DISAPPEARING WATER SOURCES: THE DEAD SEA (ISRAEL)

The Dead Sea, also called the Salt Sea, is a salt lake with Jordan to the east and Israel to the west.

Its surface and shores are 423 meters below sea level, Earth's lowest elevation on land.

Also it is so salty you can float easy.

Actually its 8.6 times saltier than the ocean.

Its mud is good for your skin. There are Dead Sea mud products that you can buy.

If the Dead Sea is drying, is it a problem?

Yes, because people use water that normally goes into the dead sea

Less water entering the Dead Sea and steady evaporation makes its level drop

Water in the ground also evaporates. If the ground falls in, it is called a sink hole.

Visual Drop in Dead Sea Level

Dropped from 1,296 ft below sea level in 1970 to 1,371 ft below sea level in 2006.

Decreased at a rate of 1 m (3 ft) per year
