CVS News:Please note there are no April Fool items in this newsletter. All the items, no matter how apparently ludicrous any might appear, are genuine, such as the following ...

Cat trapped for five days in charity shop sofaA cat spent five days trapped in a sofa donated to a charity shop before being found by the couple who bought it. The three-seater settee was given to St Luke's Hospice charity shop in Grays, Essex, by Pauline and Bill Lowe, both 66, from Corringham.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-26864309

Also, apologies.  In our Extra edition on 31 March 2014 we carried an item, at very short notice, from Adactus Housing under the mistaken impression the deadline was 2 April 2014. It was in fact 2 May 2014 and an updated item is covered in our routine Funding Opportunities section below.  Apologies for any inconvience.

Greenpeace slams ‘pie in sky’ figuresGreenpeace has hit out at claims that the shale gas industry could create a jobs boom in Lancashire. Cuadrilla chief executive Francis Egan said recently it was possible “tens of thousands” of jobs could be created if gas could be successfully extracted from under the Lancashire countryside. And he promised that his gas exploration company would do everything it could to recruit and offer work locally so the whole county would see the economic benefits. Today, Greenpeace national campaigners poured scorn on the projected figures, and said it could create as few as four jobs per well if fracking was approved in the county.

New claims in One Connect casePolice investigating financial irregularities at Lancashire County Council have declined to comment on claims they are probing allegations that data was intentionally wiped from computers belonging to a company linked to the inquiry. Housing benefit changes distress disabled people, say MPsChanges to housing benefit in England, Scotland and Wales are creating "financial hardship and distress" for disabled people, MPs have warned. The reduction of payments for social tenants deemed to have a larger home than they need have hit vulnerable people not intended as targets, the Work and Pensions Committee said. It said the rules were having a "severe" effect. But the government said its reforms were restoring fairness to the system.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-26843152

explains how they were achievedSince the #nomakeupselfie campaign raised £8m for Cancer Research, charities have been asking how they can replicate its success. Whilst it's undoubtedly a game changer, charity social media campaigns come in many flavours and there are lessons we can learn from them all. Mums to be My name is Lucy, and I'm a Researcher at a London based TV company called Cineflix Productions, where I'm working on a new project (w/t The Pregnancy Project), which is an observational documentary looking at mums-to–be who are experiencing unusual or challenging pregnancies and the extra-ordinary journey some mums-to-be go on as they prepare for the birth of their babies – in the UK and overseas.  We are looking to find a whole range of pregnant ladies in a variety of extraordinary situations, whether its a unique physical condition they have, a behavioural condition or an exceptional situation or lifestyle choice, we'd love to be able tell their stories and the every day challenges they face. As an example, some of the stories we would love to tell would be a pregnant lady who is an amputee, or visually impaired or paralysed.  We are in the very early stages of our research at the moment – and it would be great to get the word out there amongst your community to see if this might appeal to anyone. We have quite a big time frame on this so we are looking for anyone who is due to give birth from now up to November time. I have attached some info about the show – if you could add some info to your website / forum / twitter / Facebook pages that would be great. Any means you have to get the word

Neuroscientist claims ADHD is 'not a real disease'A leading neuroscientist has suggested that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is ''not a real disease''.  Dr Bruce D Perry claimed everyone exhibited a few symptoms of the condition at any given time - and that clinicians are prescribing drugs to treat it far too freely. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-26822979

E-cigarettes face curb in public places in WalesWales could be the first part of the UK to ban the use of electronic cigarettes in enclosed public places. Ministers say they are responding to concern that the devices - which can contain nicotine - normalise smoking and undermine the smoking ban. A minimum alcohol price of 50p per unit is also proposed in a white paper of ideas for public health legislation. Health Minister Mark Drakeford said the aim was to address some of the nation's major public health challenges.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-26837682

Government to move ahead with standardised cigarette packets

The government is moving forward with plans to ban branding on cigarette packs, Public Health Minister Jane Ellison told MPs. She said an independent report found it was "very likely to have a positive impact" on public health and stop children from starting to smoke. Ms Ellison said she was publishing draft regulations for a final, "short consultation". Labour accused Ms Ellison of kicking the issue "into the long grass".http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-26865693

Jogging can be harmful, scientists claimPeople who sweat and slave in extreme workouts in the hope that they will live longer may be unwittingly harming themselves, according to US researchers. Those do moderate exercise - amounting to two to three hours of running a week - live the longest, while people running a lot, and those who do none at all, both have shorter lifespans, Health Day reported. While scientists are uncertain as to why this is the case, they believe it could be linked to how jogging affects heart health.http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/jogging-can-be-harmful-scientists-claim-9233877.html

Seven-a-day fruit and veg 'saves lives'Eating seven or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day is healthier than the minimum five currently recommended and would prolong lives, experts say. A study of 65,226 men and women indicated the more fruit and vegetables people ate, the less likely they were to die - at any given age.  But the government says its "five-a-day" advice is sufficient and that many of us struggle to achieve even this. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-26818377

Stop forcing veg down our throatsDespite the failure of the five-a-day message, policymakers are determined to pursue an individual remedy for a collective illYou spend all that time wedging spinach under poached eggs and hiding carrot in Bolognese, only to find out you had it all wrong; five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables are not enough to assure good health. It should be seven. Some nutritionists believe it should actually be ten. Others think five was fine, and that the impact of changing the official advice is adverse enough to offset the extra vegetable consumption it may encourage in some people.http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/apr/02/forcing-veg-throat-five-a-day

Dementia diagnosis drive raises concernQuestions are being raised about the government's drive to increase dementia diagnosis rates in England. Fewer than half of the estimated 670,000 people with dementia have a

formal diagnosis, but ministers want to see this rise to two-thirds by 2015. But a GP writing in the British Medical Journal warned the push could lead to over-diagnosis. Meanwhile, the Alzheimer's Society said it was being undermined by the lack of support after diagnosis.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-26841774 Call for items Do you have any items of interest for the sector?
