darlene), First Baptist Dillwyn (Rev. John Moxley, Rev. Jimmy Dunn and his wife, Jane), Fitzgerald Memorial (Riley Wilson, Geraldine Whaley, and Betty Newman), Goshen (Rev. Henry Enochs, Jr.), Mt. Zion (Rev. Woody Moore and his wife, Janice, Lois Arthur, and John and Brenda McAllister), and Mulberry Grove (Rev. Michael Khol, and Gwynn and Phyllis Tyler) attended all or part of the meeting.

Approximately 200 people attended breakout sessions related to missions on Monday afternoon. Over 300 gathered on Monday evening for a missions-themed dinner and a TED-talk-style discussion led by David Bailey of Arrabon, Elijah Brown of the Baptist World Alliance, and Valerie Carter of WMUV.

On Tuesday, the first session was called to order and began with spirited worship, led by BGAV’s Uptick Artists. Two BGAV preachers were the featured speakers that morning: Allen Jessee of Highlands Fellowship and Kristin Adkins Whitesides of First Baptist Church, Winchester. The morning

6session included reports from several committees and also featured the Treasurer’s report by David Washburn. Resolutions of appreciation were passed for Jim Ailor, J. Scott Burhoe, Wayne Hannah, and Fred Anderson. One of the highlights of the morning was John Upton’s Executive Director’s Report, during which he shared many of the ways the BGAV is “Living the Story”, which was the theme of this year’s meeting. He focused on how BGAV continues to live out its story, which began in 1823 for two main reasons: to focus on the local church, and to be “movemental” – to engage the local church in a movement of some kind – in order to help each local church accomplish more than what that church could do by itself.

Tuesday afternoon, meeting participants attended regional meetings. JRBA messengers and pastors attend the newly-formed Valley-Central Regional meeting, where Skip Wallace presided, along with Jeff Cranford. Jeff will be retiring at the end of February as Field Strategist of the Central Region and Skip will be covering both the Central and Valley regions of the state. Reasons for the change were discussed and individuals were presented and voted on from both regions as nominees to the BGAV Mission Council. Debby Ashley (Calvary), Rev. Perry Clore (Sharon), Rev. Henry B. Enochs, Jr (Goshen), and Rev. Bryan Painter (Oak Hill) were selected as nominees from the Central Region. The purpose of the Mission Council was discussed. Rev. Henry Enochs, Jr. led the group in a “round” of Jesus Loves Me and told about his call to the ministry and his experiences as a Bi-Vocational Minister and currently, as a full-time pastor. Another bi-vocational pastor also spoke of his experiences in the work place and how it grew into a full-time food ministry. Additional breakout sessions were held after the regional meetings.

Messengers gathered again on Tuesday evening for worship. The service began with a Memorial Service, honoring the people who had recently passed away after years of previous service in important roles within BGAV life. Two BGAV preachers were featured that evening: Valeria Carter (WMUV) and Chuck Warnock (Chatham Heights Baptist Church). Both gave inspiring and challenging messages.

On Wednesday morning, worship continued with the Uptick Artists and Keynote Speaker, Tod Bolsinger. He is a noted speaker, author, and Vice President/Assistant Professor at Fuller Theological Seminary. Bolsinger challenged meeting attendees to be open to new ways of doing things while retaining core values. Wednesday’s business session included the election of officers for 2019: Richard Martin (Huguenot Road Baptist, Richmond) as President, Rev. Adam Tyler (Grace Hills Baptist, Appomattox) as First Vice President, Jay Lawson (Warrenton Baptist, Warrenton) as Second Vice President, and Herbert Ponder (Mount Tabor Baptist, Richmond) as Secretary. During this session, the 2019 Budget of $9,100,000 was approved. (If you are interested in the breakdown of the BGAV budget, a copy is available at the JRBA Office.)

Bolsinger brought the final address after the business session. He stated, “When we are on mission, the church is at its best,” and he encouraged participants to embrace new ways to reach people for Christ in a changing world. “God is taking you into uncharted territory to transform you,” he said. His experiences and thoughts challenged traditional views of church, but his success proves that the church can only survive in this changing atmosphere by adapting to those changes while maintaining the Gospel message.

Next year’s meeting will beheld November 11 – 13, 2019, at Bonsack Baptist in Roanoke, VA. (The Baptist General Association of Virginia is a cooperative missions and ministry organization that consists of over 1,400 autonomous churches in the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as churches from Seoul, South Korea, Toronto, Ontario, the District of Columbia, and the states of California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana,Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia.)

JRBA CELEBRATES>>>

The Cedar church family presented Pastor Tommy and Margaret Armstrong with a gift of a two-night stay at a Bed and Breakfast in Williamsburg in recognition of Pastor Appreciation Day. On Sunday, October 28, Cedar welcomed into their church family Arnold Morris through a transfer of letter. Also, on Sunday, November 11, they celebrated the baptism of Jay Ownby, Fletcher Bowles, and L. J. Martin.

On November 11, Jones Chapel had Recognition of Veterans prior to preaching service, showing pictures of Veterans (memorial and remembrance). The children made a special poster thanking the Veterans for their service. The worship service was led by Dr. Elmer Towns, co-founder (along with Dr. Jerry Falwell) of Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. He preached on The Bible by Jesus.

Jones Chapel is saddened to lose a beloved, faithful member, Grace Martin. She passsed away suddenly just three months after her husband, Ray Martin. She is missed tremendously.

JRBA appreciates Tommy and Margaret Armstrong’s continuing help with getting the items donated for Hope Aglow Prison Ministries delivered to Garry Sims, Executive Director. Thank you, too, to the churches who continue to donate Sunday School literature and softback books for this important ministry. Just one more example of how we accomplish more together than any one church could do alone!
