LCC supports the four-lane sr520 bridge replacement alternative, which would pro-vide full shoulders and a bike/pedestrian path. LCC opposes the Pacific Street Interchange.

Community councils and associa-tions from Madison Park, University District, Broadmoor Homeowners’, Roanoke Park/Portage Bay, Raven-na-Bryant, Eastlake, University of Washington, UW Botanic Gardens, and the Seattle Board of Park Commissioners, oppose the Pacific Street Interchange proposal because of its size and expense and the impacts on the Arboretum and its wetlands, Union Bay, the UW, and surrounding neighbor-hoods. Only Montlake and North Capital Hill support the Pacific Street Interchange.

We urge you to participate actively in the comment process and cannot overstate the impact this project will have on our quality of life in Laurelhurst.

LCC trustee Jennifer Biely arranged for the tags to match those throughout the UW Botanic Gardens and installed them over the summer.

The Family Tree Program was funded through a 1989 Neighborhood Matching Fund grant of $20,205 and the generous contributions and volunteer work of neigh-bors and friends. Vice president Liz Ogden and president Jeannie Hale submitted a letter to the City Council regarding the Mayor’s Proposal to Legalize Detached Accessory Dwelling Units (DADUs). Two years ago, LCC wrote to oppose the Mayor’s proposal to legalize detached DADUs citywide. With little support from the City Council at that time, the proposal was taken off the table. Now, the Mayor’s strategy is to legalize DADUs in southeast Seattle with the ultimate goal of legalizing these units citywide. LCC opposed Council Bill 11566 and asked the council to reject this measure; however, the Council passed the proposal to allow DADUs in SE Seattle.

LCC believes the Mayor’s DADU plans fall short in providing adequate protections to single-family neighborhoods, that open space and trees will be lost, and parking problems and congestion will increase — with no assurance that DADUs will create affordable housing. n

LCC Comments on ethics Code and DaDusAt the August Seattle City Council meeting, LCC trustee Nan Haigwood made a presentation urging the council to oppose the Mayor’s proposal to weaken the ethics code as it applies to boards, commissions and advisory committees. It is LCC’s position that “Because the City Council puts great weight upon the recommendations of advisory committees, the work of those committees must be free from any appearance of conflicts of interest. uW Botanic Gardens “rock” David Mabberley, director of the UW Botanic Gardens, is pleased by the positive response from Center for Urban Horticulture neighbors to the big rock recently installed near an entrance there. The granite sign weighs approximately 3.5 tons. Design consultant Dean Driscoll created the lettering and graph-ic. Marenako etched and installed the rock.

Playground Design underway: Get Involved!Mark your calendars! The next public meetings for the playground are Oct. 3 and Nov. 6. Both meetings will run from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. and will be held in the Laurelhurst School cafeteria.

On October 3 Barker Landscape Architects will present three design options for the playground; there will be opportunity to give input on the designs. The November meeting will focus on refining a final design.

Project contacts Coco Sherman and Melissa Kane hope to get as much input from the community as possible. Community enthusiasm and collaboration will make the new playgrounds at Laurelhurst School a better, more enriching place for children and families to play. Contact Coco Sherman ([email protected] or 525-9850) or Melissa Kane ([email protected] or 527-8547) for more information. n

Beautifully renovated roosevelt hs reopensDedicated on August 30, the project included an historic renovation of the 1922 and 1928 buildings and additions to the north side of the main building to house a new gym, cafeteria and performing arts center. The $93.8 million project, under construction for the past two years, was made possible by voter approval of the $398 million Building Excellence II capital levy in February 2001. An open house for the public is planned. n

hats Off to Council-member Jean GoddenThe LCC Board of Trustees com-mends councilmember Godden for her excellent work on Seattle’s Bed and Breakfast ordinance. LCC appreciates her thoughtful research on the potential impacts of B&Bs and the amendments she proposed to address concerns such as park-ing overflow, ownership, and exterior structural alterations.

Thanks to councilmember Godden for recognizing the importance of protecting and preserving the character of Seattle’s single-family neighborhoods.
