VIRAL VS. BACTERIAL

Viral Infections are systemic: this means they involve many different parts of the body or more than one body system at the same time

i.e. a runny nose, sinus congestion, cough, body aches etc.

Viral infections cannot be cured (may be controlled)

WHAT IS A VIRAL INFECTION?

WHAT IS A BACTERIAL INFECTION?

• The classic symptoms of a bacterial infection are localized redness, heat, swelling and pain.

• Bacterial infections can be cured and/or controlled by antibiotics

STEP 4: NAME STI’S Write down as many STI’s as you can

think of. (Don’t be stupid)

STI’S TO FOCUS ON:

Cause: Bacterial Infection

Symptoms: itching/inflammation, but some individuals may have NO symptoms

Transmission: spread through intercourse with an infected person

Treatment/Cure: antibiotics

1. CHLAMYDIA

2. GENITAL HERPES Cause: Viral infection

Symptoms: appearance of a cold sore

Transmission: direct contact with open sores, usually during intercourse

Treatment/Cure: treatment only controls Herpes, it does not cure it

3. HUMAN PAPILLOMVIRUS(HPV) Cause: viral infection in the skin and

mucous membranes Symptoms: signs of genital/skin warts-

not painful Transmission: direct contact with

infected person Treatment/Cure: Surgery can remove

warts, but they will return. No overall cure.

4. GONORRHEA AKA “THE CLAP” Cause: bacterial infection

Symptoms: swollen glands, burning/pain- but some individuals may have NO symptoms

Transmission: spread through intercourse with an infected person

Treatment/Cure: Antibiotics

5. HEPATITIS (A, B OR C) Cause: Viral infection

Inflammation, yellowing of the eyes (jaundice), dark urine or loss of appetite

Transmission: spread through infected blood and saliva, also through infected mother during childbirth. Or through sharing of needles or razors.

Treatment/Cure: Vaccine and rest

6. ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS) Cause: damage to immune system by

the HIV virus

Symptoms: infections, fever, sweats, weakness or weight loss

Transmission: HIV spread from infected person through exchange of fluids

Treatment/Cure: Currently no cure

7. SYPHILLIS Cause: Bacterial Infection

Symptoms: sores, headaches, general aches and pains, sickness, loss of appetite, fever or no symptoms.

Transmission: direct contact with sores or can be passed on during birth to child.

Treatment/Cure: penicillin (antibiotics)
