WOMEN IN MOTOR SPORT

* Motor sport is a truly mixed sport; none of the FIA competitions are reserved exclusively for women and the regulations are not specifically adjusted for them.

* Since 1958, only five women in F1, one in WRC (Michèle Mouton) and one in Indycar (Danica Patrick), have written the history of women in motor sport….

* Behind the scenes there are many highly qualified women engineers, general directors, team managers, public relations officers….

4

THE “WOMEN IN MOTORSPORT COMMISSION” (WMC)

HISTORY In 2007, the FIM contacted the FIA to propose a collaboration within the “Lausanne Network for Women In Sport” (LNWIS).

That same year, the FIA joined the LNWIS.

On the 11th of December 2009, at the World Motor Sport Council, the project to create a “Women in Motorsport Commission” was voted under the presidency of Jean Todt. Since its creation, the WMC hasreceived a lot of support from the ASNs and the manufacturers

5

THE PRESIDENT OF THE “WMC”

Michèle Mouton

* First woman to win a round of the FIA World Rally Championship

* Went on to win a total of four World Championship rallies in the 1980s

* World Rally Vice-Champion in 1982

* Earned respect in a man’s world not only for her driving, but also for her personality and passion

6

COMPOSITION

25 members: > 1 President – Michèle Mouton> 1 Vice-President, Randa Nabulsi (JOR)> 1 FIA Commission Manager – Frédérique Trouvé> 15 ASNs’ representatives> 2 Drivers’ representatives

> 2 Teams’ representatives > 1 PR, Communication manager> 1 Manufacturers’ representative > 1 FIM representative

7

WHY DO WOMEN NEED SUCH A COMMISSION?

* To show that they are recognised by the highest body in charge of motor sport – to show that the door is open to women in all aspects of this sport, which is so “macho” (such as drivers, officials, positions in the Federation, etc.).

* To support and accompany the current drivers, encourage new participation of young drivers and officials, of women at all levels of motor sport, to highlight where women are in this sport (engineers ….) and strengthen their participation.

8

MISSIONS (1)

* To create a sports culture which facilitates and values the full participation of women in all aspects of motor sport.

* To set in place strategies and policies to promote the education and training of women in motor sport.

* To work with the FIA’s sporting and non-sporting commissions, ASNs and other key international Federations on joint sporting projects.

9

MISSIONS (2)

* To implement actions and events to allow the sharing of experiences and reflect on how to strengthen the participation of women (as drivers, officials and managers) in motor sport.

* To collaborate with other organisations on joint projects for women & sport.

* To take an active role in international forums and conferences devoted to the place of women in sport, and in the advances that can be made.

10

HOW DOES THE WMC WORK?

* 3 to 4 meetings per year + several specialised “Steering Committees”, one for each project, to take quick decisions on behalf of the WMC.

* Project to have a special part of the FIA website dedicated to this Commission and create a data base specially reserved for the women involved in this area.

* Survey concerning Women in Motor Sport launched in August 2010 (see enclosed maps).

* A national coordinator designated by each ASN with the FIA WMC in each country to liaise on this matter (47 national coordinators so far).

… IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF …

19

Michèle Mouton, President of the WMC:

“The mission of the Women in Motorsport Commission is to encourage, support and promote more women in all aspects of the sport, and our objective for the next three years is to concentrate on competition. Karting is the grassroots of motor sport. Awarding a trophy to a promi-sing young girl is a symbol of encouragement for more girls to persevere, not simply a reward for a purely feminine achievement; there is still a long way to reach the top in this highly competitive sport.”

WHAT THEY SAID

20

Jean Todt, President of the FIA:

“The FIA’s membership around the world comprises men and women; each has an identical part to play in sport. Like many international federations, we will support, promote and help advance the participation of women in motor sport to ensure equal opportunities at all levels.”

WHAT THEY SAID

21

By setting up this Commission, the FIA has shown that it recognises the progress achieved to date, and that it wishes to play a proactive role in its development and to conduct an appropriate policy in order to strengthen the place of women in all aspects of motor sport.
