My Ed Self Evaluation – Hellyer College

1-A valued careers program The Hellyer College (HC) school leadership team have supported the

ongoing implementation of My Education throughout the college. Judy Fahey (Principal) and the Senior Management team have supported professional learning opportunities for all staff (appendix A).

Amanda Muruste (Assistant Principal) and Michelle Summers (My Education Coordinator) are responsible for monitoring the aims and objectives of the ME plan. They ensure all staff are confident in delivering My Education in learning areas and Home Group programs. They have provided training to all staff and targeted support to individual teachers as required.

All staff participated in 5 My Education workshops and collectively developed a whole college scope and sequence and multiple lesson plans for Personal Pathway Planning and My Education. (Appendix B)

Hellyer College will implement professional learning for all staff regarding the new Personal Pathway Planning TASC course in 2018. This will be in conjunction with Megan Gunn.

Certificate IV in Career Development will be under taken by 8 Hellyer College staff in 2017/18 which will further build capacity of staff across the whole college.

My Education is embedded in the Support Group program, with a focus on differentiating pathways. For example, The High Achievers Program (180 students) focus on the university pathway, VET students have an industry focus and employment preparation. Other students undertake an exploration of a wide range of employment and personal career options.

Access to the My Education web page is available on the Hellyer College staff and student intranet page. This allows for staff and students to access ME Online at College or at home. Resources are also available on Fronter.

Staff and students will complete a survey focused on My Education at the end of 2017. This feedback will provided the Hellyer College My Education team with direction for the delivery and coordination of the program in 2018.

All students are required to complete a checklist each term, which includes their progress on their My Education process

Di Davies (Kuder) provided extensive training to the My Education team (10 staff members) that focused on navigating the ME Online program. This was then delivered to the whole staff as professional learning at the end of 2016 as a train the trainer model.

My Education implementation is discussed regularly in Support Group planning meetings (every second Wednesday 3:00pm – 4:00pm).

The school leadership ensures that there is a documented induction and succession plan for new staff on My Education.

Key personnel visit classrooms during ‘plan your own Home group’ lessons to ensure the implementation and completion of My Education activities, such as developing student’s E-Portfolios. This provides support and direction for the HC My Education plan.

Student destination data is collected on an annual basis and this informs Home Group planning for the coming year. In particular identifying the employers and post year 12 educational providers that we need to be partnering with.

2- Learning from career and labour market information All HC VET Programs are embedded with content on career

exploration, job possibilities and labour market expectations. In August 2017 Hellyer College will hold Nation Skills Week Distribution of Australian Jobs – Labour market booklet, 2016

Australian Jobs Guide as a resource for Home Group teachers to use with their classes. Labour market investigation of personal career and job availability through embedded course work and through Home Group.

Careers Advisor to run information sessions at: Support Group, Parent Evening and High School transition events.

Career and labour market information provided through daily school newsletter.

Jane Roper HC careers advisor continually advertises employment opportunities for students on Hellyer Colleges FB page: advertised electronically throughout the college.

3- Addressing the needs of each students The Careers program at HC challenges the stereotypical thinking

and raise aspirations of students. This is done by equitable delivery of career opportunities advertised on the daily news sheet as well as delivery by the Careers Advisor.

The Support Group program also ensures that academic pathways are being met-High Achievers program have access to university visits-university guest speakers, however, these opportunities are not limited to students involved in the High Achiever program. Guest speakers from the university attend whole school assemblies to ensure equitable delivery of information.

Guest speakers covering a wide range of tertiary, private and business institutions visit and provide key information (e.g. pop-up booths). Careers Speed dating conversations August 2017 – Becon

Advice to students and decisions made about their pathway are kept by Support Group teachers and students have access to these records.

Data for the Personal Pathway Program (marks and records) are kept by teachers.

Students have the opportunity to undertake work experience throughout the year.

VET students have work placement as part of their compulsory course work. Students are supported, visited and assessed when on work placement.

4- Embed Careers information in the curriculum Careers information is embedded in the Hellyer College Personal

Pathway Program throughout the year. There are a number of specific lessons dedicated to a career focus. E.g. – careers expo

Planned links to careers are consistently demonstrated in classroom practice and pastoral activities.

Work readiness, a newly accredited course delivered at HC in 2017 has been highly valued with around 18 students enrolled. Students

are engaged in a wide range of activities, which involve ongoing investigations of different careers and job opportunities.

5- Partnering with business to provide encounters with employers and employees

HC has and continues to present a Careers Expo for all students. Consisting of over 40 exhibiters across a wide range of employers and organisations. This year the Career Expo will be held Wednesday 29nd of August, 2017.

Many VET courses will have a variety of guest speakers throughout the year from industry.

The Hellyer College Careers Advisor oversees the ASbA program with over 30 students who are engaged and working in industry. Their programs and pastoral care are monitored carefully to ensure a work – study balance is maintained by Support Group teachers.

6- Experiences of changing work places Work Site Visits – VET industry Excursions and subject specific

excursions. VET Work Placement- All suitable VET students undertake work

placement. Work experience- Requested by students/parents and organised by

the Careers Advisor through the college: examples of work experience: Southern Prospects

ASbA- Active program where student are combining work/training and school – over 30 students on this program.

Taster Day – industry programs e.g. Engineering, Police, Pharmacy, TIS and Try a Skill.

Aboriginal- taster programs – through career transition program. Specific and strategic Guest speakers.

Pop up information booths at college – promoting work and industry e.g. Tassal Seafood industry.

7- Encounters with post year 12 educational providers Careers Advisor provides staff, students, parents and carers with the

latest information regarding post-school pathways. Enrichment Activities-all students involved in the High Achievers

program (180 students) visiting UTAS for 3 hours orientation- 17th May.

VET and school based apprentices are core components at Hellyer College.

All year 12 students are required to complete through the Support Group program a detailed Exit Survey to provide data for future planning.

Providers such as Tas TAFE are encouraged to visit and provide information on courses. This will happen in September 2017.

Personal guidance There are many people able to provide impartial advice, career

conversations and feedback to students at HC. These conversations assist students to develop and refine their individual pathway. Personnel include the HC youth worker, school psychologists, the Student Services team, Careers Advisor, Home Group teachers and individual subject teachers.

Extensive individual course counselling for students is provided in 3rd term for year 11 students. Teachers discuss with students their individual pathway plan and subject guidance is given to support individual student success and ensure career options can be met.
